Kristen Moves into a "House of Lies"

Kristen Bell(ex-"Elle") just got cast as a "razor-sharp Ivy League graduate" in Showtime's "House of Lies," which makes us wonder: Does she just keep getting more ruthless with each role? Yes, she was very sweet as Veronica Mars, but we like her way better when she's making Jason Segel cry while naked or screaming at Adam Scott through a Bluetooth headset.

So it sounds as if her part in this new dark comedy from Matthew Carnahan ("Dirt") fits her well. Described as "a subversive, scathing look at a self-loathing management consultant from a top-tier firm," "House of Lies" stars Don Cheadle as Marty, a "highly successful, cutthroat consultant who is never above using any means (or anyone) necessary to get his clients the information they want," and finds Bell in the role of Jeannie Van Der Hooven, an ambitious woman who works at Marty's firm.
Based on Martin Kihn's tell-all book "House of Lies: How Management Consultants Steal Your Watch and Then Tell You the Time," the series has also tapped Ben Schwartz ("Parks and Recreation") and Josh Lawson ("Romantically Challenged") as employees at Marty's firm, and Glynn Turman ("In Treatment") as Marty's father. We look forward to seeing Bell crush them all beneath her sensible career-lady shoes.

Actress ALI LARTER almost didn't make it to the hospital in time for the birth of her first child last month (Dec10) after mudslides closed off her neighbourhood in Los Angeles.

The Heroes star recently gave birth to little Theodore Hayes MacArthur, her first child with her husband, writer/actor Hayes MacArthur.

She has now shown off her son in the new issue of Us Weekly magazine - but admits mudslides caused by heavy rain in California nearly stopped her reaching the hospital when she went into labour.

Larter says, "During the L.A. mudslides, our street was closed. Four hours after the fireman opened it, I was in labour!"

NBC Developing Comic-Based Drama Starring 'Heroes' Alum Milo Ventimiglia

EXCLUSIVE: He just starred on an NBC drama series with comic book mythology. Now Heroes star Milo Ventimiglia is back at the network as the star/executive producer of Rest, a new drama project based on a comic book series he co-created.

Ventimiglia will executive produce the project, which has received a script commitment with film/TV/Broadway producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron (Footloose, Drop Dead Diva). Also executive producing are Ventimiglia's producing partner at Divide Pictures Russ Cundiff and Marc Silvestri and Matt Hawkins from Top Cow, the comic book publisher behind Rest. Writer Philip Levens (Smallville), who will also executive produce, is adapting the comic, which was created by Ventimiglia, Cudiff and Mark Powers based on a script by Mike O'Sullivan. It centers on John Barret (Ventimiglia), a normal twentysomething guy in New York City who spends every waking hour working. He enrolls in a testing program for a drug that eliminates the need of sleep and soon becomes addicted to it, which helps him accomplish more but also leads to serious consequences. Since the comic launched in 2008, there has been a lot of chatter among fans that Barret looks a lot like Ventimiglia and that Rest would be turned into TV series or film. Ventimiglia and Levens are with CAA.

The Event S1E7: I Know Who You Are (recap)

If there's one thing I always say -- and I do always say this, and you should ask anyone who knows me -- about TV shows, it's this: "If you can't end an episode of your TV show with a little girl entering a mysterious apartment full of what appear to be other little girls but are actually some kinda weird old people in little girl drag, then your TV show is a complete failure." The list of shows which this old maxim could be applied to is incredibly long, including such illustrious series as "The Wire," "Mad Men" and "The Dick Van Dyke Show," and tonight, "The Event" joins their ranks, as Leila's little sister, whose name I haven't bothered to learn just yet, is ushered into an apartment that looks more like a library in an ancient country house, then confronted with the fact that all of the little girls there look like old women. (And some look like old men!) Cue the end of the episode.

I have no idea what any of this means, other than the fact that "The Event" just wants to keep tossing weird stuff at us in the hopes that we'll keep watching.

Tonight's episode was a decided step back from the last one, which at least suggested the series was figuring out its voice and its structure, so maybe this last scene was just a way to keep the weirdness quotient high. It happens. But in terms of making sense of anything or dragging the story forward or even making Leila's little sister a character who's something beyond "generic little girl," the scene didn't work. It was just oddness for oddness' sake, and the producers would surely be pleased if you tuned in for next week's episode, which is already going to the well of "let's watch the highly-rated pilot from a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT ANGLE." Usually, shows don't go to this well until Season 3 or 4. There'd better be a darned good reason for "The Event" to be doing so so soon. (And, as we all know by now, there won't be.)

Anyway, this is the part where I'd theoretically summarize what happened tonight and talk about what sort of bearing it had on other events. Except, the thing is, pretty much nothing DID happen. The show wisely kept to the character-specific flashbacks of the last episode, this time letting us get to know Zeljko Ivanek's Blake Sterling just a little bit better, but the connection between the past and future storylines was far more tenuous this week than it was the last time around. In that last episode, Simon was the focus of both the present and past storylines, and the two of them commented on each other in interesting ways. In this episode, Blake is pretty much just hanging out around the edges of the present storyline, and all of the big decisions are made for him in the past (outside of one crucial one). It leaves the episode feeling oddly shapeless, especially since the main plot -- the aliens making sure that Simon isn't fingered as one of them -- has so little to do with Blake.

The flashback story for Blake isn't a bad one. Fourteen years ago, he was serving in the CIA under his father and happily married to a woman named Laura. Except, whoops, as it turned out, Laura was a Russian spy, embedded in a marriage to Blake to help leak U.S. state secrets to her compatriots back in just barely post-Communist Russia. Confronted with the truth of his wife's betrayal, Blake tells her that he knows everything about what she's done, but he believes she actually loves him. (Ah, we men! Always so stupid in these matters!) Of course she doesn't, and of course she bolts, and of course his father is lurking in the bushes to shoot Laura in the head. Blake's out a wife, but his dad offers to let him take credit for shooting the woman, the better to help him advance his career. Gee. That's great, dad.

Anyway, in the "present," Blake apologizes to the president for not realizing the mole (the recently framed Murphy) was in his department. He's usually better at catching these things -- since he's cultivated a "mole sense" after the thing with his wife -- but he let the country down this time.

This is all well and good, but it has so little to do with the major plots of the episode proper, which mostly have to do with Thomas coming up with a way to get Simon off the hook when he's so obviously guilty and Sean and Leila seeking out a mysterious dude who can help them find her sister, that it feels
inconsequential. It's nice to know more about the past of Blake, but it's simultaneously far from necessary. The title of the episode, "I Know Who You Are," is what Blake says to his wife when he finds out her terrible secret, but I think it's also meant to be applied to more and more of the characters, who reveal little things about themselves in this episode. (For example, as it turns out, Sophia is Thomas' mother, though I have this weird feeling we learned this before.) So, yes, it's good to know more about who Blake really is, but the best episodes of shows like this unite the past and present action through some sort of character and thematic continuity. This episode might have been better off as a flashback about Thomas, but it's obvious the series doesn't want to play that card this soon into its run.

So what we're left with is a centerless episode that doesn't do a lot to justify its existence. So little actually happens -- when the episode ends, we're basically where we were at the start of the last episode -- that it's tempting to write this off as yet another episode for marking time. Yet Ivanek is such a skillful actor and there are just enough neat little touches around the edges that I would rank this above the first few episodes of the show, where it felt like everything was just going to keep running in circles. And then there's that ending, which is just strange enough to make me want to see how it's resolved. (My prediction? The little girls are the ones from that encoded document Sean found, and the conspiracy dudes -- led by Hal Holbrook, who's mostly wasted but always a welcome presence -- have been trying various things to make them ageless, like the aliens, and have mostly failed.) This is a bland, shapeless episode of television, but it isn't as bad as it could have been.

The story in brief, in case you've checked out: It sure looks like Simon's the mole, which means that he's going to face some pretty horrific "enhanced interrogation" as Blake and his pals try to get information about the aliens' plan out of him. Thomas, however, has other ideas, and he spends much of the hour figuring out a way to get Simon off the hook, finally framing Murphy, the guy who caught on to what Simon was up to in the last episode, for the leaks. Oh, and Sophia is his mom. Blake, for his part, was betrayed by his wife 14 years ago -- she was a Russian spy! -- and then his dad killed her. Yikes. Sean and Leila spend most of the episode running around (when don't they?), but they at least find out that somebody somewhere was interested in girls around Leila's sister's age, right before the hacker they've turned to to help get this information blows up his apartment to stop the Feds, who are closing in. Oh, and Leila's sister? She's led to an apartment full of creepy old person kids. Yeah, we have no idea either.

The Event S1E5: Casualties of war (Recap) (from LA TIMES)

"Casualties of War" has a couple of things that put it ahead of every other episode of "The Event" so far: a sense of purpose headed forward and a central question that puts its characters through something like the wringer. It's the best episode of the show so far because it slows down to tell something like an actual story, not just a long collection of events. And it centers that story on the two characters who actually make sense as characters at this point, Sean Walker and President Martinez. To be sure, most of the reason these characters are compelling has to do with the men playing them, not with anything the writers have done with them. But that doesn't mean that this episode isn't a fine showcase for the work of Jason Ritter and Blair Underwood, all the same.

The episode split down the middle like this: Sean tried to finally get Leila back, with the help of his FBI agent pal and, briefly, Vicky, while Martinez attempted to save the people from the plane, who were suffering from some sort of biological weapon and/or ailment. In the process of doing this, both men were forced to make some pretty terrible threats, and we were left to wonder if they would follow through. Meanwhile, the bad guys showed themselves capable of even worse stuff, and we got some nice glimpses into the past of the aliens, specifically their role in helping spur the Manhattan Project. There was some nice storytelling scattered throughout, and although the show continues to over-rely on hacky devices like the nesting-doll structure of the flashbacks, at least the episode more or less broke down into a concrete set of goals for the characters, and at least it didn't force a massive cliffhanger.

Let's start with Martinez. At this point, an idealistic president who confronts the limits of his ideals when he has to make a terrible choice to save the lives of hundreds of Americans is a TV cliche. The presidents on "24" and "The West Wing" both had to deal with these sorts of issues (fittingly, one of the show runners on "The Event" is a "24" alumnus), and numerous other tales of presidents facing down impossible threats have pivoted on similar plot points. So the idea that Martinez would have to confront his own desires to be a good man in the face of having to save the people on the plane was a bit of a nonstarter for me. Furthermore, within the universe of the show, Martinez has already compromised on his ideals. He was bent on releasing the alien detainees from their camp in Alaska, but he put a hold on that when he learned that there were more of them than he thought there were. Because he's already in a moral gray area he doesn't want to be in, I'm not sure his moral struggle had as much resonance as the show wanted it to, particularly when it came to handing over Sophia.

That said, Underwood really played the heck out of this moral calculus, this attempt to decide whether it was better to let everybody on the plane die and not have to compromise with the show's version of terrorists, or whether it was better for him to play hardball with the aliens by threatening to kill all of the detainees. Martinez knows the one option he doesn't have is to release the detainees, because that means that another species with far greater technology than his own will be calling the shots, and that puts him in a terrible position. Without the detainees, he doesn't have a bargaining chip, even as he wants to do the right thing. The weight of the decision to threaten the detainees was handled well both by the show and by Underwood, who played this with a kind of tense remove. The final moments, in which he and Thomas come to a kind of agreement -- he'll just turn over Sophia for the lives of all of the plane passengers -- were among the best the series has done, and I liked that the show let us know just how much these decisions weighed on Thomas as well.

Meanwhile, in Texas, Sean used the one bit of leverage he had to get Vicky to betray her own people. He knows about her son, who's not actually her son but, rather, a baby she rescued from a scene where she was supposed to kill everyone in the building. By threatening to expose her boy, Sean got Vicky to gun down her own men (a plot point that doesn't make a lot of sense, but whatever), then managed to get to Leila and finally rescue her. I'm glad the show hasn't stretched this out any further than needed, and that it seems like we're going to start getting some answers soon as to just why the conspiracy's so interested in Sean. A lot of this plot was pretty implausible -- mostly stemming from Sean's hacker friend's oh-so-convenient powers -- but at least it put Sean in the same place as Martinez, forcing him to make a terrible threat (of exposing Vicky's son) and then having us wonder if he'd follow through.

By far the most interesting development, though, has to do with the fact that the aliens destroyed their ship when they crashed in the 1940s and thus spent much of the 20th century trying to influence human technology in such a way as to reattain the kinds of parts they needed to rebuild their ship. This meant that the aliens got deeply involved in the Manhattan Project (of course they did), but we also got to see how Sophia originally sent Thomas out into the population at large, clearly not really knowing just what he would get up to once he was out there. It was a neat little flashback, and it mostly told one cohesive story of its own, something the other flashbacks haven't done.

I wouldn't say that "The Event" has risen to a level where I'm going to recommend it. This was still a bad episode of television in a lot of ways. But at least it was largely competent and told a story that mostly made sense. Sure, plenty of stuff was pointless and/or stupid, but there were some nice moments for much of the cast, and it gave a template for the show going forward. Plus, the cliffhanger -- which just involved Martinez putting Sophia on a train for Thomas to pick up -- was nicely small-scale, compared with the constant stream of cliffhangers involving the plane passengers. Every serialized show needs a sense that its story line breaks more easily into smaller components. This episode finally suggested that was true of "The Event," and I hope the show follows its lead going forward, especially now that the series has a full season order.

The story, in case you didn't bother to tune in: The president, after much hemming and hawing, finally cut a deal with Thomas to obtain an antidote for the passengers of the plane in exchange for turning over Sophia to the alien separatist leader (or whatever you want to call him). Meanwhile, Sean used his knowledge that Vicky's son was the sole survivor of a massacre that Vicky carried out to gain his girlfriend's safety, though the two were far from safe. Finally, it became clear that the aliens have been messing in human scientific development, the better to fix their ship and return to their home, wherever that may be.

The Event S1E4: A Matter of Life and Death (Full Ep and Recap)

Does “The Event” exhaust anybody else? Every week, the individual scenes are crafted specifically to avoid giving the audience any helpful information. After the second episode – where we learned about the aliens and what happened to the plane – we’ve been getting an increasingly elaborate shell game, one seemingly designed just to keep the audience riding high on a buzz of constant plot momentum. But when the plot keeps circling the same five or six things, it just gets tiring to have to cheer loudly as the juggler at the center of the show keeps all of the balls (and chainsaws and what have you) in the air. Put another way, I’m pretty sure I could skip all but the first five and last five minutes of “The Event” and not really miss anything (well, I could, if it wasn’t my job to keep up with it). Everything in between is a long, long journey to nowhere.

“But, Todd!” you say. “Lots of other shows have had this ‘put the action up front and at the end’ structure, and you’ve liked many of them!” Indeed, I have. “24” was the epitome of the super-fun TV thrill ride (at least when it was good). “Lost” was one of my favorite shows ever, combining a bunch of genre tropes I really liked with some awesome plotting and mysteries. I even liked the goofy fun of the first seasons of “Prison Break” and “Heroes,” which were supremely dumb shows but at least sort of proud of that fact, as they just kept coming up with endless strings of insane plot twists. Honestly, if “The Event” were more like those latter two shows, I’d just be rolling with it. I’d know, deep down, that it wasn’t GOOD, but I’d at least be having fun. But look at those four shows I just listed. See how many characters you can name from those shows, just off the top of your head. Now see how many you can list from "The Event." Without checking IMDB, I get to Sean (because he's the main character) and President Blair Underwood before running out of room. Even the DUMBEST of those other shows - "Prison Break," if you're playing along at home - had a wealth of fun characters in it. But “The Event” wants to have its guilty pleasure cake and eat it too. It wants to be dumb and profound and thrilling all at once, and it’s failing at all three tasks.

Take tonight’s final plot twist, which might just be the dumbest plot twist in the history of plot twists. You know that whole thing where the evil Vicky (or whatever you want to call her) and her good pal Carter (played by the always enjoyable D.B. Sweeney) are apparently foiled by the feisty Leila, who breaks out after the latter leaves a giant chunk of glass in her basement prison, the better for Leila to cut loose her bonds and make her escape, shooting Vicky in the process, leading the evil one to tumble down the stairs. Of course, Leila goes to the cops, and of course, we’re suspecting that the cops have been turned (or the conspiracy is monitoring the phone lines). But what happens at the end is even stupider: The conspiracy has set up an elaborate ruse to get Leila to call Sean, so he’ll come and try to rescue her and they can … do something to him.

Let’s leave aside for the moment that the easiest possible way to get Leila to call Sean is to leave a cellphone within her reach. Let’s also leave aside for the moment that a global conspiracy could probably get a guy’s cellphone number if they really wanted to – regardless of whether that guy is on their radar or not. What makes this whole sequence so frustrating is that it exists purely to keep the audience guessing. Nothing can change, and everything has to be reversed because otherwise, there can’t be a series. Leila can’t escape. Sean can’t find her. The conspiracy must always exist because shows like this always have a conspiracy. It’s like there’s been no thought given to explaining to the audience why any of this is worth caring about or why any of these characters are worth our affection. Instead, every effort has been made to just keep plates spinning as long as possible, while the show tap dances.

Every week, I go into this show thinking that this will be the episode where I can turn off my brain and just go with the stupidity. Every week, I’m wrong. It’s simply a long chase sequence that sacrifices everything in the name of superficial forward momentum. Honestly, if you were to summarize everything that’s happened this season so far, you would probably cover less space than if you were to summarize the events of non-serialized shows like “Hawaii Five-0” or “The Defenders.” At least in those shows, the characters take on new cases from week to week. On “The Event,” everything is devoted to keeping up the illusion that things are happening, even as the show is constantly struggling to get back to the status quo. To take another exceptionally stupid example from tonight’s episode, just why would a threat be made to kill all of the people from the plane when they’ve been killed and resurrected once already (and had their memories wiped)? Why not have the alien leader guy use the death of the people on the plane as a legitimate threat? Or promise to use his technology to make all humans immortal? Or something other than just going a step forward, then immediately taking that same step back?

I write enough about what makes me angry about this show from week to week that I suppose it would be best to talk about some of the things I am still enjoying. Jason Ritter remains a likable presence at the show’s center, and his scene with Vicky’s son (yes, she has a son) was well-done. I like the occasional bit of story development when the show lets the audience figure something out for itself – like when we caught a glimpse of Sean’s phone being low on battery and were able to piece together that Leila wouldn’t get through to him because … his battery died. And I really enjoy the scenes between Blair Underwood and Laura Innes, even if they keep repeating the same basic lines of dialogue over and over. The actors are such pros that pretty much everything they’re handed ends up being more fun than it has any right to be.

But I headed into “A Matter of Life and Death” wanting to write about how I can sort of enjoy the show on that stupid level I did “Heroes” and “Prison Break,” before I realized that that’s simply no longer true. Maybe it was true in the pilot, and maybe it was true in the second episode, but by now, the series has put enough of its cards on the table that we should be getting into some truly insane stuff. Instead, it mostly just keeps having the same chase sequence over and over and over, with a little computer hacking thrown in for good measure. Sure, “Heroes” and “Prison Break” were stupid, but they weren’t afraid to blow stuff up. “The Event” keeps lighting fuses and then snuffing them out just as quickly.

The plot in a nutshell, in case you’ve been sensible enough to give up on this show: All of those people who woke up last week? They’re alive, but they don’t remember what happened on the plane. Until the possibly evil alien guy is all, “Look what I can do!” and gives them nose bleeds, which apparently will lead to their deaths. (You ever notice how often a nose bleed is a harbinger of doom on TV? Sometimes, a nose bleed is just a nose bleed.) President Blair Underwood receives a threat to this effect from a phone that was secretly placed in his kid’s backpack. The other aliens want Sophia and company, and they’ll do anything to get her. Torture keeps getting brought up obliquely because the show wants to seem like it has its finger on the pulse of modern America. (And when the president first met Sophia, she just wanted to be like any other immigrant – also topical!) Sean and his new FBI friend race all over, without really accomplishing anything (though they find Vicky’s mom and son), but Leila breaks out of her bonds on her own. It turns out it was a set up by the conspiracy to lure in Sean. And Hal Holbrook’s disembodied voice controls the conspiracy!

The Event S1E3 "Protect Them From The Truth"

On the third episode of The Event, Sean gained an ally in FBI agent Claire Collier (Heather McComb). Sterling wants to use unscrupulous means to get Sophia to talk, but the president and vice president have a different plan. We learn confusing new information about the victims of the "crash" of Avias Flight 514.

SEAN WALKER

Just seconds after the FBI agents were told to take an alternate route because of a "chemical spill" last week, an errant RV plows into their car. Sean escapes easily, but the agents are both trapped inside. He extracts Claire, but Claire's partner doesn't make it.

Sean takes Claire to a motel room, where he attempts to use her laptop to gain access to the bureau's facial-recognition software so he can identify the nefarious Vicky Roberts. Claire explains that he can only access it from inside the building. When Claire's colleagues arrive to rescue her, Sean appears to have escaped, but actually he has snuck into the agents' trunk. He's captured at the FBI building trying to identify Vicky, and Claire arranges for a transfer of the prisoner.

At the FBI office, a newscaster says that air traffic control lost contact with Avias Flight 514, aka Sean's flight, about an hour ago. Claire realizes that it has been four hours since Sean told her about it, so clearly this is some sort of cover-up. So she's starting to believe him.

As if on cue, the office erupts in gunfire, as what was expected to be a standard transfer is something else entirely. Nearly everyone is shot and killed, but Sean escapes with Claire.

PRESIDENT MARTINEZ

Speaking of a cover-up, the vice president is concerned that Sterling, left unchecked, will resort to unscrupulous means to get Sophia to talk. He's concerned because that's exactly what Sterling says he's going to do. The president says that the Martinez administration does not practice torture, and that he has a better plan. He makes an announcement to the detainees at Inastranka, promising to release whoever helps them solve the mystery of the plane crash.

Sophia says it won't work, but one prisoner, the erratic William, steps forward. He wants money and protection for him and his girlfriend Maya, who is also a detainee at Inastranka.

Simon visits Sophia and figures out that William hasn't revealed anything about what Thomas did to the passengers. "I know he hasn't talked, since we're all still alive," Sophia says. "And now you'll have to deal with him ... harshly," she tells Simon.

And he does. Maya is released from Inastranka, and just as the happy couple starts to plan their future together, Maya's face changes and she stabs William.

LEILA

It's still unclear who Vicky works for, perhaps some sort of governmental black-ops division. That said, whatever Vicky & Co. are doing, it is not in consultation with the executive branch — unless ... they're working on the sly for Sterling.

Vicky drives to a storage facility at the port, where she locks Leila into a marine storage container. She intends to return later to kill her once she hears that Sean has been eliminated, but since he escapes, they have to keep Leila alive a little bit longer.

MICHAEL

And she's not the only one. In the final scene of the episode, we see a soldier patrolling the temporary morgue for victims of the "crash" of Avias 514. As the camera pans over the corpses, we see that Michael is among the dead. But then we hear moaning — someone is still alive! And then one by one, each of the victims wakes up. Nobody is dead.

Welcome to the Powell family, better known as ABC’s “No Ordinary Family.” Jim (Michael Chiklis, “The Shield”) is a police sketch artist, whose wife, Stephanie (Julie Benz, “Dexter”), is a successful research scientist. They have two kids; Daphne (Kay Panabaker, “Summerland”), a 16-year-old with a cheating boyfriend, and JJ (Jimmy Bennett, “Star Trek”), the 14-year-old self-proclaimed “idiot” of the family. The Powells were just a normal family until they took a sunset plane tour of the Amazon and crashed into some super special magical body of water, although they didn’t realize it at the time.

The foursome returns to their suburban life. Jim’s unhappy that his family seems to be further disconnected despite the fact that they survived a plane crash together (not so for their pilot). Stephanie continues to skyrocket up the corporate ladder, receiving funding to research a flowering plant she found in the Amazon. (Their “vacation” originated as a business trip for her.) And the kids return to high school.

All seems unchanged until…

Jim’s at work in the precinct talking to his cop buddy Yvonne by the vending machines when an arrested thug brought in for questioning grabs a gun from a cop’s holster and fires it. Jim dives for Yvonne and catches the bullet as they fall to the floor. The both rise and Yvonne immediately starts looking for the bullet as Jim heads outside to get some air, furtively clutching the crushed bullet.

He meets his best friend, George (Romany Malco, “Weeds”) who also happens to be the district attorney, on a rooftop where he tests his super strength by jumping off and trying to fly, limbs outstretched. He falls to the ground instead, shattering concrete in an alley. Pushing off, he bounds back to the roof to George’s delight.

Return to Stephanie, who promised her husband a date night, which, of course, she cancels to have drinks with her new research funder. But there’s traffic on the freeway, so Stephanie starts running and soon she’s whooshing by cars. She halts and finds herself in the middle lane with cars zooming past.

“I need you to shoot me,” Jim says to George at the local batting cages. Jim’s rented them out for $200, ensuring he’s the only one there as he attempts to see if he can catch a 140 mph fastball. George can’t fire the gun and then misfires, and Jim leaps for the bullet as George faints.

Just as Jim confides in George before speaking to his wife, Stephanie looks to reveal her power to her research assistant, Katie (Autumn Reeser, “The O.C.”). On a horse track, Katie holds a radar gun while Stephanie runs circles in the dirt. “You’re doing a mile every six seconds,” Katie says. “Oh, I thought I was faster than that,” Stephanie replies, barely short of breath.

Another day passes. Stephanie finds herself finally able to help JJ with his homework, which he clearly doesn’t understand, nor does he seemingly want to. And then there’s Daphne who can’t comprehend why girls are flirting with her boyfriend.

Back to Jim, who’s stolen a police walkie-talkie and has the urge to use his powers to fight crime. He’s hot on the trail of a police chase when he lands on a suspect’s car, dislodges the door and tosses it, and the driver, into a pile of trash. He’s soon to be the hero until he’s shot at point blank range in the back of the neck. He starts to bleed and calls George for help. He’s then in bed, with George and his wife, who now knows why, at his side.

They call a family meeting to tell the kids, but the kids haven’t shown any signs of powers until…

Daphne’s on the basketball court warming up for a game with her team, when she begins to hear their thoughts and then, appropriately, freaks out. Still no power for JJ, though, who’s bummed. Stephanie’s now showing signs of actually being home, and comforts them both.

Back to Daphne, hanging out with her boyfriend, who’s clearly cheating on her with Emily, Daphne’s best friend. Daphne realizes this when she’s on the couch with Lucas, and begins to hear his thoughts. She then, promptly, storms out crying.

In the meantime, baby brother JJ (good news!), is in a math test and suddenly sees answers to formulas. He scrambles to write them all down before they disappear. Looks like he found his power.

Jim’s healed now, and he’s back on the job chasing Yvonne’s criminals when he encounters the man who shot him. After stuffing Yvonne in the trunk of his car, this man proceeds to fight with Jim in a parking garage, disappearing into a slippery cloud and reappearing in another place. “You thought you were the only one,” the man proclaims to Jim. But before Jim has a chance to absorb the statement, Yvonne frees herself from the trunk and shoots-to-kill the man, in disbelief that Jim’s there.

In the penultimate scene, the dead man is flat on a table deep in the bowels of a building with Dr. Dayton King, Stephanie’s mentor. The doctor is hatching a plan to cover up the body, never letting anyone know who or what this creature is.

The pilot ends with Stephanie and Jim in a therapist’s office, talking about their familial problems, the least of which is their newfound powers. The doctor suggests twice a week appointments, and the couple agree.

The Event S1E2: To Keep Us Safe

The Event is the newest show to leave you guessing and wanting more at the end of an episode. Last week's episode ended with questions, and this week's is supposed to have answers.

Where's the Plane?

When the plane disappeared in mid-air, it traveled to the desert, where it makes a rough landing. They realize part of the plane is on fire and everyone evacuates. Michael tells Sean that four days earlier, he was kidnapped and forced to fly the plane because they showed him Leila and threatened to kill his daughters like they did his wife. Vicky has Leila. Helicopters are headed their way but Michael says they're not there to help and tells Sean to go save Leila. At the end of the episode, Lee arrives on scene with other government officials, but no one else is there except for Michael. But then they find all the passengers dead, and not from the plane crash.

Who Are the Detainees?

Meanwhile, Secret Service hurries to get the President and his family away from the scene. President Martinez wants to know what happened to the plane more than he wants to know why it was headed his way. The government is already working on covering it up from the public. A burst of radiation was picked up where the plane disappeared, and they're trying to figure out how it could've been done. Blake Sterling may have the answer. In the 1940s, a plane crashed with 97 survivors (the detainees), who were determined to be "not of terrestrial origin." Though they look human, they age slowly and their DNA is different. They're being held because they're not saying why they're there.

What Happened to Leila?

Sean is now walking through the desert, but he collapses because of the heat. Flasback to the cruise: Leila's not feeling well. Vicky shows up and the two girls convince him to go snorkeling. Greg shows up with a hangover cure for Leila. He hits on her, but she tells him to leave. Security is waiting at the door, but the guard stabs Greg and Leila is taken. Sean wakes up in a hospital in Arizona, and he wants to talk to the police. When the nurse calls the police, the officer looks Sean up in the database and it turns out he's wanted for Greg's murder. The nurse tells Sean the police are on the way for his statement, but he can tell she's hiding something. When he sees the police show up, he runs. The nurse tells him of the murder suspicion and points the police in his direction. Flashback to five years earlier and Sean's swimming in Boston. He meets Leila and teaches her how to float. Sean is caught by the FBI by the exit. Sean tries to explain everything to the FBI agents, but they don't believe him. He says they're coming up to near where the plane landed but the road is blocked off for a chemical spill.

Interviewing Sophia

Flashback to when Sophia's plane landed: Sophia says she'll stay with the wounded while the others leave because not everyone can be caught. President Martinez enters Sophia's cell to question her. He's going to take responsibility and wants Sophia to do so as well. She says that they "mean...no harm" and saved his life, but can't say anything else. Sterling assigns Lee to head the operation into finding the others of Sophia's people. Flashback to Lee getting blood taken. He's applied to "Clandestine Services" in the CIA. He goes into the bathroom and pulls a tube out of his arm--is he one of these "aliens?" It's certainly looking like that could be the case. He meets with Thomas and says they had to take the plane, but wants to know where they are. Thomas says they're using the passengers.

“Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps” hauled in about $7 million on Friday to top the box office and put itself in position to hold number one over theweekend. Look for the Michael Douglas sequel to earn roughly $21 million over the weekend. According to Box Office Mojo, “Wall Street 2″ will be Douglas’ highest opening weekend.

“Legends of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole” is off to a disappointing start after earning just $4.5 million on Friday. The family film should do better business on Saturday, which should help raise it’s weekend box office to $16.5 million. Warner Brothers may have been looking for a new franchise, but with a $100 million budget and this opening is unlikely to win over sequel talks.

“You Again” is headed for a modest $8 million opening in fifth place for the weekend. After “When In Rome” struggled at the box office, Kristin Bell’s cred as a starring actress is dwindling quickly.

“The Town” and “Easy A” are holding up well, only dropping about 30% from it’s opening Friday. “The Town” will battle “Guardians” for second place this weekend, aiming at $16 million, while “Easy A” is headed to a $12 million second weekend. Not bad for budding actress Emma Stone, nor for a film with an $8 million budget.

What is "The Event" on NBC? That has been the question that has been on everyone's mind since the previews for this new series hit earlier this summer. Tonight, the series premiere for "The Event" finally hit the network, and things start with explosively with a couple heading off on a trip, but there is a time jump where the man that was going on a trip is now hijacking a plane. A man from some secret organization tries to stop the plane from taking off in Miami, but he is unsuccessful. The airport's radar even goes dark!

The Event Time Jumps Through Time

This is where we go for another time jump with him on a cruise and proposing to his fiancee just ass a woman starts to drown. He jumps in to saves her. The time jumps in this series in the first twenty minutes are enough to give anyone a headache! This earlier time is on a cruise, and everything looks to be perfect for the young couple in love. What changes between that day and the time on the plane in Miami? From their we go back to the plane where a marshal is trying to arrest the man trying to hijack the plane. He is very intent on getting into the cockpit. It looks to be too late though! Halfway through the episode and there is still no clue to what the big event is.

Whatever the big event is, it is known by those in Washington, but the President of the United States had no clue about it. There are ninety-seven prisoners being kept, and the CIA is in control of the project. Here in this world, the president is played by Blair Underwood, and he takes charge. He wants to meet these people being held. Once he meets them, he decides to go public and takes the leader of those captive for a press conference. Will this finally tell all what the event is? Not yet! There is an attack coming for the president, and it is the plane that was taken from Miami. It is crashing towards the location of the president. Someone doesn't want this information revealed!

Family Connections And Disappearances

Another time jump takes us back to eight days before the plane hijacking where the focus is on the family of the female half of the couple. There is trouble though as her father is too tense. He won't talk to his daughter, and his wife picks up on it just as people with guns come in and break into the house. This episode has so many twists. It is hard to keep up. We learn that the pilot of the plane is the father of the daughter Sean Walker is set to marry. Another twist! Has there been enough of those in this premiere? Could this series have too many twists to keep up with? The pilot locks everyone out of the cockpit, and then there is a time jump back to the cruise and the happy couple. Sean has joined their new friends on a watching trip. When he returns to the hotel, he is locked out of his hotel room. Turns out, he is no longer signed into that room. His girlfriend is supposedly still there, but when security takes him to the room, she is gone. There is no record of him or the girlfriend even being on board.

He calls her family, but there is a lot of blood and no answer. What is going on? Still no idea what the event is! The air force wants to take down the plane, and it is still on course to crash. Sean tries to reason with Michael, but he doesn't seem to get through to him. Whatever the event is, it is huge! The plane blows up or is somehow disintegrated. There is no debris from the destruction. What in the world just happened? Who saved them? Who is them? Another alien series? Is this possible? No idea yet, but hopefully all find that out soon. An okay start with a lot of twists. Will you keep watching to find out what "The Event" is?

Yes, friends. HEROES IS BACK...

Ok..not in any new episodes, but the cable network G4 is excerising its off network rights and will now begin airing episodes of the series back to back EVERY MONDAY NIGHT.

Remember, it was the impressive following of an audience for Star Trek AFTER syndication that got that series to the big screen.

'Heroes' creator 'hopeful' for revival

Heroes creator Tim Kring has revealed that he is still in talks with NBC about the possibility of reviving the show as a mini-series.

The show was originally cancelled in May. Kring confirmed last month that he was meeting with NBC to discuss bringing the program back.

He has now told TV Guide that talks are still ongoing and that he is "hopeful" that the series will return soon.

"There's certainly talk about [a mini-series] right now and I am very hopeful," he said. "I strongly believe that the Heroes universe is a very big and very potent brand. It is for the fans that we feel that [the show] should continue."

He added: "NBC has expressed an interest in finding a way to wrap it up in a way that honours the fans and the show, and I'm very interested in pursuing that."

Kring hinted that if the planned television revival did not come to fruition, the show could return in another medium.

"It can continue in any number of platforms, not simply broadcast," he said.

The final episode of Heroes aired on February 8.

The NBC series was cancelled last spring after four seasons and a decline in ratings. Heroes creator Tim Kring has said that he wants to make a movie and would like to keep his fictional universe alive.

Grunberg said, “I think there has to be [a movie]… But I also predicted they wouldn’t just out and out cancel it, so what do I know?”

He continued, “It makes business sense to do something — there’s a huge fanbase that wants some sort of conclusion and I think the actors want to do it. It’s not about making a fortune to come back — we all appreciate the fans so much, I think if the call went out, we’d all be on board.”

Ok, let's say this. Heroes is gone. It will not come back, at least as a series.

Oh...did I mention the daughter is a CHEERLE...oh, sorry...GYMNAST (close enough).

There is even a scene that.....well....looks VERRRRRRRY FAMILIAR.

So is this HEROES 2.0? A satire? Or enough to keep NBC/Tim Kring's lawyers busy?

NBC still has a couple major titles on the bubble for renewal -- namely "Chuck" and "Heroes" -- but sources indicate both will probably return, with "Heroes" likely receiving a 13-episode "final season" order.

"It is all yet to be debated," Bromstad said. "Both of those shows make sense with the new shows we'll be bringing on."

Sorry we have not posted here in awhile, but I have been busy with life.

Not not busy enough to give NBC a solution to its problem of how to save Heroes.

As a matter of fact, they may already be working on that solution as we speak...they just may not know it yet.

First, an update. The Heroes machine continues apace. The latest online bit is Hiro (through Yamaguchi) delving into the early years of The Company. One would assume that Samuel is twittering in jail considering that @Sullivan_Bros continues to tweet.

A few weeks ago, a drive spearheaded by the person connected with the Twitter account @weloveheroes managed to get the topic #Heroes100 trending on that site. #Heroes100 means a request to NBC to put 100 episodes in the can for syndication (though soon to be NBC-stablemate-via-Comcast G4 have those rights already). It even got a high-five tweet from Greg Grunberg

The best news is that the Hollywood Reporter claims an inside tip-off that NBC was 60% set in renewal.

But 60% is not 100%. Plus, NBC is doing much better now that Mr. Leno is back at 11:35 E/P (and so is Leno, by the way...sorry TeamCoCo).

So the question really is, what scenario would NBC accept to keep out specials on the air.

Then THIS comes up:

24 may live to see another day after all.

Multiple sources confirm to me exclusively that 20th Century Fox has approached NBC about picking up the series should Fox opt to cancel it — and the Peacock is considering it. “There’s definitely some interest,” says an insider close to the talks.

Earlier this week, reports surfaced that 20th (a.k.a. the studio) and Fox (a.k.a. the network) are nearing a mutual decision to end the serial thriller after eight seasons due to declining ratings and rising costs.

A move to NBC — while still considered somewhat of a long shot given the hefty price tag — would likely delay 20th’s plans to launch a Jack Bauer film franchise. From a production standpoint, 24 execs have long maintained that it would next to impossible to make a movie while the series was still on the air.

Reps for 20th and NBC declined to comment.

So what does this mean for Heroes....follow.

First, under My scenario, Heroes would return, but NOT until after the NFL Season. This would give NBC and Tim Kring a chance to craft about 20 episodes that could defiantly end the series and move IT into a film franchise...or keep it open for another season. (plus, With Rasamurthy gone, NoMoHinder!).

Now the Grand plan: Pair Heroes on SUNDAY NIGHTS.......with 24!

Here's how it would work-

Feb 13, 2011....A Two hour 24 premiere that would go from 9-11. E/P, Following a one hour "Celebrity Apprentice" Preview special Then for 4 days after, a 24 marathon of new show Mon-Thur.

Feb 20, 2011...Heroes would premiere with a 2 hour special starting at 8pm-10, with 24 settling in on its new time of 10-11

Feb 27, 2011...The new Sunday Line up would be in place:

7-8: Dateline NBC or a Countdown Weekly with Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow hour

8-9: Celebrity Apprentice

9-10: Heroes

10-11: 24

This would continue until the end of May when everything would be wrapped up.

You can even start things off with a 4 part Cliff-Hanger for Heroes in November.

The promotion possibilities are endless: Imagine, for instance, Noah Bennett and Jack Bauer in the same promo.

Plus, it would give Heroes what it has needed for the last two years. A strong lead-in that can filter the audience down Heroes and 24.

And, lets take into consideration that, assuming things stay the way they are, NBC;s main competition would be the aging lineups at ABC and CBS.

If NBC works it right, it could look like a masterstroke.

Or just a dumb idea from some blogger in California.

By now the 19th and final episode of Heroes' 4th season has aired. Many of you watched live. Some are watching via Hulu.

Also by now you know that all the pleading, begging, cajoling, and such may have been for naught. Heroes only did a 2.0/5 in the 18-49 "money demo," and 4.41 million viewers overall, the second lowest rated program from the big 5 of the night (the host of THE lowest rated show was probably still scarfing Letterman's chips).

Not a good sign to an programming executive running a network in free-fall panic.

So for we who still believe this show is pretty much the only reason we have left to own a television set, things look gloomy.

But believe it or not, there is still hope. We still got a shot.

And it is a realistic one IF WE don't panic and look at all of the options Claire and the specials have. And they are many.

Stay the course..

Have NBC simply bite the big one and give us one last season. Claire's jump DID change everything...the entire paradigm of the series shifted with the act that pretty much opened this in the first place. The specials have now been revealed....now what. This might be the thing that will revive the show IF the stories are told right and there is more action and heroics and less trying to get an Emmy.

Move the show...and make it an event..

Starting now, you have as many as 12 months to get this right. Of course there are some things you'll have to settle...like trying to keep Hayden away from the CW as an actress (she is producing HMS for the former WB), but it can be done.

Then you make the show into an event, after the NFL season...put it on Sundays and build it up. The competition is not that keen on that night, and even if it falters, you have a great way to give the series the send off if deserves.

Move it to SyFy...

It makes sense. NBC owns the cable channel. And even if the audience is cut in half, it would still be about the same as BSG in its last season.

Move it to USA...

Comcast seems to want to make USA their flagship, not NBC. It can be packages with WWE Raw to keep it on Monday nights. Again, 4.3 million can get you canned at a broadcast network, but on a cablenet, it would make you look like a genius.

Offer it to another broadcast network.

Iffy at best. CBS, no way. ABC? They're still trying to make V work. FOX? Possibly, but after being burned by Sarah Connor and Dollhouse, they may just take their one SciFi hit Fringe and be happy with it. The CW, however, would LOVE to have that 4.3 million. And since they now have Hayden as a producer anyway....

And if worse comes to worse....

You might want to ask the guy who plays Kaito what happened when a similar situation befell an NBC show with a bug cult following. They decided to do a movie. Eleven in fact. And these movies did make a buck or two.

Or maybe ask Zackary Q. Right now he seems to be the only one in the cast with job security.

The one thing, though....

DO NOT GIVE UP!

Support former Heroes in their movies and series. And let them know that the show we love, like the Cheerleader, is truly indestructable.

S4E19: Brave New World (recap)

Just when you thought you'd seen it all, the season finale of "Heroes" became a full-fledged 3-ring circus. So who prevailed in the Central Park showdown? Brace yourself for the madness and lets recap the circus acts one by one.

In the left ring...

While Sylar and Peter are busting out of their mental prison, Matt is upstairs entertaining a new visitor: Eli. He tries to mind-trick Eli into going away, but it doesn't work. Luckily for Matt, Sylar knocks the real Eli out and he survives another day. But while he should be thanking his nemesis, Matt's angry that Peter is Sylar's new BFF.

Because of this Peter is forced to go inside Eli's head and see what Samuel's planning. He tells them that Samuel is going to bury the crowd underground at Central Park. Matt doesn't want to let Sylar leave, but, Sylar convinces him to go inside his head. In the end Matt's still unsure of Sylar's true motive, but lets him go. And when they leave, he starts working on Eli.

In the center ring...

Still trapped underground, Noah is preparing to leave Claire fatherless. Now that he's about to die, he's afraid of what will happen when Claire's abilities are discovered. Claire still believes that people won't be averse to the specials. But Noah says it's human nature to turn on them. So before he bites the dust, he asks Claire to promise that she'll find a way to blend in. Claire doesn't make the promise before Noah goes unconscious.

She runs to the door, starts clawing through the dirt to escape and breaks a hole big enough for some water to seep through. Lo and behold, Tracy Strauss comes spilling into the trailer. She floods the Bennets' burial ground and they all float to the surface, where Lauren is waiting for them with a chopper to escort them to New York. Tracy needs a bit of time to regroup, so they leave her behind.

In the right ring...

Hiro has recovered quite nicely from brain surgery and is ready to recapture his simple life. He tells Ando they need to stop "butterfly man" Sam, but a nurse walks in and delivers a note from a patient down the hall. It's Charlie and she wants Hiro to stop by. When Hiro arrives at Charlie's hospital room, she has aged 65 years. She explains that Samuel transported her back to 1944, but that she had a good life. Hiro apologizes, but Charlie's just glad she got to see him before she dies. He offers to fix what Samuel, but Charlie has made her peace with it. Turns out, she had the life--and family--she always wanted, so Hiro lets her go. And he's just in time because Noah has called and they're needed in New York.

The Show Stopper

The Sullivan Bros. Carnival has arrived in New York and Samuel meets the day by delivering another rousing speech to his family. Once the carnies are on board, Samuel tells Emma that it's time for her to start playing the cello so that she can lure the poor, innocent New Yorkers to their deaths. Emma immediately realizes that Peter's dream is coming true and refuses to help. But Samuel employs puppet master Doyle to force Emma to play. Sam's so proud of his deviousness, but Edgar's skeptical about Samuel's intentions.

While Samuel readies himself for the show, Noah, Claire, Peter and Sylar arrive. Noah doesn't make it far before Edgar has him. And thankfully, he's ready to help Noah silence Samuel's nonsense for good.

Sylar send Peter to fight Samuel, while he heads to the house of mirrors to stop Emma. But he quickly realizes Emma's not pulling her own strings. Sylar asks Doyle to let him save Emma because she's going to kill thousands. Doyle's so drunk off of Sam's lies that he'd rather tango with the scalp-slitter. Eventually he loses focus and releases Emma, only to have her wipe him out with her cello. And Sylar becomes the hero he promised Matt he could be.

Claire arrives to face the carnies and make her final plea. This time, she reveals everything: that they are the source of Sam's power and that Sam killed Joseph. Samuel is so confident in his brainwashing that he denies the whole thing. That is, until Edgar, Noah and Eli (good job Parkman!) corroborate the story.

The carnies are convinced and they walk out, but Sam tries to unleash his fury before they get too far. Everyone, specials and humans alike, start running. Just when Sam's about to get nasty, Peter tackles him, absorbs his power, and uses it against him.

While they scuffle, Hiro and Ando finally arrive, Claire tells Hiro he must transport everyone out. Hiro is intimidated by such a large task, but Ando offers to supercharge his powers. With a shake of his head, the specials disappear. As for the butterfly man? He weakens without his precious family and collapses in defeat.

That's where volume 6 picks up. Peter and Emma reconcile. Sylar's feels good about his heroic turn and Lauren attempts to covers up the mess for the media. But, for the first time in Claire's life (not!) she's sick of hiding. So despite her father's plea, she draws the media's attention by climbing to the top of the ferris wheel...and jumping off.

It's a brave new world, indeed.

S4E16: Pass/Fail (recap/review)

The latest episode of “Heroes” entitled “Pass/Fail” took us on a trip to an alternate reality, or rather Hiro’s subconscious thanks to his brain tumor. We saw a lot of familiar faces from previous season’s including George Takei’s return as Kaito Nakamura, and like most of you I too couldn’t get the Star Trek connection between him and Zachary Quinto out of my head. Speaking of Quinto, he returned after his blink and you missed it appearance from last week, and spent the majority of his scenes with Claire. Between multiple cameos and bad monologues this episode of “Heroes” was less than extraordinary…

The Shows Plot:

“Heroes” follows a group of regular people who discover that they have special abilities that separate them from everyone else in the world. Some choose to hide their gifts, others try to use them for evil, and a rare few choose to use their powers for a greater good.

Title of this Week’s Episode: “Pass/Fail” Season 4: Episode 16

Hiro’s brain tumor causes him to slip into a coma, where he “awakens” in a dream state that features many important characters from his past. He’s put on trial for his previous transgressions, and must deal with the fall out from the decisions he’s made regarding his powers. Meanwhile, Sylar pays Claire an unexpected visit to get answers as to why he isn’t quite himself, and Samuel’s plan to impress his long-lost love, Vanessa, doesn’t go according to plan.

The Good:

David Anders: David Anders’ return as Adam Monroe was a definite plus for last night’s episode. He was an amazing villain on the show’s previous seasons and unlike Sylar he had some sort of direction. It was great to see him pop up as a prosecutor in Hiro’s dream, and how hilarious was it when he called Hiro out for reciting the opening to “Quantum Leap?”

Hiro and His Mother: The reunion between mother and son was beautifully done with dialogue and visuals. It was such a sweet moment between the two, and we finally got to see some acting range from Masi Oka.

The Bad:

Hiro’s Brain Tumor: The entire storyline surrounding Hiro’s tumor sounds like it was ripped from a bad soap opera. It’s an attempt to make Hiro less annoying and more valuable, but he still rubs me the wrong way. All of his quirks that used to be charming, have become simply irritating.

Samuel’s Seduction: Samuel’s attempts to walk down memory lane with his pseudo-girlfriend Vanessa was uncomfortable to watch. His obsession with her is unhealthy and unnatural. That’s why it was extra weird when she gave in and shared a milkshake with him. If I was her, I’d check to make sure it wasn’t laced with some type of drug.

Claire Bitches About Her Power AGAIN: Claire has been singing the same sad song about being “special,” since season one and it’s getting old. The conversation she had with Sylar-Gretchen was one big cliche. Her character refuses to show any kind of growth or development. They need to give her something better to do than whine every episode.

Overall:

“Pass/Fail” didn’t really serve a purpose for the overall story arc of this season. Sure, Hiro’s health was restored but was there any doubt in your mind that it wouldn’t be? Samuel went all Avalanche from X-Men and showed that he’s mad as hell and not going to take it anymore, and Sylar went all Dr. Phil on Claire. He ended up giving her some type of closure, but still didn’t find any for himself.

S4E15: Close to You (recap)

Noah voice overs and tells us that people do terrible things to one another as we watch a montage of people doing terrible things to one another. So, a light episode this week then?

Lauren and Noah argue about trying to find Edgar, and Noah blows up when Lauren brings logic into the conversation. She gets a hit on a ‘Vanessa Wheeler’ in her magic computer database and OMG IT’S ELLEN TIGH FROM BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, I JUST BECAME INVESTED. This explains all of Heroes – Vanessa is a cylon and she has been from the start. Anyway, she lived in the house that Samuel destroyed back in the day so Noah has to find her, and Samuel does too, and I bet this ends in a confrontation of some sort.

Matt is making breakfast for his family, and I honestly don’t understand how he’s escaped the police. I know he has that mind thing but still, it’s so unbelievable. He says he’s really embracing this stay at home dad thing, which secretly means he hates it, and sends his wife out to work. Noah appears in Matt’s house, assuming he knows anything about Samuel. Even though the last time Matt helped Noah he got Sylar stuck in his head, Noah plays on Matt’s fear that his own son could get recruited one day, so Matt agrees to help.

Ellen Tigh (I mean Vanessa) plays the cello and Matt and Noah accost her as she comes out of rehearsal. Matt brainwashes her into thinking she can trust the two of them. Ugh. Now she’s probably going to get murdered. She tells them that Samuel was sweet on her, even though his dad was her dad’s servant. One day he disappeared, then showed up in her room all ‘swagger and rock and roll’. She bailed when he asked her to marry him. Turns out Samuel is being a creeper lately, popping up in all sorts of locations and spouting some total crazy about how powerful he is. Noah decides it would be a great idea to have Vanessa trick Samuel by having calling him for a meeting, all in the hopes that the carnival will appear. I can help you with this one Noah – No.

Samuel kidnaps Vanessa while Eli and his multiple personalities distract Noah and Matt. Vanessa gets sent to the carnival, and Samuel creates a minor earthquake to make his escape. Matt’s pulls the car around, and they track the GPS they gave Vanessa. They get to the desert but can’t see the carnival of course, because they aren’t ~special~ enough. Noah still won’t talk to Claire, so when Matt tries to bring logic into this conversation, he gets yelled at too. Matt should go compare notes with Lauren.

Going back home, Matt is ready to start making dinner for his wife and tells Noah to stop ruining his life. That night, he tells his wife he thinks he’s a coward. Noah heads to Claire’s dorm and rambles about bridges and love and family before she tells him she’s late for something. Burn. He goes back home and Lauren shows up, and he confesses his love for her. What.

Lydia is bored with Samuel’s dreams or whatever yarn he’s spinning now about family, because he’s obsessed with getting Vanessa into the group. Lydia decides to rebel against it all and find their next leader, but he’s just ‘so far away’. She sends out some kind of psychic SOS and what do you want to bet this leader is going to be Peter? Sure enough, Peter wakes up from a deep sleep with a compass suddenly tattooed on his arm.

Peter calls Noah because he’s worried about this random compass tattoo showing up on his arm, when he hears Emma playing her cello from blocks away. Turns out, Emma used her siren call to summon him to her apartment. Using the cello for a booty call – awesome. He sees the compass symbol on the cello, and shows Emma his new ink. He takes her back to his apartment and shows her the compass and how it could be associated with EVIL. Angela shows up and has a total freak out over Emma knowing Peter before Emma bolts.

Peter is pissed because Angela had a dream about Emma and won’t share. Once Peter admonishes her for keeping secrets she tells him that Emma will kill thousands of people with her cello. Peter takes her ability so that he can see for himself. That night he has a crazy dream that Emma is in the house of mirrors playing her cello, crying, and suddenly Sylar is there talking about saving her. Peter of course wakes up and goes straight over to her place, destroying the cello. He doesn’t even explain first, he just SMASHES IT. That is not how you respond to a cello booty call PETER.

Hiro and Ando get to Mohinder’s loony bin and Hiro checks himself in. Ando manipulates the security grid with his ability and finds Mohinder. Ando switches Mohinder’s medication then accidentally swallows Mohinder’s meds. Since Ando’s out of the picture, it’s pretty much up to the legit crazy person to save the day. Hiro finds Mohinder and off his meds, Mohinder uses his super strength to bust himself out. They find Ando in a closet and they actually escape while Ando screams about swimming only it’s INSIDE OUT.

They run into the swamp and Ando tells Mohinder that Hiro is dying of a brain tumor. They keep running and Mohinder decides that electroshock therapy will fix Hiro, so Ando should get to it. Somehow this miracle cure works instantly, and Hiro teleports them out of there and into Noah’s apartment as he’s making out with Lauren.

Back at the carnival, Samuel is holding Vanessa against her will and good GOD he’s so creepy, touching her face all over and everything. He says he wants to show her something and if she doesn’t like it she can leave. We never find out what that thing is before the episode ends.

Next week Sylar decides to shove his tongue down Claire’s throat because she’s supposed to help him or some such thing. I bet that helps him get what he wants. How did you feel about this episode? At least we learned some things this week. Or did we? You tell me by leaving comments!

S4E13/14: Upon This Rock/Let It Bleed (Recap)

Welcome back from hiatus! This recap is going to be longer than usual since we were treated to a double feature tonight. Let’s not waste time here!

Remember that one woman, Emma? Yeah I didn’t until just now. She reapplied to medical school and didn’t get in, but that’s what happens when you drop out of school – you rarely go back. Remember that, kids. She goes home just in time for Samuel to knock on her door. He knows sign language and starts explaining gifts and how they’re the same. Apparently, he sent her the cello and it has the same compass mark on it that he has tattooed on his arm. Letting him in, he tells her all about how her ability works. He tells her that the cello was actually meant for someone else and that he lost her. Emma tells him how the damn thing cracked her wall, but he tells her she actually did it with her fear.

Samuel tells her that he needs help finding a man named Ian Michaels. Apparently, his ability is being mother nature. As they sit in the park, Sam tells her that her emotions actually become one with the music, and she can draw people to her, like a Siren. He asks her to try and draw Ian to her through her music. It’s kind of creepy how fast people start to gather, and I wonder where this Ian guy has been lurking to be called by her music so fast. Anyway, Ian stands next to a tree and it suddenly blooms with new leaves. He gets treated at the hospital (because he was homeless) and Samuel takes him away.

Over in Tokyo, Hiro appears and starts telling people that he’s from the Starfleet looking for his second in command, then he thinks he’s in Star Wars as he helps a woman deal with a purse snatcher. THEN he tells the ‘citizens of Caprica’ that they’re safe. (lol, BSG reference! I geeked out for a second, won’t lie.) The police finally take Hiro to Ando, but he keeps calling him Sancho, and all of Hiro’s thoughts and expressions are crossing with comics. His sister wants to call a neurosurgeon, but Ando wants to figure out what Hiro is talking about. They go to Hiro’s comic book hideout, and Ando somehow figures out that Hiro wants to go to a place called Arkham in Florida. Turns out, it’s a mental institution – oh that wouldn’t be the one Hiro dumped Mohinder in would it?

Claire joins the circus for a couple days and delivers some pancakes to Samuel who is shocked to see Claire and not Lydia. He covers some boxes with a coat and Claire notices that they’re Primatech boxes. He says he’s not interested in explaining the past. She quotes some college knowledge to him about choices in life and you know she’s not gonna let that box go unrifled through. Replicator guy has been following her and being all creepy. She has a chuckle over Lydia and her daughter bickering, and before Lydia can get upset, Claire explains that it’s just a great, normal experience. Claire then asks why Samuel wanted her in the circus, and Lydia tells her that it’s become an obsession to have as many people there are possible.

Because my ability is seeing the t.v. future, Claire goes to Samuel’s trailer to snoop but the Replicator is there reminding her that she’s on beautification duty, so hop to it. That night, Replicator is still following her around and watching her. She runs into the house of mirrors, because when someone is being replicated, you should replicate them MORE in a house of mirrors. She bests him and hits him with a stool before running to Samuel’s trailer to look in that box. She finds pictures and maps of a valley before the Puppet Master Doyle controls her right on out of the trailer. He thinks she’s a spy for her dad, but she’s more concerned that Sam’s collecting a bunch of people with abilities. Doyle is not going to let Claire ruin whatever is going to happen.

He tells Claire that Joseph made him better, and that he hasn’t actually done anything bad since he got there – holding Claire hostage notwithstanding. He finally lets her go so that she can go talk to Lydia to figure out what’s up. Lydia tells her that Joseph was originally the one in charge who really made the carnival a family, and Claire figures out that Samuel killed him. Lydia begs Claire to find someone who can stop Samuel, then Eli (replicator has a name!) grabs her up. Samuel gets upset that Eli holds her captive and Claire says she won’t go until Samuel tells her what happened to Joseph. He tells her that he lost control, and he tries to blame Joseph because he told Danko about them, and her father. He rationalizes that Claire’s own father lied, cheated, and killed to protect his family, and that this is no different. He takes her to the valley that he has a map of, where Ian is playing in the dirt. After Samuel parts the Earth so that there’s water, Ian makes an area of the dessert valley beautiful and lush.

Samuel tells her that this is going to be their new home, and that this is why he needs a bigger family. To build the future. She declines to be a part of Samuel’s family for the time being so that she can go back to her home. Samuel extends an open invitation to her and she’s left thinking Samuel is awesome. Finally checking her cell messages, she scrolls past some from Noah, then lands on one from Peter saying they have a lot to talk about.

In a funeral scene, Claire shows up to say goodbye to Nathan. The story told to the public was that Nathan was flying a plane that crashed. Claire is naturally pissed at Angela and Noah for doing the whole cover up to begin with. Peter’s so upset that Angela feels the only person he’ll listen to is Claire, and she follows him to the scene of an office shooting where he’s trying to be a hero. He tries to tell the gunman his story about being pissed as hell, but the gunman shoots him anyway. Later, Claire heals Peter, but not before lecturing him. Peter requests that Claire call her old ex West, who can fly, and we all know it’s because he wants that flying ability. Funny, I had NO idea West was still in her life. Huh.

After Claire’s gone, Samuel puts ink to paper to reveal a woman, his long lost love Vanessa, but then Doyle is flying through the air, and there’s Sylar! And really, who doesn’t see it coming that Sylar wants to kill all of these people with abilities? Of course, Samuel tries to tell Sylar that he has big plans for him, but Sylar isn’t hearing any of it. He decides to off Samuel first, but Samuel starts a dust storm right around Sylar that would have killed him, had he not nabbed Claire’s ability. He puts Sylar in Lydia’s trailer because he wants her to find out more about him. She goes to put the moves on Sylar and as they make out he remembers stuff from being Nathan, and Lydia tells him that he’s just lonely and wants to be loved. He absorbs her power, saying he doesn’t have to kill, and she calls him impotent. Hahaha.

Sylar starts searching for ink, but he can’t find any. Sam tells Sylar that he just needs a friend, someone who understand him and cares for him. He shows him a picture of Vanessa, who is his other half or something. Samuel them goes on to say that he is just like Sylar, not all bad, but not all good, and Sylar tells him to show the tattoo to prove it. The tattoo turns out to be of Claire, and he heads off to find her.

At home, Noah fails to notice the creepy shadow outside his window, and opens it right up. Lurking just outside is Edgar. But maybe Noah did notice him, because he tazers the crap out of him. Noah then goes down to a Japanese restaurant and asks to have it all to himself when his blond, ex partner shows up. I forget her name. Again. She brought some truth serum, and they find out that Edgar can’t go all that fast in the cold – Noah has him in a freezer. The interrogation begins, but blond lady agent interrupts just as Noah’s about to have fun with a knife. She suggests he start actually asking questions and listening. He figures out that Edgar doesn’t have a compass and can’t get home and Edgar reveals that he was exiled.

He goes on to say he was trying to capture Noah and bring him back to Samuel to hopefully not be exiled anymore and keep an eye on everyone. Noah proposes that he and Edgar work together to bring down Samuel, and lets him go upstairs to have some soup. Edgar tells him that the key to getting Samuel is Lydia, but the more Edgar hears about the family being taken apart, the more he doesn’t like the idea and he busts out of the handcuffs Noah put him in. He speeds out, taking every piece of information he’d shared with Noah with him. Blond agent lady tells Noah to call Claire and start repairing their relationship.

S4E12: The Fifth Stage (Alternative review from popwatc.ew.com)

“This whole night was like a bad Fellini film,” was how Gretchen summed up the most recent episode of Heroes. Okay, she was actually talking about her and Claire’s night in the Sullivan Brothers carnival. But either way, she was wrong, because a bad Fellini film would have been perfection compared to last night. Federico Fellini made plenty of bad movies, but his bad movies were never boring, mundane, or static. They were completely bats—. Just look here. Or here. Or here. Or here. Context doesn’t help! I’ve seen Satyricon five times, and I still can’t tell you what the hell is going on ever. (The movie’s also got a minotaur fight and a hermaphrodite heist; seriously, go watch Satyricon!)

If you ask me, Heroes could take a page from Fellini. Because considering the fact that this is a show about people with superpowers, it never really feels all that crazy. It feels like the most sanitized way to make a dark entertainment; like someone walked out of Batman Begins and said, “We want that, but nicer!” The only character who ever seems to have any fun on the show is Sylar, and what’s funny is that he’s not even really the villain anymore. He’s basically just there to keep things spicy. Instead, we keep getting a faceless parade of Big Bads with shadowy motivations who literally seem to be improvising their entire existence every two minutes (Bob Bishop, Papa Petrelli, and now Samuel Sullivan.)

Really, the show almost seems to be punishing Sylar for having any fun. Last night, yet again, somebody pulled the ol’ power drain on Sylar. “What the hell did you do to me?” Sylar asked. That’s practically his catchphrase. Peter spelled it out for Sylar/us: “You remember our Haitian friend?” A Haitian friend? I don’t think I remember him. What are his character traits? Where’s he from? I think I would remember having a Haitian friend. Does he have any nicknames?

Let’s run down the three plotlines:

Noah and Lauren: Detecting Detectives

Samuel had a task for a Carnival minion, a fellow with the ability to project copies of himself. (I marked down “Duplicater?” but Lauren later called him a “Multiplier,” which unfortunately recalls the Michael Keaton film Multiplicity.) Samuel: “I want you to go to the home of a man named Noah Bennet, and steal a box marked Primatech.” It’ll be right next to the box marked “Top Secret” and the safe marked “My Life’s Savings, the combination is 1-2-3-4, Stay Out Please.”

Noah was busy getting ready for his date with Lauren. Lauren showed up, they exchanged some banter (He: “I skipped over the sexual revolution.” She: “Who said anything about sex?”), but when he figured out that Claire stole his magic compass, they sprung into old-timey Company action to track her down. Bennet decided that now was the best time to tell Lauren about their retcon affair of the heart. (Line of the night: “I Haitianed myself?”)

Then Michael Keaton, sorry, the Multiplier attacked. I thought that his power meant that he actually duplicated himself, creating twins and then triplets (etc), but when Noah shot one of him, the body disappeared like a dead body in the PS2 Grand Theft Auto games, so I guess the copies aren’t autonomous beings? Noah and Lauren fled to the bathroom to plan a counterattack, but by the time they came out, Michael Keaton had already ran off. And he took the box marked Primatech! Noah hit himself in the head. Should’ve put those files in the box marked “Totally Unimportant Stuff,” they would’ve never looked in there.

Nathan and Peter: The Least Twisty Death Twist Ever

I’m going to skip over the vast amount of stuff that happened in the land of the Petrellis this week, because most of it was bad. Okay, okay, quick recap: Mama Petrelli had a complete personality makeover and told Peter to just move on already about his dead brother. That’s last year’s news, Pete! Yesterday’s tweet, you feel me? Peter wouldn’t have it, though: he wanted his brother back. Sylar surprised him in the hospital elevator, and because extras cost money, him and Peter fought on the one abandoned floor of the hospital. Peter totally Haitianed Sylar, and then nailed him into the ground, and then Haitianed him some more, until Sylar morphed into Nathan.

Peter was happy to have his brother back, but Nathan just looked miserable. “I’m tired, Pete.” Peter tried to cheer him up by bringing him back to that same old rooftop from way back in season 1, the one that Peter fell off of, right before Nathan learned that he could fly. I can still remember that moment – it was the show’s first cliffhanger, and it ended the first episode with a moment of zippy revelation. You felt like anything, absolutely anything, could happen on this show.

So I got a genuine pang of nostalgia during this scene. How could you not? Especially since so much of what Nathan was talking about – regret, exhaustion, a fond yet sad remembrance of better times – feels just about right for a show this far into a downward spiral. Even the dialogue had some of that season 1 pop! Nathan: “I told you we could both fly.” Peter: “You denied it.” Nathan: “It was an election year.”

Nathan decided to throw himself off the building. Peter grabbed him, and as they held hands, Nathan literally yelled out every Go On Without Me cliché in the book. “Tell Mom I love her! Take care of Claire! You can do anything, Pete! I gotta feeling the world ain’t seen nothing yet!” And down he fell.

Here’s the thing: even though the shot of him falling looked silly and green-screeny, there was something addictive about it. As he fell, he slowly morphed into Sylar, and even though the specifics of it all didn’t make much sense, the beautiful weirdness of the image – seeing Nathan’s reserved, peaceful face fade slowly into Sylar’s dark grin – was, frankly, breathtaking. I wish the show were brave enough to do more things like this: real emotion, instead of aimless plot teases that go nowhere.

The Carnival of Shadowy Motivations

Speaking of shadowboxing! Over in the Carnival, nothing was making any sense. Samuel didn’t seem worried at all that Hiro disappeared into thin air last episode. Nor did he seem concerned that the Tattoo Lady knows that he killed his brother. Nope, the Morality Switch on Samuel’s back was switched to Good this week, and he spent the episode in full-on Santa Claus mode.

He welcomed Claire and Gretchen into the Carnival like a practiced Ringmaster. “Free passes! The whole night’s on me! Everything!” The bulk of the episode was spent on Claire learning all about the Carnival. And what did they learn? Well, I’m still kind of sorting it out. The treatment of the Carnival changes every other week on this show. One week, it’s a safe haven for harmless superhumans who just want to live in peace. The next week, Samuel calls up any one of his random minions and says, “Go, do crime!” and they do it, no questions asked. The next week, Samuel seems to have an incredibly fragile hold on his people. The next week, he seems to be their unquestioned emperor.

I’m genuinely interested in the Carnival, and I’m willing to admit that, in this one situation, the writers might possibly be a bit smarter than us. So let’s examine this like we believe the truth won’t turn out to be stupid. Samuel says that the point of the Carnival is for his folk to live out in the open, and “To make money, the most honest way we can.” This seems to be like flawed logic, based on the workings of the carnival. We saw a telekinetic guy purposefully ruin a loutish former Minor League pitcher’s throw in the old Milk Bottle game, but then give a cute girl some help so she could win a pink unicorn.

Why would a loutish former Minor League pitcher care about a pink unicorn? And more importantly, isn’t that just another form of dishonesty? It’s not as if any of the carnival folk are really living “out in the open,” as Samuel regularly suggested; they’re allowed to show a bit more of their powers, but only because they’ve trapped themselves in the carnival. Heck, as we saw, even the subtle use of telekineticism was enough to incite violence: the loutish former Minor League pitcher gave Samuel a good beating.

If I’m to understand the end of the episode, Samuel’s big long-term goal is to build a Promised Land for superpowered people, which, again, isn’t the same as living out in the open. A Promised Land is great if you want to hang out with earthy pseudo-hippies and follow the orders of anyone named Sullivan, but what if you want to live anywhere else on earth?

Listen, one of the hardest things in serial narrative television is believably filling the actual existence of a society of characters who were invented to seem mysterious. For the first two seasons of Battlestar Galactica, the Cylons mostly existed as space phantoms with spider-like ships who could jump into orbit at any moment, plus a few sleeper agents who looked just like us. In the third season, the show worked hard to establish a believable system for Cylon society, and it changed the entire central conflict of the show.

Conversely, on Lost, the third season took the viewer into the society of the Others, another phantom band of villains, and the result was ruinous, because the whole society made no sense. The Others seemed to run on a system of government based half on Shirley Jackson’s The Lottery and half on Beneath the Planet of the Apes. The show only really recovered when it sent the Others to the Temple for the entirety of the fourth season. (Unfortunately, the fifth season was all about the Dharma Initiative, another shadowy organization that made hardly any sense at all when some light was shined upon it.)

Based on the end of last night’s episode, we’re only going to see more of the Carnival folk, and I’m cautiously optimistic that, with a bit of actual narrative forward momentum, they might become a bit more sharply focused than they have been so far. But let’s be fair; this half of the season ended pretty miserably. Samuel was back at his brother’s grave, giving a speech that was practically a carbon copy of the speech that started this season. As if daring us to turn away, the show then did a mid-season finale montage of all our favorite characters, including a completely non sequitur shot of Hiro running with Mohinder and Ando through the woods. Oh also, that deaf girl who sees sounds was playing some music. I forget if we saw Parkman, but I’m sure that when the show returns he’ll be useless yet incredibly important for some random reason.

I’m trying to think of something nice to say, but honestly, Nathan Petrelli was my favorite character. I’m having a hard time trying to be optimistic. I hope that Claire turns evil, because that would be crazy. I hope that when the show returns, all the Heroes will join together against Samuel. I hope that the show’s narrative can become more focused. I hope that Sylar never has to suffer from power blockage, memory loss, or any other power the Haitian comes up with to sap all the energy from the plot. I hope that Mohinder will die again, this time for real. I hope.

Ratings Up for Final '09 Heroes....but not much

As Heroes takes their holiday vacation, the final episode of 2009 has an increase in viewers thanks to reruns on CBS and and uncharactaristic slip for the Grinch on ABC.

But it was not by much:

Fox was first at 8 p.m. with a 4.8 for “House,” followed by ABC with a 3.0 for “Grinch” (2.9) and “Shrek” (3.2). NBC was third with a 2.5 for “Heroes,” CBS fourth with a 1.9 for repeats of “How I Met Your Mother” and “Accidentally on Purpose,” Univision fifth with a 1.4 for “El Nombre del Amor” and CW sixth with a 1.1 for “One Tree Hill.” Source: http://www.medialifemagazine.com/artman2/publish/Overnights_50/ABC_s_Grinch_special_takes_a_tumble.asp

As a matter of fact if you look at those numbers, Heroes was actually in SECOND place against Big Greenie.

Next Heroes will be Jan 4th as they move back to 9/8 central following the return of Chuck.

S4E12: The Fifth Stage (Recap)

Claire and Gretchen make their way to the carnival. In hopes of finding a place for Claire to fit in, they decide to spend the night at the carnival at Samuel's insistence.

Peter is determined to find Nathan and get rid of Sylar forever. Despite Angela's concern, Peter leaves to find Nathan only to be ambushed by Sylar at the hospital. The two spar until Peter's newly gained power (from the Haitian) disables Sylar's abilities. Peter tortures Sylar until Nathan comes back.

Noah confesses his feelings for Lauren when one of Samuel's henchman attacks the pair. Noah and Lauren are unharmed, but the multiplying man leaves with Noah's files.

Upon seeing the carnival's benevolent acts, Claire's conviction begins to falter. When a human attacks Samuel, Claire drives the man away and displays her power. At the end of the night, Claire decides to spend the weekend at the carnival and Gretchen leaves.

Nathan confides in Peter that he is losing the battle with Sylar. The brothers go to the rooftop where Nathan first displayed his power. Despite Peter's insistence on Nathan's existence, Nathan jumps off the rooftop and Sylar's persona takes over.

(This is the last Heroes for 2009. After a one month break, Heroes returns on Jan 4th at 9/8 Central, after the return of Chuck)

Yesterday, someone at NBC Universal replied to an inquiry I made and explained to me where the Spotlight section is now and where the TAMi should be.

After loading http://www.nbcumv.com/, you go to "Network/Programs" and then to "NBC Entertainment". There is then a big flash window that displays ads for three NBC shows on its first page. The Spotlight section is on the second page of that window.

Currently, the second page has another two ads for NBC shows and an ad for the "Weekly TAMi posted on October 7, 2009". However, when I click to download the TAMi, I'm taken to a non-existent page.

I've replied about this, and will post here what I find out.

UPDATE> My contact confirmed that the link was broken and that it should get fixed shortly. In the mean time, I was forwarded the TAMi file, so here's the relevant data for Heroes (also posted to HeroesWiki):

Ratings Trends Hopeful For Heroes??

Short term (4 week) ratings trends indicate the renewal prospects for Castle, The Good Wife, Heroes, Parks & Recreation and Law & Order have improved.
Since I am keeping individual show episode ratings this season (unlike in past years when I just relied on Nielsen averages), I’d been meaning to look at short term ratings trends explicitly at some point (instead of just eyeballing them). I meant to start including them in the regular posts this week, but the Nielsen power outage delay made that impractical. However, in preparation for next weeks posts, I set up the spreadsheet and did the calculations for this week, so I figured I would post them (not color coded).
Remember that on a season average basis, an Index of below 0.92 has in the past indicated a scripted show is in danger of cancellation. On a short term Index basis, I haven’t checked the history. And to be honest, there’s likely more in these numbers than I’ve drawn out from my cursory scan, but shows with 4 week Indexes over their season Indexes would seem to have improving chances. Whether that turns out to be the case, we shall see.

The blue Renew / Cancel Index numbers are calculated the same as they always have been. A show’s season average adults 18-49 rating divided by its networks season average adults 18-49 rating. The 4 week Indexes divide a show’s 4 week running 18-49 ratings average by the networks running 4 week ratings average. The number of repeats during a short period can cause misleading results. Not sure if I can do something simple to show that or not.

S4E11: Thanksgiving (Recap)

Before touching Parkman’s hand and no doubt ending up with unintended consequences in Heroes Season 4 Episode 10, Nathan decided that he doesn’t exist any more because he’s becoming Sylar. Meanwhile, Suresh had his own trouble. He wasn’t killed, but he was locked up in the nuthouse.

Samuel’s got his hands on the film that he wanted now. He’s watching the part where he’s being born, a disaster waiting to happen.

Hiro wants to know where and when Charlie is. Samuel is not ready to play just yet, and Hiro can’t make him since it’s not like he can just kill the only person who knows where to find Charlie. But smile, it’s Thanksgiving.

HRG runs into Lauren at the supermarket, where he checks out some yams before inviting her for dinner.

Peter goes to visit his mom, who says that Nathan’s dead body was a shapeshifter, and Parkman is unbalanced and can’t be trusted. Not buying this story, the question is simple. Is Nathan really dead? Yeah, Nathan would like to know the answer to that, too.

Claire’s surprised to find that her dad brought a date. No, not a date. Just an old friend. Mom will understand.

Hiro is not quite ready to enjoy Thanksgiving. First of all, they don’t celebrate that in Japan. Second, Samuel is a liar liar pants on fire. If he did fix the past, though, that would lead some to believe that Joseph should still be around. They fail to realize that Samuel’s goals were more selfish than that. That said, Lydia wants to go back to eight weeks ago so she can see what happened to Joseph.

Angela tells the boys that they really did see Nathan’s body, although his mind still lives on in his current body.

As if Thanksgiving dinner isn’t awkward enough, Sandra’s boyfriend Doug suggests going around the table and saying what they’re thankful for. This can only end badly. When they get to Claire, she’s just not feeling it. She’s thinking about dropping out of school.

Back to the night Joseph died. He warns his brother that he has the power to kill millions. Because of that, he has to be controlled. It’s then that Samuel learns that Suresh was instructed to burn the film. Furthermore, a man from the government is coming to take Samuel in. Well, that’s about all that needs to be said before Joseph gets killed by his brother, which Lydia and Hiro witness.

Doug tells Claire this will all blow over. Stuff like this happens to everyone. Really? So she grabs a knife and slits her arm. Perhaps a visit from Gretchen will cheer her up.

Nathan informs his family that Sylar’s in there with him. Then a freaky light show happens. No need to get an exorcist, though. Sylar’s back. What’s for dinner?

Samuel just learned that the person who killed his brother is there sitting at the table. Edgar speaks up… Samuel is the one who murdered Joseph. The time traveler saw it. Hiro denies seeing anything. Perhaps, then, Edgar killed Joseph. Before Samuel can make Edgar suffer the same fate as his brother, Hiro freezes time, telling Edgar he has to run away to live to fight another day.

Sylar finds out that Nathan’s not so dead after all. He can control Sylar, just like Sylar controlled Parkman all that time.

After her visit with Gretchen, Claire tells her dad she’s going back to school. What she’s really doing is taking the compass she stole from him and seeing where it leads.

Peter promises his mom that he’ll find a way to get his brother alive again.

'Heroes' tumbles to 5.1 million

Heroes hit a new series low Monday night, according to the latest viewing figures.

The 8pm instalment pulled in just 5.07m for NBC, down around 280k on last week's performance.

It was beaten in the hour by CBS comedies How I Met Your Mother and Accidentally On Purpose, which logged 8.44m and 7.76m at 8pm and 8.30pm, and Fox's House, which had 12.95m. The CW's One Tree Hill was last for the hour with 2.63m.

At 9pm, Two And A Half Men and The Big Bang Theory put in 14.07m and 13.49m respectively. Trauma interested 5.16m for NBC, 7.8m watched Lie To Me on Fox, and The CW's Gossip Girl had 2.24m.

ABC's Dancing With The Stars averaged an impressive 18.74m between 8pm and 10pm.

At 10pm, CSI: Miami took 13.49m for CBS, 10.86m tuned in for ABC's Castle, and The Jay Leno Show grabbed 4.46m for NBC.

Dear NBC: Let’s not spoil your biggest cliff hangers of the season anymore in your previews for the next week’s episode, okay? It’s just a helpful suggestion!

Hiro is still trapped in the circus, and it’s because Samuel wants him to go back in time eight weeks ago to get Coyote Sands research film from Mohinder before he destroys it. We flash back to nine weeks ago and see that Mohinder is in India teaching, and he has a girlfriend who urges him to trash all of Chandra’s old research, and Mohinder obliges. Of course he goes and gets it once his girlfriend goes to bed and watches a tape reel labeled ‘Samuel’. In it, Chandra says that when more than one person with abilities is in the same room with Samuel, it causes his ability to increase in power. From the research, Mohinder is able to create a compass like the one Samuel has. Mohinder’s girlfriend says that if he disappears, she won’t wait for him. So of course…

…Mohinder goes to carnie town and talks to Joseph, who tells Mohinder that he’s kept Samuel in the dark about his ability, that he’s never told him how powerful it could be. He advises that the reel should be destroyed, and we cut to see Samuel eavesdropping on the entire conversation. He confronts Mohinder in a hotel room, demanding to know what was on the reel, but Mohinder says he’ll never tell. Samuel smashes a rock and flings the remains into Mohinder’s body and leaves, but Hiro has already appeared on scene and fitted his old pal with a bullet proof vest after switching out the reels. Mohinder says he won’t disappear for eight weeks so that Hiro can get Charlie back, so Hiro somehow gets him into a loony bin in a padded cell wearing a straight jacket, where the doctor’s mistake him for another patient and dope him unconscious.

Giving the reel to Samuel, Hiro doesn’t get Charlie back right away, and Samuel leaves to go meet with Tracy.

Nathan/Sylar is back in D.C. and Peter is with him, trying to figure out why he can’t remember a week of his life. His mother apparently smoothed things over at the office by telling everyone that Nathan was simply on vacation, but the Haitian shows up to tell Peter the truth about his brother. The Haitian gives Peter directions to a storage facility and tells him to GO ALONE, but no one in this show ever listened to directions, so of course he takes Nathan. In the facility, they find the real Nathan’s dead body. Nathan/Sylar touches his dead body and has a flash of Sylar and Matt. After figuring out that Matt is in a hospital, Peter and Nathan go to Midland and Peter heals him. Matt tries to tell them what happened, but Sylar takes over Matt’s body and tells Nathan that with a touch, it can all be over and he can be whole again.

A touch happens, but it’s just a brush, and Nathan flies away with Peter after accidentally knocking him out. He flies them to the Grand Canyon…or some Canyon, and Peter tells Nathan that he’s not leaving him alone, and they fly off together. Meanwhile, Matt is healed and mind warping a cop into giving him his clothes so that he can escape the hospital. Back in Peter’s apartment, Nathan has a sad moment when he realizes that all Peter is going to see when he looks at him is Sylar, but we never really establish what’s going on inside his head with Sylar being there.

Tracy is contemplating running away to join the circus while drinking coffee in a diner, when she gets so agitated that she accidentally freezes her coffee mug. She goes to Bennet’s but instead of finding HRG she finds Claire. Tracy’s power is going haywire, and she keeps freezing things. She freezes the steaming hot bathwater she was in, then accidentally freezes Claire solid. She breaks off Claire’s foot while trying to move her to the tub, but Claire heals and unfreezes and they share a good laugh. Tracy explains that she’s really thinking about heading to carnie town, and Claire tells her she should do it, if she thinks that’s what’s best for her. HRG walks in with groceries, sees Claire’s still frozen foot on the table (she’s since grown a new one) and asks how their day was. It really was the best part of the episode.
(Have not seen, but this is what Heroes has been sorely missing, humor and sight gags based on the abilities).

As previously mentioned, she does meet with Samuel, hoping to run away from her old life to a place where she’ll be accepted.

Okay, bottom line – I want to stop time hopping and get to the bottom of these two story lines of Nathan/Sylar and Samuel. Can I please just get Sylar back to his badassness? No more of this Nathan stuff. And unless the Samuel story line is going to be wrapped up in a really cool twist, it doesn’t seem like it’s going to have much more to offer. And, sorry Hiro, but I’m pretty sure that Charlie is somewhere else: a place called FOX on a show called Glee.

Kate Vernon Becomes a Hero

It seems that sci-fi fans can expect a familiar face on a hit NBC series sometime this season. Heroes star Greg Grunberg revealed on his Twitter account today that Battlestar Galactica alum Kate Vernon will appear in Heroes sometime this season.

GET TO KNOW YOUR NEW ALIEN INVADERS — ER, NEIGHBORS!
In advance of the main course of recap, I offer an appetizer platter of observations — three things we learned about The Visitors in last night's V.

THEY'RE EARLY! Gone-native alien Ryan (Morris Chestnut) — needing a patch for the painful rip to his human skin suit sustained during last week's ill-fated resistance confab — sought help from a fellow incognito ET named Angelo. As the mechanic-cum-surgeon squirted Fasting Acting Miracle-Gro Flesh gel into Ryan's gash with a Flash Gordon cocking gun, their conversation turned to the monolithic star destroyers parked in Earth's atmosphere. Newsflash! Those mothers ain't supposed to be here… yet. The timetable was accelerated. Why?

THEY'VE GOT THEIR OWN GITMO! Marcus (Christopher Shyer), second in command to alien leader Anna (Morena Baccarin), tortured a would-be member of The Resistance at an undisclosed, dramatically lit location. The Vs' version of water-boarding: stripping you down to your bulging cod piece, then strapping you to a giant porcelain birdbath (or bidet; you choose) and casting illusions of your worst fears on your tummy. In this poor rebel's case: snakes. The lingering question: Is Anna aware of these clandestine renditions and black site beat-downs — or is Marcus running a conspiracy behind her exquisitely dressed back? Bolstering the latter possibility:

ANNA AND MARCUS DON'T SEE EYE-TO-FLUTTERY EYE ON HOW TO SERVE MANKIND Anna had a sharp exchange with Marcus while flipping though a holographic catalogue of Earthly couture. She selected a white kimono and coolly noted, '''I'm told in Japan this both conveys the respect of tradition and the allure of submission.'' Marcus: ''I'm not sure that's the message you want to send.'' Anna shot him a withering gaze. ''You still don't understand humanity.'' Talk of ''submission'' is the kind of thing we'd expect to hear from diabolical reptilian monsters intent on dosing mankind with paralyzing kindness and then eating us alive for dinner. But if you believe as I do that Anna is a sincere reformer determined to improve our woeful condition, we could also interpret her to mean that engaging Earthlings and coaxing them to change requires tact and deference. Regardless, Marcus didn't agree. My guess is that he regards humanity as a planet of damn dirty apes that need to whipped and rifle-butted into being obedient little monkeys. Schism! Shades of: The Jacob/Man in Black debate about rehabbing and managing unruly, sinful man in the season finale of Lost. [This recap's obligatory forced Lost connection has now been fulfilled.]

Having dazzled us last week with extravagant spaceships and enticingly exotic extra-terrestrials, V's second episode scaled back the pricy pseudo-cinematic ambition and shifted to a more sustainable gear — a Trust No One paranoid thriller like Invasion of the Body Snatchers, tailored for a culture coached to worry about sleeper cells in the suburbs. (Be honest: How many of you really sweat that?) Where the pilot was briskly paced and meaty with ideas, ''There Is No Normal Anymore'' was slow and small and missing much of the Big Picture musing on the Vs' global impact that gave this otherwise ho-hum alien invasion yarn its promising point of distinction. Yeah, there was a throwaway line here and there about an alien-inspired psychotherapy boom or geopolitical significance of the United States, but I wanted more, and I was disappointed. All week, ABC promoted V with the Muse song ''Uprising,'' which I thought was a perfect fit: this new V should be mythic and melodramatic, politically charged and comic book fantastic, brilliantly produced and raucously thrilling. Alas, ''… No Normal Anymore'' didn't quite get there. This show needs to be more interesting, more fun — Battlestar Galactica, but with less bleakness. (Not that bleak can't be fun. In fact, in my more pessimistic moods about V, I nurture the fantasy of NBC pulling the now-complete BSG out of mothballs and putting it up V. If broadcast TV is really that interested in politically charged, philosophically provocative humans vs. aliens sci-fi saga, why not show them — and V — how it should be done?)

For now, I watch on faith, buoyed by glimmers of hope. Elizabeth Mitchell can make me believe in anything. The Visitors — embodied by inscrutable Anna — continue to be a metaphor and mystery worthy of parsing and theorizing. My take: Anna is sincere about wanting to bring peace, love, and universal health care to the world — but her advisors are conspiring against her. (A lengthy elaboration of this theory, complete with time travel head-hurtyness, can be found at the close of this recap.) And has the subject of V's much-discussed political subtext shifted? Forget the Obama allegory. After last night, I'm now wondering if Anna = NaIve Commander-in-Chief and Marcus = Hawkish Vice President Who's Puppet-Mastering His Boss From His Secret Torture Chamber Bunker. I'm not trying to ruffle Left or Right feathers — I'm just saying that I suspect V is engineered to reflect the political energies of the whole decade, not just the past year.

Last post shows that Heroes last night hit a series low. But that is not the whole story.

For, though, Heroes has been languising in the 60's in the as-the-program-airs Nielsens, Heroes is the 10th most popular program on DVRs. SO when you add the DVR numbers to the season-to-date on-air numbers, Heroes total numbers shoot up 30.8%! That's the second biggest increase to on-air numbers in that top 10 (the biggest was FOX's Fringe.)

So...how do we get people to watch HEROES FIRST?

S4E9; SHADOWBOXING (RECAP)

Another week, another episode! Previously, Sylar switched places with Matt so that he’s in control of his body, Peter got a nifty new healing ability, and Gretchen was almost murdered by Rebecca who is part of carnie town.
Gretchen and Claire lie to their new sorority sisters when they freak out after seeing Claire heal and Becky disappear right in front of them. Their lie: That the hazing must have included drugging their water. Gretchen and Claire are left alone, and the former says that she is definitely not okay with trying to be killed. Claire calls her dad who brings along the Haitian and wipes the sorority girl’s minds while Gretchen stays alone in the dorm room. The Haitian tags along with Claire while HRG searches Rebecca’s room, and Claire gets to the dorm in time to see Gretchen packing a bag. It’s all just a little bit too freaky for her and she leaves; the Haitian following to make sure she’s safe. As soon as Claire’s alone, Samuel shows up.

Samuel tells Claire that it’s easier to relate to people when they’re just like you, which is why he started the carnival. At the same time he tries to recruit Claire, HRG is confronted by Becky. She tells him that he killed her father while she hid under the bed and watched the whole thing go down. She says that she wished that no one would find her and that was when her ability to turn invisible manifested itself, but she never understood why she couldn’t wish for her dad to be okay. In revenge, she’s going to hurt both HRG and Claire. Before she can, someone comes looking for her and she disappears. HRG leaves and makes it back to Claire’s dorm just in time to meet Samuel and hear his pitch to Claire.

HRG winds up taking Samuel into custody (can he do that now? Where was he even planning on taking him?) so that he can get answers about the compass. In all likelihood, it points people in the direction of the carnival, but before we can find out for sure Becky shows up. She’s going to try and kill HRG, but Samuel tazers her. HRG literally pushes Claire to the ground, but she begs him not to hurt Becky and Samuel, and together they run away. Claire gives HRG that look. He walks her back to her dorm and that night she looks longingly at Gretchen’s side of the room. Did I mention she’d told her roommate that she was too important to lose and that everything’s been charged with what the writers hope is unresolved sexual tension? Yeah.

Sylar is taking Matt and his body to New York. Sylar taunts Matt, but it’s Matt who has the last laugh because he’s planted his service revolver in his suitcase. The metal detector goes off, and Sylar tries to use Matt’s ability. “You may be able to control my body but I will NEVER let you control my ability.” Sylar is taken into custody screaming that he’s a cop. Four hours later they’re on their way only to get a flat tire. Matt’s getting a little too confident in his razzing of Sylar though, and when a nice guy pulls over to help them, Sylar kills him. Matt rages that Sylar just killed a man, and Sylar turns the tables: “No, I didn’t. You did.” He tells Matt that he’s in charge and can kill anyone, anywhere, so no more roadblocks on the way to find Peter Petrelli for answers.

They stop at the Burnt Toast Diner and Sylar tells Matt that he tried to kill a waitress there once, and when Matt won’t tell him what happened to his body, he decides to start killing people. Matt finally relents at that prospect and tells Sylar everything while Sylar doodles on a napkin. Sylar says that now he’s going to find Nathan, then kill everyone involved with his body swap. Before he can do that, the police show up. Matt used his ability to make Sylar doodle that he was going to kill everyone. In order to keep HRG, Angela Petrelli et al safe, he makes Sylar motion to draw a weapon and the police shoot him about six times in the chest, killing him.

There’s been a massive train crash, and Peter is going around saving lives, but every time he heals someone, it drains his energy. Emma watches the chaos in the E.R., and when doctors get to be too busy, she starts stitching a patient up, much to Peter’s surprise. She tells him he should stop using his ability if it effects him this way, and he scoffs that then he’d just be ordinary. She finally confesses to him that she dropped out of med school after her nephew drowned while she was babysitting. After she saves a little girl’s life, Peter convinces her to give med school another chance. When Peter gets home, Sylar/Nathan shows up, having woken up in carnie town with Nathan’s face and flying out before anybody saw him.

Charlies Gives Heroes Ratings Glee!

Jayma Mays boosts 'Heroes' ratings

Jayma Mays' return to Heroes helped to boost the show's ratings, overnight viewing figures show.
The episode, which saw Hiro travel three years into the past to try to save Charlie from the hands of Sylar, pulled in 6.2m for NBC in the 8pm hour - the best figure for season four so far. The previous high of 6m was achieved in the 'Redemption' opener.

After Heroes, Trauma and The Jay Leno Show logged 6.2m and 4.3m at 9pm and 10pm respectively.
How I Met Your Mother and Accidentally On Purpose put in 9.1m and 8.5m for CBS during the 8pm hour, then 13.6m watched Two And A Half Men at 9pm. The Big Bang Theory followed at 9.30pm with 12.7m.
Over on ABC, a two-hour episode of Dancing With The Stars managed 16.2m at 8pm, then 9.7m tuned in for Castle at 10pm.

One Tree Hill and Gossip Girl interested 2.4m and 1.9m for The CW at 8pm and 9pm respectively.
Fox's coverage of the World Series Game 5 averaged 17.1m between 8pm and 11pm.

S4E8: Once Upon A Time In Texas (recap)

When "Heroes" deals with ordinary people dealing with extraordinary abilities, the results are hit and miss. But when it deals with the intricacies of time travel, it almost always rushes headfirst into a brick wall of fail. Tonight's episode, "Once Upon a Time in Texas," shows another version of the fateful day before Peter Petrelli saved the cheerleader and (temporarily) saved the world in Season 1. What transpired tonight was unfortunately little more than another example in the ever-expanding saga of "Hiro Never, Ever Learns."

The best part of tonight's episode? (Besides learning Samuel killed Mohinder, singlehandedly turning him from the show's villain to Ultimate Champion?) Charlie calling Hiro out for his selfish behavior in trying to go back in time in order to save her life. We (as well as Hiro) already know about her aneurysm from Season 1's "Six Months Ago," in which his original attempt to save her life lost to her brain clot. How that death means she's alive in this particular iteration of the past is anyone's guess, as "Heroes" has never much subscribed to the "whatever happened, happened" theory that "Lost" tends to espouse. Theirs is more, "whatever happens this week, happens this week."

Attending to Hiro's potentially apocalyptic lovelorn mission is Samuel, sent back in time by a dying Arnold to make sure Hiro doesn't render the time-space fabric asunder and create the type of horrific world in which dogs and cats cohabitate. (Mass hysteria, I hear.) Samuel intuits the loopholes created by Hiro's meddling, and helps the Nakamura correct those errors so that Hiro can achieve his dream of living happily ever after. What follows is a complicated set of cause-and-effect, by the end of which roughly eight Hiros were one step behind the other, each making sure to pick up the slack left by the previous iteration. It's like "Primer" with subtitles and Knight Rider t-shirts. No wonder time travel gives Hiro and Arnold tumors: I'm developing one just trying to understand what's going on.

Hiro's plan to save Charlie? Tease Sylar with tales of the future in exchange for the removal of Charlie's aneurysm. I must confess that seeing pure, unadulterated, Season 1 Sylar again made me more than a little happy. The way he mentally toyed with Charlie early in the episode reminded me a touch of Adelle Dewitt in the latest, greatest episode of "Dollhouse," slipping in menacing threats amidst nominally banal conversation. But I don't need to pour through my Season 1 DVDs to know that Sylar at this point was more of a "slice first, ask questions later" kinda guy. While I enjoyed Hiro using his power to counter Sylar's telekinesis, Sylar's agreeing to help Charlie reeked more of weekly plot need rather than consistent characterization. Would a later iteration of Sylar agreed? Probably. But that Sylar's a long way from the Burnt Toast Café.

Similarly, Charlie's forgiveness of Hiro for his "selfish" actions in saving her at the expense rang false. Her earlier condemnation? As mentioned before: totally accurate, and completely earned. Charlie would be unable to live with the guilt, and would want to distance herself as far from him as possible in the aftermath. Hiro's stunned to learn this, somehow forgetting her peace with death in "Six Months Ago" in much the same way that Hiro always, always forgets the most important warnings about his God-like abilities. Rather than accept the (borrowed) moments they had, Hiro has now condemned her to a life quite literally stuck in time. What time? Only Samuel knows, using Arnold's dying breaths to put her somewhere only he knows in order to control the younger, more powerful time manipulator. (My guess? In the plague-filled future along with Peter's Irish girlfriend, Caitlin. OK, that's not so much a theory as fanfic. But the line's sooo close, you know?)

So Hiro's now stuck working for Samuel, undoubtedly a hell for him. And since I had to spend nearly a third of this episode watching Elisabeth Röhm's Lauren making moon eyes at Noah Bennett, I can speak about hell from a personal perspective. I'm guessing her character is single because she thinks things like "handing a guy a motel room key 37 hours before his daughter is destined to die" is a smooth move. I'm not the biggest Röhmaniac or anything, but I don't think any actress could have taken on this character and made it non-groanworthy.

Now, I'm all for filling in the gaps through the clever revisiting of familiar scenes. But seeing Noah Bennett recontextualized so brilliantly in "Company Man" made this particular iteration all the more painful. I get that the stress of his dual life made his home life difficult, and clearly these flashbacks were designed to foreshadow the domestic problems that he faces in the show's present. But would the same man that begged (and then forced) Isaac to paint the future high then spend precious Sylar-seeking minutes telling a fellow Company employee the equivalent of, "It's not you, it's me"? Exactly. All filler, no killer.

At episode's end, we're left with our first substantial glimpse into Samuel's actions: his apparent murder of Mohinder. Now, you might rightfully ask, "Does the show seriously want to think that this entire volume is about saving one of the show's most historically loathed characters?" It's doubtful that Samuel feels guilt over Mohinder's death, except as insofar as Captain Voiceover's brain probably contained the only cure for that which afflicted and eventually killed Samuel's brother, Joseph. If I have this right, Samuel needs Hiro to take him back to keep Mohinder alive so that Joseph may live. Which means more Mohinder is on the way. Plus more time travel. It's like a geeky, anti-Reese's Peanut Butter Cup.

It's hard for this volume of "Heroes" to get much momentum if it's constantly skipping around in time. The past few weeks actually built up a little bit of steam, but this episode just stopped the whole mess dead in its tracks. If, as Charlie said, 300,000 people die each day, why does Joseph's matter so much? Is Samuel simply selfish, wanting his brother back by his side? Hopefully not. It's one thing to humanize a villain by giving him a recognizable motivation. It's another to make his concerns so small that watching him tear down the world to achieve it seems the height of overcompensating.

In short, We're risking going from "Save the Cheerleader, Save the World," to "Save The Brother, Save the Carnival." Not exactly the most compelling rewriting of history.

Heroes - Episode 4-7 Review

If there was ever a “filler” episode of Heroes, this was it. However, “filler” is decidedly different from “stalling,” so I’ll chalk this up as the lesser of two evils. Normally episodes such as these are a necessary evil when it comes to properly pacing the season, however with such a large cast with so many stories going on, it’s admittedly a bit tough to defend.

I suppose if there was any “A” story, it was Sylar’s continued haunting of Parkman. I will admit that I found it somewhat funny that this entire time Parkman has been pretending to be a recovering addict, and then in the end alcohol ended up overcoming his proverbial demon. And, actually, I enjoyed the climatic reveal that Sylar had officially taken over Parkman’s body. However, I can’t help but be disappointed that they’ve really missed out on the fun dichotomy of Sylar’s consciousness living in Parkman’s body, and Nathan’s consciousness living in Sylar’s body. Instead, we’ve just got this massive overexposure of Sylar. He is just all over the place.

But man, did I ever cringe when Parkman called Mohinder.

I’ve repeatedly stated that Ali Larter is the weakest link of the Heroes cast. For whatever reason, they just can’t make any of her characters work in the series. But, as I’ve noted, I’ve really, really enjoyed this progressive bond between her and HRG (yeah, you heard me). After all, these are pretty much the only two characters who are expressing the “redemption” portion of this volume. They’ve been a pretty fun pair. And, for the most part, I still feel that way. However, this whole thing with Tracy getting drawn to the carnival is a tad too reminiscent of what we saw last season, with Tracy joining up with that volume’s lead antagonist, Papa Petrelli. As I’ve indicated with Sylar, we don’t need to see the same characters having the same struggle over and over again.

And that’s why I continue to dig HRG – he’s one of the few characters that legitimately seems to grow as a person. I buy that he wants to make up for his past mistakes, and I thought his performance this week was really strong. He genuinely wanted to help Jeremy, and you could really feel HRG’s pain when he discovered Jeremy’s body.

Not much to say about the Claire/Gretchen thing, except that four girls seems like an awfully small pledge class, doesn’t it? Seriously, though, I was a bit relieved we didn’t have to sit through Claire and Gretchen going through some super duper awkward phase where they avoid each other and pretend like nothing happened for a gabillion episodes. No, I don’t think Claire will end up being a lesbian, but I was glad she handled the situation with such straight forward maturity.

I’d hate to sound overly negative, but I’m having a lot of trouble getting into this whole carnival thing. Personally, I’m more interested in the redemption aspect of this season, instead of force feeding a plot point that will eventually bring the characters together. This is one of the cases where the build has been a bit too slow. We’re a few episodes in, and I feel like I have no real understanding of who these people are. Or their motivations, for that matter. They may be manipulative, but are they decidedly evil? And without that distinction, I don’t find myself particularly invested in who does and doesn’t decide to join them.

What I think we need is a “Company Man” type episode that focuses solely on the carnival crew. And we need that soon.

Meanwhile, Heroes continues to struggle on Monday nights. I don't know what it would take to move the show to a less competitive night, but at least the bleeding has slowed. Last night's overall numbers were only .03 less thna last week, and in the 18-49 demo, the numbers have not changed.

As a matter of fact, Trauma did better in Heroes old spot last night...though not by much.

It is appreant that Heroes is no longer working on Mondays at 8/7. Still it is one of NBC stronger performers, it can move to, say Tuesday or Friday nights and possibly do better. (I mean, do we REALLY need 2 hours of The Biggest Loser?)

Fast National ratings for Monday, Oct. 5, 2009.

The season is young, but a Monday pattern is emerging: "Dancing with the Stars" makes ABC nearly unbeatable overall, but FOX and CBS are happy to battle for demographic supremacy.
Among adults 18-49, FOX won the night with a 4.1 rating, just ahead of the 3.8 for CBS. ABC wasn't far behind with a 3.6 rating in the key demographic, leaving NBC in a distant fourth with a 1.8 rating. The CW's 1.0 rating trailed.

Overall, of course, ABC averaged an estimated 15.7 million viewers to go with a 10.1 rating/15 share. CBS was a solid second with a 7.2/11, with FOX's 6.2/9 close behind. NBC wasn't really all that competitive in fourth with a 3.3/5. The CW's 1.5/2 was fifth.

ABC dominated the night's first two hours, starting at 8 p.m. with a 11.4/17 for "Dancing with the Stars." FOX's "House" was second with a 7.6/11 and won the hour in the 18-49 demo with a 5.1/13. CBS' "How I Met Your Mother" and "Accidentally on Purpose" finished third, averaging a 5.1/8 between them. "Heroes" had a 3.3/5 overall and a 2.3/6 rating in the demo. The CW's "One Tree Hill" trailed with a 1.5/2 overall.

"Dancing with the Stars" held steady at 9 p.m. for CBS. Second place overall went to CBS' "Two and a Half Men" and "The Big Bang Theory," which averaged a 8.0/12 overall and barely won the hour with a 4.4 rating in the demo. Two struggling dramas -- FOX's "Lie to Me" and NBC's "Trauma" -- battled for third, with FOX's entry holding steady with a 4.7/7 and NBC's new drama slumping to a 3.6/5. The CW's "Gossip Girl," featuring guest appearances by Tyra Banks and Hilary Duff, didn't get much of a lift and was fifth with a 1.5/2.

CBS moved into first at 10 p.m. with a 8.5/14 for "CSI: Miami," which also did a 3.9 rating in the demo. ABC's "Castle" was second with a 7.5/12. Third place, as per usual, went to NBC's "The Jay Leno Show."

S4E5: Hysterical Blindness (NBC Promo)

This trailer is notable for a few reasons. For one, NBC's Voice-of-Doom Promo Guy is nowhere to be found on this. The other notable thing is coming up.

First we have Emma walking backwards into the path of a bus. Peter goes into Speedster mode and saves her and does the prerequisite "what-the-hell-are-you-doing" thing.

Is it me, or does Emma seem a bit too old for our Peter?

Well, Sylar is back from the dead....thanks ClaireBear....only now he's pretty much Gabriel...and in trouble. He's taken in and questioned.

Hell Ernie Hudson, welcome to party. Last time we saw you you were Ghostbuster #4. Hint...you should have brought along your backpack.

Any the BlackBuster get telekinesis'ed by 'Ol 'Sy. I feel there will be some serious double work for ZQ, for there is still Sylar-in-the-head for Matt.

Now think for a moment. ZQ and Grunny on a soundtage. Together. Same scene. DEAR GOD, THERE HAS TO BE A BLOOPER REEL!

Back at college, Claire meets her new nemesis, a pert, my-crap-don't-stink Black girl name Becky who juuuuust found out that Claire was a cheerleader. From who.....? Retchen Gretchen, course.

Which brings us to the OTHER notable thing about this trailer. It's really appearant, so I won't mention it.....except it should have happened last season. With another actress (think of the letter between K and M).

With that in mind, the you know what was the phoniest you-know-what between two women I've seen. Especially since we understand La Hayden is sort of a fan of you-know-what. Still, I am warning to Madeiline Zima's Gretch, and I pray that they don't turn her into Lisa Sheridan. I kinda like that vibe of Claire's Daphne to Gretch's Velma.

What is also intresting is the end shots of HRG, Sy, and what looks to be Nathan in flight.

S4E4: Acceptance (Recap)

The cliché, “Those that forget their past are doomed to repeat it,” got a solid work-out in a surprisingly solid episode of “Heroes” tonight. Then again, once one saw the phrase “Written by Bryan Fuller” come on-screen during the opening credits, many a fan’s eye lit up from their dull, habitual gaze and perked up for the first time since…well, since Fuller last wrote an episode.

Is Bryan Fuller the answer to not only quality television, but global warming, the Middle East conflict, and Nickelback’s reign of terror atop the Billboard charts? Unlikely, despite what many a critic might have you think. But he knows how to breathe life into the characters of “Heroes” that eludes the majority of the show’s writing staff. His scripts take stale characters and invigorate them to the point where you remember when you couldn’t wait to see the outcome of the previous cliffhanger. And tonight’s episode, “Acceptance,” featured one hell of a cliffhanger.

I’m taking what they’re giving/Cuz I’m working for a living

Tracy and Noah find themselves in the unfortunate place of being unemployed during these tough economic times. And yes, they do seem to exist in our world, courtesy of a quick mention of the economy on Claire’s behalf. A simple move to place the show’s world into ours, it was a nice touch to remind the audience of the show’s original conceit: a look at super powered people in our own world.

Both are simultaneously overqualified and underqualified. Noah mockingly calls himself a “company man” (a nice shout-out to the show’s best episode, the Fuller-penned “Company Man” in Season 1), but reminds a supportive Claire that his vast experience in Primatech Paper couldn’t land him a job at Dunder Mifflin. As for Tracy: she’s got brains, but all Governor Malden cares about is going upstairs and “mak[ing] each other happy.” Apparently, Governor Malden learned his pickup lines from Borat.

Both characters are driven by their professional ambition, but both realize that the professions they have inhabited no longer fulfill them. In fact, their previous jobs disgust them. I could have gone without Tracy’s life almost literally going down the drain during an emotional meltdown, but overall I bought the connection between these two much more than in the volume’s opening hours. Tracy and Noah hopefully will have new purpose going forth, a prospect that seemingly frightens Big Bad Samuel. Good. I remember when Noah wasn’t Noah, but HRG. HRG used to scared me. Happy to see if he can do it again.

(Also, kudos to “Heroes” for containing scenes involving Claire that didn’t make me want to bang my head against the wall repeatedly. That’s a super power in and of itself.)

If you fall I will catch you, I'll be waiting/Time after time

Oh, Hiro. Season 1’s audience on-screen conduit to the fantastical has devolved into fanboy punching bag over the years. Too many antics, too much grating behavior, and too many times where he violates common sense in order to give the show some sort of conflict. So what happens this week? He gets humanized, and I feel for the character for the first time in ages.

Now, I’m not a fan of Hiro’s sudden desire to micro-manage the past in order to achieve results on an individual level. (See: “violates common sense.”) But since the show’s already sent Hiro down Route Sixty-Suck, presenting the potential futility of this tactic was a fantastic way to insert humor into Hiro’s storyline without making him a pathetic clown. His constant attempts to prevent a fellow coworker (Tadashi) from self-destructing fail, leading to 47 timelines in which Tadashi manages to photocopy his posterior using company property.

For Hiro, the answers lie in the past. After all, if one redirected Slurpee yields love for Ando and Kimiko, why couldn’t other redirections yield beneficial results? However, Hiro’s “Groundhog Day”-esque quest only ends when he accepts Tadashi’s intrinsic nature, not habitually fighting it at different points in the past. He correctly diagnoses Tadashi’s fetish as a cry for new employment, a revelation that sends Hiro to the one place he’s avoided: Kimiko’s office to tell her of his terminal illness.

Props to “Heroes” for showing us the introduction to that reveal, but not the actual revelation itself. The scene played more powerfully through Ando’s eyes that it would have up close, a moment of rare restraint for a show that not only tells instead of shows, but usually uses giant blinking neon signs when telling. After Hiro’s confession, his eyes go blank and he disappears, leaving Ando to clue his wife-to-be onto the source of Hiro’s malady.

Nightswimming…deserves a quiet night

Let’s liken Hiro’s decision to subtly change the past despite having first-hand evidence at just how catastrophic that could be to, say, a beer. Using that as our base point, Angela’s decision to cage Sylar inside the mental and physical likeness of her deceased son Nathan is a keg. A big, frothy, stupid keg of stupidity. I fashion Fuller for a whiskey guy myself that looked at the crappy keg and decided to kill it before leaving the show for greener pastures in the land of development deals.

In order to reboot Sylar’s brain into more of a Nathan-centric perspective, she brings a box to his office containing mementos from Nathan’s childhood. Since his shapeshifting ability works based on absorbing memories from physical objects, the mementos do a nice job of shoving actual memories into Sylar’s brain. Unfortunately for all involved, one of those memories details a dead woman floating in a pool, surrounded by chlorine and blood.

Turns out that woman is the daughter of Angela’s friend Millie Houston, a character briefly seen last season during “Fugitives.” Awesome to see Swoozie Kurtz used for more than a bizarre five minute scene. While Angela used the Haitian to wipe the actual Nathan’s mind from this memory, the Sylar-as-Nathan felt compelled to rip open the scab of history through what Peter calls “psychometrics” to triangulate his own guilt, reaffirm Millie’s long-held suspicions, and land Sylar-as-Nathan stabbed, shot, and buried alive thanks to a hit ordered by Mama Houston. Well, you know what they say about no good deed…

…but wait! Not unlike the poor in “Monty Python and Holy Grail,” Sylar’s not dead yet! It was cool enough when a hand stuck up through the ground, but to see Sylar’s face appear next? Groovy. Not sure if this means the end of Adrian Pasdar on “Heroes” or not, but it was a fantastic reminder of just how insanely cool the cliffhangers for this show used to be. I’m not sure any of this makes a lick of sense, but for the first time in a while, I’m just anxious for the next episode. It’ll probably bring me back down to earth, but at least for one week, I’m happy I’ve stuck with this show for so long.

Possibly.

Well, lets just say that she could be available.

It all depends on what ABC does in the next few weeks.

TV By The Numbers crunched the figures on the first few weeks of the season. Now Stana Katic co-star on the romantic detective comedy Castle on ABC. Katic, as you know, also starred as Hana "Wireless" Gitleman, former Isreali soldier and mistress of all thing internet on Heroes.

Well, it don't look good for Stana. According to thier cancellation index, Castle may not make it to January.

Now we know that Hana "died" in an online graphic novel on www.nbc.com, but our little birdie says that a HUGE reset button may be thrown on Heroes before the Olympics.

So if Hana DOES come back, Stana Katic would be available.

Is Heroes Safe? Maybe

For the last few weeks, there has been a lot of talk about how to save Our Favorite Show.

Maybe we are panicking too soon.

TVBy The Numbers, which tracks primetime and ratings, has anylized NBC's scripted fare over the past few weeks. And despite falling numbers, TVByTN says that Heroes stands a good chance of surviving to 2011, along with The Office, SVU, and the new Chevy Chase comedy Community.

Not looking good is Mercy. And although it was not listed, Trauma may be in the crosshairs as well.

The two that look like sure cancellations are Ame Poehler's Parks and Rec and the original Law & Order, though out of respect for 20 years, NBC may allow it to stay on until May.

S4 E3 Ink (Episode and recap)

Sylar pushes Matt to his limit, a grieving Samuel ventures beyond the carnival in search of Peter, Claire resolves to be truthful, and a new hero discovers her unique ability.

Last week I praised the arrival of Peter Petrelli: Working Class Hero. This week I bemoan the return of Peter Petrelli: Pretty Boy Tool. Seems like Samuel has a particular interest in Peter due to his own brother being an empath himself. At least, that's the impression I got after watching that subdermal compass go all a flutter an episode's end.

It's clear Samuel just doesn't let any ol' superpowered person into his fold. Instead, they have to pass what amounts to a moral test in order to be deemed worthy of inclusion. One man's morality is another man's depravity, so all things are relative. But Samuel, like all villains worth giving a damn about, doesn't actually consider himself a villain. Until recently, that might have even approximated the truth from an objective perspective. But it's clear that Joseph's death has sent him over the edge upon which he danced for so long.

So Samuel establishes a false lawsuit against Peter, stores up some specially made Sullivan Brothers Psychic Ink, and goes to work on Peter's mind. Then again, Samuel didn't have to manually Photoshop himself into one of Peter's pinned-up articles in order to make Peter doubt his own brain. I'm sure a Sudoku would have broken him just as easily. In any case, Peter apologizes to Samuel, unaware that the apology is itself "proof" for Samuel that he's found a suitable heir for his brother's ability.

Before heading back to the circus, Samuel makes a quick visit back to the home in which he grew up. Turns out he and Joseph lived in a carriage house, the offspring of a wealthy family's hired help. When denied entrance to his old home by the current tenant, he does the sensible thing and sinks the freakin' house. In case you didn't get it, this was the "Our Villain's Only a Villain Because People Didn't Love Him Enough as a Child" move they pulled on Sylar last year. And we all know how awesome THAT worked out.

As for the compass itself: it's unclear what it actually points towards, nor why empaths in particular are appropriate vessels for it. The show already has Lydia as its human version of Cerebro, so I'm unclear what added value is gained by the compass itself. My initial guess is that while Samuel creates ink out of earthen materials he can manipulate, there's something about an empath's power that focuses it and makes it usable for a specific purpose. Does the compass point to a place? A person? A cohesive plotline that won't have me banging my head against the wall by mid-volume? I'll let you, gentle reader, weigh in below.

Two-time touch and broken bones/Mirror in the bathroom

I can't even tell you how sick I am of the on-again, off-again relationship between Noah and Claire Bennet. It's this show's version of Ross and Rachel, but with much less making out. There's no earthly reason these two should re-hash the same talking points over and over again. And yet, on a seasonal basis, these two come together and split apart for the sole purpose of once again placing Claire in a position of danger.

Essentially, we're supposed to swallow that one game of "Guitar Hero" means Claire can call Gretchen her BFF. Well, my wife and I own "Rock Band." We play it all the time. And she doesn't even know as much about me as Gretchen now knows about Claire. We're literally weeks removed from the end of a plot in which superpowered people were sent to internment camps, and we're supposed to be OK with Claire revealing herself to someone who is essentially a stranger?

If you've seen this story before, and trust me, you have, then you know Noah's whole "I trust you" speech is a big fat lie. Unfortunately, 1) this makes us not like Noah, who is lying to his daughter, and 2) not like Claire, because we understand that Claire's judgement cannot be trusted. And meanwhile, it's only a matter of time before Gretchen's posting her own YouTube videos of her new roomie healing after cutting herself in the shower. I'm sooo looking forward to more "Single White Superhero," trust me.

Church of the poison mind/I think I'm paranoid
OK, let me just say that all my Evil Parkman dreams started to come true tonight. While I'm preparing myself to be disappointed in the eventual outcome, and wish the show focused more on Samuel as this Season's Big Bad without diluting the evil pool with Sylar's continued presence, I really enjoyed everything inside that dilapidated house.

When deployed properly, the ability to alter a person's mind is perhaps the most potent (and terrifying) power of all. You can argue until you're blue in the face that Sylar is actually the Sylar we know or just a byproduct of Parkman's guilty conscience, but you can't deny there was a realness to the cold look in that dead girl's eyes under the stairs. The fact that she was only a delusion should have taken away the power of the scene, but instead only validated the depths to which Parkman's mind can sink. This was one fake out that "Heroes" did deliciously.

The only problem with this storyline? I'm worried about its connection back to the carnival plot. Sure, we saw Sylar's face on Lydia's back next week. Does that mean that a psychic inside the carnival is working his/her mojo on Parkman in order to break Sylar-as-Nathan free? Seems like a complicated way to go about that change. Easier to just mind-frak the faux Senator back to life (back to reality), right?

Parkman's dark side is a fantastic little story, but only ultimately works if it ties into the volume as a whole, not as a stand-alone piece. The show may just be taking its time in allowing Samuel to gradually recruit all existing heroes one by one, but it needs to assure us that each piece of the seemingly disparate puzzle indeed connects. Moreover, it needs to explain sooner, not later, exactly why Samuel needs so many new members in his faction.

Ultraviolet (light my way)/Good vibrations

A possible way to tie everything together into one melodic whole? Emma, the show's first deaf superpowered character. Say what you will about the show's quality, but you can never fault their diversity in casting and in character. She's just developing her powers, which seem to manifest themselves in the realm of sound vibrations and the electromagnetic spectrum. Maybe these powers will develop into something cool, but for now they resemble something akin to an iPod commercial.

However, her ability to intuitively play the cello might also play a part in countering the effects of Peter's compass. I'm probably reading waaaay too much into this, but in Emma's ability to emit a sort of siren call with her music, I got a strong Mother Abigail vibe from her. The compass can't draw people in; it can only point to their direction. Samuel has to go TO those he wishes to find. It's possible that Emma will be the end of the rainbow for the side of good as the battle lines are drawn in "Redemption."

Or, you know, she'll get a job working Disney's Electric Light Parade. With "Heroes," nothing is ever truly out of the realm of possibility. Even if we desperately wished it could be.

Remember when back-to-back episodes would have been something to get excited about? Yeah, me neither. Anyway, Claire sees her roommate dead on the ground and insists that it is murder, not suicide. Her strange new friend Gretchen, who has an unhealthy obsession with dead bodies, says that they should try the age old Jump, Push, Fall test to determine the real cause of death, if only they could find a cadaver. Claire naturally leaps from the window herself, and new pal Gretchen sees her ribs sticking out and whatnot and is notably wigged out.

HRG gets a call from Tracy, who swears she didn't kill Danko. Instead, HRG determines that speedy knife guy must have wanted something, and after some digging in Danko's guts, HRG pulls out a key. The key leads to a safety deposit box, and HRG enlists a reluctant Peter's help to get it. Peter's the muscle in this scenario. Go ahead, laugh. I'll wait. Done? Nope? Yeah, it's a pretty hysterical concept. Anyway, they eventually find the box, containing a broken compass, and then speedy knife guy shows up and tries to kill them. Peter steals his power and they battle all blurry for a while, while HRG stands to the side and does literally nothing. Then knife guy runs off. The compass works for Peter, so HRG asks Peter to be his partner, but Peter turns him the hell down. Later, Peter gets called in for an emergency and it's a sliced up HRG who just got his little compass stolen. Then Tracy weirdly goes to the hospital and now she's friends with HRG or something and it is just strange.

Also strange, Hiro accidentally sends himself back to the carnival, but doesn't stop his young self from going to get his fortune told. However, T-Bag (also known as Samuel, apparently) encourages him to make another small change that won't rip the fabric of time apart or anything. Except that it sort of does as Ando and Komiko are dating now. Hiro sees this as a good thing (because even though he's not a pre-teen any more, he's still an idiot) and decides to go back to undo everything he's done wrong in the past. Well, that should take a long, long, while.

Meanwhile, in the storyline I just can't stand, Matt Parkman is hallucinating Sylar, who is looking for his body. Matt tries to ignore him, as he's apparently gone power-free for six weeks and isn't looking to get addicted again. There's group therapy, an annoying interrogation scene where Matt tries to do whatever job he's got this week, and then way too much of Matt's wife, who is having an affair with the water delivery boy. Matt finally caves and uses his power to send water boy away, and Sylar is delighted because now Matt will help him... in theory. Also, Nathan is having weird facial ticks, which is gross and apparently just there so that we realize the internal conflict going on inside him. Subtle.

Aside from taking advantage of stupid Hiro, who is apparently on tap to replace the ailing old time-traveling guy, T-Bag and crew need to take up a collection of heroes for some sort of mission. The tattoo seems to be of Peter, Sylar and Claire... for whatever unknown and presumably nefarious reason.

I won't bore you with the details, but it doesn't look good for our Heroes...

...NBC limped out of the gate on the first night of the new season with its combination of the two-hour fourth season-premiere of tired Heroes (3.4/ 5 from 8-10 p.m.) and week two of The Jay Leno Show (#3: 4.4/ 7 at 10 p.m.). Comparably, Heroes dipped by 11 percent from its 9-10 p.m. overnight average (3.8/ 6) from last March and April.

S3E24: An Invisible Thread (Season Finale)

+ Recap of last few episodes and key points of all the incidents that occurred to each character.
+ A short Mohinder soliloquoy occurs as we see Matt on a bus riding to Washington D.C., Hiro and Ando outside of Building 26, and Angela, Claire, and Mr. Bennet in a car driving.
+ Mr. Bennet figures out that the Agents know where they are as he drops Claire and Angela off and tell them to find Nathan.
+ Mr. Bennet gives Claire a phone and drives off.
+ Mr. Bennet arrives at a checkpoint as a truck filled with agnts arrive behind him and surround the car.
+ The same ending scene of last week's episode where Sylar is stabbed in the head by Danko replays over again.
+ Sylar is getting up like he did in the last episode and pulls out the knife from the back of his head as he tells Danko that its because of his shapeshifting ability he was able to survive.

+ Angela tells Claire to go find Nathan as she tells her that she needs to find Matt Parkman in order to save Nathan from harm.
+ Sylar is dressing up in a suit as he tries to wake Nathan up in the bathroom in order to get information about his past.
+ Nathan's secretary walks in as Sylar is turned around and tells him that his daughter is there to see him.
+ Sylar tells Claire that he is planning on stopping 'Sylar' from meeting the president
+ Claire questions Sylar if he really is Nathan and through the use of his powers figures out a way to convince Claire that he is Nathan.
+ Nathan and Claire are already on their way to meet the president.
+ Danko is being transported as Hiro and Ando are outside discussing a way to get inside.
+ They start arguing over Hiro's power and the effects its having on his body.
+ Danko is being transported down the hall as everyone sees him and stares at him, he gets throuwn into a room with a single table and Mr. Bennet standing around.
+ Mr. Bennet says, "Fancy meeting you here."

COMMERCIAL BREAK!!

+ Nathan wakes up in the bathroom as Peter finds him knocked out in the bathroom and tells Peter that they need to stop Sylar.
+ Mr. Bennet and Danko are discussing Sylar and the fact that they can't kill Sylar anymore because he moved the spot and how they got there.
+ Mr. Bennet tells Danko that he would have became exactly like Danko if he didn't have Claire and that they need to do something to escape.
+ As they are about to shake hands, Hiro and Ando freeze time and appear.
+ Ando finds pictures of themselves and takes them off a wall.
+ Hiro's ears are bleeding as Ando notices that Hiro is straining himself.
+ Hiro says "Holy Crap" as they find everyone in the containment center drugged.
+ They grab all the agents and replace them with all the people who have powers.
+ Mr. Bennet figures out that Hiro must have stopped time because the door is open and that there are no guards.
+ Mohinder is checking Hiro out and figures out that his powers are having an adverse affect on his body and that he can't use his powers anymore.
+ Nathan meets with a colleague as Claire starts picking up on all these hints that Nathan isn't who he really is.
+ Danko is about to betray Nathan and stab him with a tranquilizer as Hiro freeze time and uses it on Danko.
+ Hiro collapses as Mr. Bennet runs off to meet with Nathan.
+ Mr. Bennet calls Claire as it becomes obvious that Sylar is now impersonating Claire and tells Mr. Bennet that he is Sylar.

COMMERCIAL BREAK!!

+ Sylar is controlling Claire to open a bottle of wine and makes her move slowly towards Sylar and controls her every movement to serve wine.
+ Sylar is telling Claire that they have a lot in common as he makes her drink wine.
+ Claire tells Sylar that she would continue to hunt down Sylar continuously as Sylar starts telling Claire that they may eventually fall in love with each other.
+ Peter and Nathan arrive at the hotel and Nathan tells his colleague that Sylar is the one upstairs and shows him his power.
+ As Peter and Nathan enter the suite, Claire is thrown through the doorway as Nathan and Peter fly in to confront him.
+ Claire watches him from the hallway as Nathan and Sylar flew out the window and Peter and Claire run off to confront Sylar.
+ Nathan gets thrown through the window and Sylar cuts his throat as he says, "Claire will be so mad at me."
+ Sylar transforms into Nathan and walks off, leaving Nathan dead in a chair.

COMMERCIAL BREAK!!

+ Angela finds Matt Parkman and tells him that he has to come with her to find Nathan and save him.
+ Mr. Bennet arrives and finds Claire and Peter as the agents stop them as they warn them that the president is in danger.
+ Matt and Angela arrive at the hotel and finds out that Nathan died and Angela starts questioning her dreams.
+ Sylar arrives in the basement as Nathan and takes over a body of Nathan's colleague and starts going after the president.
+ Sylar gets in the car with the president and shakes his hand as Sylar figures out something is wrong and gets stabbed by Peter with a tranquilizer through the bottom of his neck.
+ Sylar is knocked out as Peter lays back and says, "I bet you never thought that I took that one from you."

COMMERCIAL BREAK!!

+ Mr. Bennet lays Sylar on a couch as Mr. Bennet and Angela is trying to convince Matt to mind control Sylar into becoming Nathan and telling the president that everything that occurred was a mistake.
+ Matt digs into Sylar's brain and tells him that he is now Nathan Petrelli and that Gabriel Gray is now dead.
+ Sylar transforms into Nathan and looks at Mrs. Petrelli and goes, "Ma?"
+ We see Nathan standing over Sylar's body and burning it as Sylar/Nathan stands by Angela.
+ Mr. Bennet asks Sylar/Nathan if he convinced the President to solve the problems, and Mr. Bennet says that he likes the name the "company."
+ Mr. Bennet tells Claire that Sylar is really dead as Matt Parkman walks away angry at himself for what he did.
+ Peter is standing there looking at Sylar/Nathan through the fire as Mohinder's soliloquouy ends.

END OF VOLUME 4!!

Beginning of Volume 5...
+ We see Water escaping from a kitchen as it flows into the living room and reanimates itself into Tracy and kills someone.
+ Nathan is sitting in his desk as he finishes looking at a newspaper mentions the murder and Angela walks in and tells Nathan that its time for lunch.
+ Nathan looks at the clock and figures that its running a little late as Angela feels a little uncomfortable with herself as she knows that Sylar will eventually come back.

S2E24: I Am Sylar (Recap and Full Episode)

Ah, self-discovery. This episode of Heroes finds several characters pondering who they are and what their next move should be. Sylar shape-shifts himself into a ball of emotional mess which he longer identifies with, Hiro finally accepts that two heads are better than one on his path of heroic destiny, and Parkman decides being a part of his son's life is about more than changing diapers. Plus, Nathan tries his best to stop the program he initiated and Sylar does his best Norman Bates! Huh, you ask? Read on for the details.

Two of a kind
After delivering baby Matt Parkman to his father, Hiro and Ando plead with Parkman Sr. to take them to Building 26 to take down Danko and his men. But Parkman's priorities have changed, and his "game changer" baby boy makes him realize he doesn't need two dead heroes on his conscience. So, Hiro and Ando (henceforth to be known as Crimson Arc) set out on their own to find Building 26. Unfortunately for the "dangerous but ladylike" Crimson Arc, Hiro still wants to use Ando as bait. They have the same argument they've had about 100 times this season, ultimately ending with Ando comparing Hiro to Superman...because he's a fascist. Ouch.

Ando gets a slight upper hand, however, when Danko's men storm in, forcing Hiro to freeze time. But because Hiro was touching Ando when he stopped the action around him, Ando is free to move and manipulate time as well. Hiro plays along like he's happy, but ultimately, sets things in motion long enough to have the tranquilizers take Ando down. Hiro has his bait, and after outfitting himself as one of Danko's men, he thinks he has his way back to Building 26. (Having a little heart, Hiro turns Ando's dope machine off, instructing him to play possum until they get inside.) Too bad that Hiro forgot that the guy he was pretending to be doesn't wear glasses. When they become suspicious, Ando has to take action, unleashing the Crimson Arc's justice on all Danko's men to keep them from Tasing his pal.

With that, Hiro decides he and Ando should indeed be partners. They take the GPS off one of the incapacitated agents, and find their way to Building 26, but just as Hiro gets set to stop time and scope out the scene he is stricken with a terrible headache and a nosebleed. (Shades of Lost, anyone?) How will Crimson Arc solve this one?

Father knows best
Parkman heads back west to return his son to his ex-wife, Janice. Once there, he senses Danko's agents nearby, and Janice makes a plan to head off to a lake house with the baby. And before she even knows what she's done, she invites Matt, which he is thrilled by. But as they ready to leave, Parkman sees his old police badge and has a change of heart. He tells Janice that he must go back and stop Building 26, or else they will never have a life together. He isn't sure what their life is, but he wants to fight for the chance to find out again. Of course, he has to keep the handful agents who've surrounded them in the house at bay first. For now, he has them under mind control, so stay tuned.

A boy's best friend is his mother
Yes, all the other action of tonight's episode was all just a mild diversion from the Sylar show. (The episode was named for him, after all.) We learn through the episode just how (and why) Sylar came to be impersonating Nathan on national TV, and it all starts with a case of shape-shifter identity crisis. While living as Agent Taub, Sylar finds himself unable to control the restructuring of DNA that makes his shifting possible. Side effects include extra teeth, an errant blue eye and apparently a penchant for self-mutilation (at least for the sake of this episode's title screen). Sylar gives his sob story to Danko, who could care less. Danko also warns Sylar that if he can't continue to live as Agent Taub, he will hunt him down like the rest. Luckily, Danko — he of eight different lives, wives and languages in recent years — tells Sylar he needs an anchor (or Lost fans might say a constant?) to remind him who he is no matter how many shifts he goes through.

Sylar's anchor becomes his (believed) mother Virginia Gray, who he murdered back in Season 1. He finds a box of evidence from her unsolved murder and takes to shifting back and forth between the personalities, even carrying on a conversation. (Hitchcock would be so proud.) Turns out, Sylar pinpoints the moment that he killed his "mother" as when he became lost, having eliminated the only person to have ever loved him. But by bringing her back, he is able to again convince himself that he can be and do anything. Even be president.

That notion was also helped along by Micah aka Rebel. Danko learns from a man's body in Virginia (a one-man wrecking machine who Sylar killed and took his powers of disintegration before the agents arrived) that Rebel is still in the D.C. area. They track him to a warehouse and kill the power, erasing his ability to use machines to his advantage. Sylar finds Micah first, and Rebel appeals to Sylar to come back and help his people, those with abilities. He apparently smooth talked him, because before you know it, Sylar-as-Micah leads Danko's men to a pier where they shoot him. The real Micah looks upset as he watches his doppelganger fall into the water, but I'm sure he's happy to live to rebel another day. Danko isn't convinced Micah's dead, but a re-shifted Sylar convinces Danko that Micah isn't a healer. "Dead is dead," he says. (Are we sure we're not watching Lost?)

When Micah sees a late-night chat between Sylar and Virgina while crashing on Sylar's couch, he compares Sylar to his mother. Micah says his mother became someone else on the inside in order to help people, and tells Sylar he could do the same on the outside. He suggests he become Nathan Petrelli and shut down this hunting operation. Sylar suddenly wants nothing to do with Micah and kicks him out, warning him that he will kill him if their paths cross again. But, of course, Sylar does pose as Nathan, though it seems his only goal is to get close enough to the president to fulfill his dead "mother's" dream of seeing her boy rule the country. "I won't let you down, Ma," Sylar says.

Nathan leaves his family at the restaurant to stop Sylar from getting to the President, and refuses Peter's help, choosing to end it on his own. Back in his office, Nathan stares in the mirror of Sylar and gets a lesson in his own self-loathing, brought to him by a guy who only recently decided his life was worth living. But before Sylar can crack Nathan's skull, Danko takes the senator down with some tranquilizers. Danko tells Sylar to get back into his Agent Taub costume to help them bring in the remaining big guns (Mohinder, HRG, Claire, Peter, etc.) they got from Micah's things at the warehouse. When Sylar refuses, Danko puts a knife in the back of Sylar's head. But while that used to be the magic act to stop the energizer bunny from beating his drum, (gasp!) Sylar isn't dead. "That hurt," Sylar says with a deadly smirk. To be continued...

+ The Hunter is catching up to the guy and starts shooting him as the guy is running away from them while trying to shapeshift.
+ The guy manages to escape into a crowd as the Hunter, will not be referred to as Danko because it’s easier to type, loses track of him.
+ Angela is telling Peter that she wished she was more supportive of Peter emotionally.
+ Peter tells Angela that he doesn’t hate her.
+ Nathan is trying to gain money by constantly making hit after hit with some college kids.
+ Claire tries to stop them as Nathan passes out and Claire tries to get their money back.
+ She takes off her shirt and asks him for a rematch as she starts drinking to catch up to his 22 shots.
+ Danko finds Sylar in his room as Sylar again offers his help to catch everyone with abilities.
+ Danko pulls his gun away from Sylar.
+ Angela is praying in church as Peter starts praying and asking why is everyone running for their lives when he tried to do his best to protect people.
+ Peter tells Jesus/God that they had a deal and he promised to do his best to change the world.
+ Peter sees the candles blow out as agents walk into the church and he hides Angela and himself in the confessional booths.

COMMERCIAL BREAK!!

+ Sylar is searching the shapeshifter’s house and finding out all about him while trying to tell Danko on how to search for him.
+ They find a bar that the shapeshifter will be at.
+ Claire is not at all drunk and wins her money back.
+ Angela is telling Peter that she used to be just like him because she wanted to save the world but cost her everything.
+ Mr. Bennet finds them and tells his soldiers that it’s all clear.
+ Danko and Sylar arrive at a club and start searching as Sylar find the shapeshifter disguised as Danko.

+ Danko is about to go chase after the shapeshifter but Sylar stops him.
+ The shapeshifter spots them and leaves.
+ Claire is telling Nathan not to fly drunk again and asks about how she is not drunk.
+ Claire starts helping Nathan get undressed and ready to sleep.
+ Nathan is telling Claire that he wanted to help raise her and spend time with her and the reason why he gave her a free pass was because he wanted to win her over.
+ Nathan tells her that he wanted to fix everything as he passes out.
+ Claire tucks him in.
+ Danko and Sylar trap the shapeshifter as Danko shoots the shapeshifter who disguised himself as Sylar.
+ Sylar asks Sylar if he can take the shapeshifter’s power without having to cut his head open and Sylar smiles and starts doing so.

+ Nathan tells Claire that he screwed up and he doesn’t know what he can do to fix it.
+ Claire is telling Nathan that when she first met Nathan he was the most amazing person to her and that Nathan was her “Superman.”
+ Claire leaves as he sits quietly by himself in the room.
+ Angela wakes up in the morning and tells Peter that she knows what they need to do now.
+ They have to find Nathan and Claire and then go find Angela’s sister.
+ Claire and Nathan are at a bus stop as Nathan tells Claire that he’s heading back up and asks Claire is she’s coming with him.
+ The Hunter shows Mr. Bennet the dead body of the shapeshifter still disguised as Sylar.
+ Angela and Claire leave the church as they leave in a fashion similar to how Claire and Nathan left.
+ Sylar enters a car with Danko and they discuss how Sylar felt zipping up the body bag and how he’d feel being the only one with abilities left.

+ Sylar tells his father that he is his son and tells him that he has questions to ask him.
+ Sylar tells him that he is going to kill him and his father reveals that if he doesn't kill him then his cancer will.
+ Nathan and the Hunter are arguing about what the Hunter did to Matt.
+ Nathan tells the Hunter that he is removed from command and the Hunter replies that he works directly for the president.
+ Nathan asks to talk to Mr. Bennet about something as the Hunter brings up proof that the case may be compromised from the start.

COMMERCIAL BREAK!!

+ They are transferring Tracy as she is being escorted down a hallway and sees one of the computer screens say "Help is coming. Have hope."
+ Nathan and Bennet are arguing about what is going on and Nathan's actions.
+ Nathan enters Tracy's room and starts telling her that he is her last hope and that he has been helping everyone out.
+ The Hunter enters the room to start interrogating Tracy.
+ The Hunter is interrogating Tracy as Nathan is watching through the monitors.
+ When the Hunter asks Tracy if Nathan has an ability she replies "No."
+ Claire and her Mom are arguing about Claire's need to help people because she has a free pass.
+ Claire tells her mom that she wants to work at the comic book store in order for Hunter to send people to her there rather than to their house.
+ Claire is getting interviewed in the comic book store as the guy is asking her questions about comics.
+ Claire is about to leave as she is getting stressed about the questions he is asking and the guy tells her that she has the job because all the guys are staring at her.
+ Sylar's father comes back inside to find that Sylar is still inside.
+ Sylar's father is telling him that he has the same power as Sylar and that they are essentially the same. As he talks about their need to kill "easy prey" as he offers Sylar a knife to kill him with but instead Sylar kills a bunny that his father was about to taxidermy because he wants more answers.

COMMERCIAL BREAK!!

+ The Hunter is analyzing a video of Peter falling off the building as the Hunter is asking Bennet about what information is missing about the Petrelli family.
+ Bennet tells Mrs. Petrelli about what is occurring and that the Hunter is after her.
+ Claire leaves the store and receives a text from Rebel to help Doyle because she is found out.
+ Doyle captures one of the agents as Claire incapacitates the other.
+ The Hunter is talking to Mrs. Petrelli about powers and if Nathan has one, as the Hunter is trying to intimidate her.
+ Mrs. Petrelli reveals information about the Hunter as he leaves and his expendability.
+ Sylar is still talking to his father about his ability and that everyone needs something to do. as Sylar puts a rabbit away as his father stabs Sylar with arrows.
+ Sylar's father wants his power as he uses his power that seems to put Sylar to sleep.

COMMERCIAL BREAK!!

+ Sylar is stabbed to the wall as his dad is trying to cut Sylar open as he finds out that his father did not want to kill because he was growing old.
+ Sylar releases himself from his father's grasp and told him that he found all the answers he needs.
+ Sylar tells his father that he'll die a slow and painful death.
+ Nathan releases the Hunter from his control because he went through the president and tells Bennet that the president wants to talk to him.
+ The Hunter shoots the window and pushes him out of the window as he flies away.
+ The Hunter turns to Bennet and asked if he knew.

+ Doyle is sitting in a park as Claire gives Doyle the information needed to start a new life.
+ Claire tells him that she did this to find out who she is and what she needs to do.
+ Hiro and Ando arrive in California as they find Matt Parkman, Matt's kid.
+ Claire is lying down on the bed as she looks on her cell to find out that her "free pass is up"
+ Sylar is in the Hunter's house as he sees the bunny.

Ratings Battle of the Jerks: Jason Beats Nathan.....and everyone else

For once, ABC wasn’t exaggerating when it dubbed last night’s final rose ceremony the most unbelievable “Bachelor” finale yet. And the audience seemed to agree.

“The Bachelor’s” two-hour season-ender and one-hour post-finale wrap-up show, “After the Final Rose,” combined to give ABC a dominant 5.8 adults 18-49 rating and 14 share for the night, according to Nielsen overnights, well ahead of No. 2 CBS at 4.1/10.

“Bachelor” averaged a season-high 5.4 for the finale from 8 to 10 p.m., the show's best finale rating since 2004. In it, bachelor Jason chose Melissa over Molly and even proposed to her in the waning minutes.

But that engagement was shortlived. In the follow-up “Rose” special, in which cast members gathered for a postmortem, Jason shockingly revealed that he was no longer in love with Melissa.

Instead, he’d been pining for runner-up Molly for weeks. Jason dumped Melissa on camera and then asked Molly to give the relationship another try, to which she agreed.

It made for great TV for ABC, which jumped to an all-time high 6.7 for "Rose," but perhaps not-so-great publicity for Jason. One TV critic has already dubbed him “The Bastard.”

As a reminder, all ratings are based on live-plus-same-day DVR playback. Seven-day DVR data won’t be available for several weeks. Twenty-eight percent of Nielsen households have DVRs.

With ABC and CBS well ahead of the competition for the night, Fox snagged third at 3.3/8, NBC followed in fourth at 2.7/6, Univision fifth at 1.6/4 and CW sixth at 0.5/1.

At 8 p.m. ABC was first with a 4.9 for the first hour of “Bachelor,” with CBS second with a 4.1 for “The Big Bang Theory” (3.9) and “How I Met Your Mother” (4.2). Fox was third with a 3.1 for its first hour of “24,” NBC fourth with a 2.4 for “Chuck,” Univision fifth with a 1.8 for “Cuidado con el Angel” and CW sixth with a 0.5 for a “Gossip Girl” rerun.

ABC was first again at 9 p.m. with a 5.9 for more “Bachelor,” while CBS remained second with a 4.4 for “Two and a Half Men” (4.9) and the season premiere of “Rules of Engagement” (3.9). Fox was third with a 3.5 for another hour of “24,” NBC fourth with a 3.2 for “Heroes,” [Positive: Improving on "Chuck's" Numbers] Univision fifth with a 2.0 for “Mañana Es para Siempre” and CW sixth with a 0.5 for a repeat of “One Tree Hill.”

At 10 p.m. ABC led once again with a 6.7 for “The Bachelor: After the Final Rose,” followed by CBS with a 3.8 for “CSI: Miami.” NBC was third with a 2.4 for “Medium” and Univision fourth with a 1.1 for “Cristina.”

ABC also led the night among households with a 10.6 average overnight rating and a 16 share. CBS was second at 7.8/12, Fox third at 6.5/9, NBC fourth at 4.4/7, Univision fifth at 2.0/3 and CW sixth at 0.8/1.

+ The Hunter tries to go and get them, but is stopped by two guards mind controlled as Mr. Bennet tells him that is probably a bad idea.

+ A flashback occurs with Sylar and his father in the hot dog store in 1980.
+ Little Sylar enters a shop and playing with a toy car as his father is talking to someone and Sylar drops his car as his father comes to pick him up.
+ Sylar finds his toy car that he dropped.

+ Claire checks up on Alex as he is in the shower.
+ Alex and Claire are discussing Claire's actions in saving Alex and that they could of had a relationship if it was under different circumstances.

+ The agent asks Claire again where Alex is because they couldn't find him.
+ Alex is planning on escaping as Claire's mom comes up with another plan.

+ Matt and Peter finish copying the files as they try to escape.
+ Matt is then captured as he controls some guards to hold them off as Peter escapes.

+ The flashback continues as Sylar's father is given money to someone and leaves Sylar there as he is sold to his uncle and aunt.

+ Someone flies up and escapes, possibly Nathan holding Peter.

+ The Hunter is strapping Matt up with bombs and the Hunter injects Matt with something, he is dropped off with bombs strapped to him as he stands in the middle of Washington D.C. and collapses
+ Claire is in her house as she tells Claire's mom that she is thankful for what she has done.
+ The puppet master appears and asks help from Claire.

With CBS again in reruns and NBC’s relaunched Monday lineup continuing to slide, Fox captured an easy victory last night, led by the evening’s top-rated show, “House.”

Fox averaged a 4.6 adults 18-49 rating and 12 share for the night, according to Nielsen overnights, a full point ahead of second-place ABC at 3.6/9.

“House” was up 6 percent from last week, when it faced an original “The Bachelor” at 8 p.m., from a 5.1 to a 5.4. Last night ABC aired a special, “The Bachelor: The Women Tell All,” instead of the usual reality show, which has been surging in recent weeks.

“House” lead-out “24” was also up slightly from last week, from a 3.6 to a 3.7, though it finished 0.3 behind “Women” in the 9 p.m. timeslot.

NBC, meanwhile, saw its lineup slip again after a decent premiere several weeks ago. The network was down 0.2 from last week, tying for third place on the night with CBS at 2.7/7, as “Heroes” hit a likely series-low 3.3 rating, down 8 percent from last week’s 3.6.

As a reminder, all ratings are based on live-plus-same-day DVR playback. Seven-day DVR data won’t be available for several weeks. Twenty-eight percent of Nielsen households have DVRs.

Rounding out the top six for the night, Univision finished fifth at 1.7/4 and the rerun-laden CW sixth at 0.5/1.

At 8 p.m. Fox was first with a 5.4 for “House,” followed by ABC with a 3.4 for “Women.” CBS was third with a 2.7 for repeats of “The Big Bang Theory” and “How I Met Your Mother,” NBC fourth with a 2.2 for “Chuck,” Univision fifth with a 1.8 for “Cuidado con el Angel” and CW sixth with a 0.4 for a repeat of “Gossip Girl.”

ABC took the lead at 9 p.m. with a 4.0 for the second half of its “Bachelor” special, while Fox slipped to second with a 3.7 for “24.” NBC was third with a 3.3 for “Heroes,” CBS fourth with a 3.1 for repeats of “Two and a Half Men” and “The New Adventures of Old Christine,” Univision fifth with a 1.8 for the series premiere of “Mañana Es Para Siempre” and CW sixth with a 0.5 for a “One Tree Hill” rerun.

At 10 p.m. ABC was first with a 3.2 for “True Beauty,” with NBC second with a 2.7 for “Medium.” CBS was third with a 2.3 for a repeat of “CSI: Miami” and Univision fourth with a 1.4 for “Cristina.”

+ HRG is doing a crossword puzzle as he is talking to his wife about how they are going to go to Lyle's school for a PTA meeting.
+ There is a knock on the door as Nathan is standing outside asking to talk to him about something, when Claire is not there.
+ Nathan is telling HRG that Claire is going to be safe and that he set things in motion.
+ They discuss about the choices Nathan is making to protect everyone and that everyone will view Nathan as a villain.
+ HRG and Nathan are discussing about how HRG knows how to track people with abilities.
+ They enter a warehouse as HRG opens a case filled with guns.
+ HRG tells Nathan that he needs to do this.
+ Matt and Mohinder start arguing about what is going on and how Nathan is the fault for this.
+ HRG wakes up as they are arguing and they don't notice.
+ Matt gives Peter the location of the warehouse and the combination to the case of guns that he saw in HRG's mind.
+ There is a camera in the warehouse as they see Peter.

COMMERCIAL BREAK!!

+ Nathan and the Commander are discussing about how Peter needs to be caught even though Peter is in a room filled with guns.
+ They are outside as they open the door, Peter throws a flash grenade and flies out.
+ HRG is telling to Mohinder and Matt to leave and release him.
+ Matt forces his way back into HRG's head to find out who he has been working with.
+ HRG is trying to convince the Commander that he has been working with people with abilities and that some of them are good.
+ The Commander tells him that it's "us vs. them."
+ HRG enters a cab with Mohinder and asks him to help HRG out in saving lives.
+ HRG and Mohinder are arguing about what Mohinder knew and that Mohinder could of saved everyone's life and prevented Daphne from dying.
+ Mohinder looks over to HRG and sees that he escaped.

COMMERCIAL BREAK!!

+ Matt and Mohinder leave to find HRG as they look for where he could have gone.
+ Peter lands on the hood of a car that HRG tried to steal.
+ They retie HRG back in a chair as Matt starts reading his mind again.
+ HRG knocks on an apartment door as the Commander opens it.
+ HRG is trying to get to know the Commander to see where they both come from.
+ The Commander is telling HRG that he needs to focus on capturing people with abilities.
+ HRG is telling the Commander that to capture people with abilities that they need to understand people and not view them as targets.
+ Matt writes down the address of the Commander's apartment and gives it to Peter.
+ Peter grabs a gun and leaves as he flies off while HRG was trying to convince him not to go.

COMMERCIAL BREAK!!

+ The Commander is in his home as Peter is behind him.
+ Nathan sees him on the camera as the Commander is telling him about what is going on.
+ The Commander tells him that if Peter kills him than he'll get what he wants.
+ Nathan arrives and tells him that if he kills the Commander then he'll be signing their death wish.
+ Peter flies off to save both of them.
+ Matt and Mohinder are getting ready to fight as HRG tells them that Daphne is alive.
+ Mohinder tells Matt that he'll hold him off.
+ HRG sees that Daphne is still alive and saves her.
+ Mohinder is attacking some of the soldiers as he tries to run off and gets shut.
+ HRG tells Matt that he needs to push himself further than he has ever pushed before.
+ HRG tells them that he'll escort Matt out as they capture him.
+ Peter comes in and rescues Matt as he throws a flashbang and flies off with him.

+ HRG and the Commander are talking about that HRG is fully focused on the job.
+ HRG tells the Commander that he is the one who let them get away, but the Commander tells HRG that Nathan is the one who did it.
+ HRG agrees with the Commander to remove Nathan from power.
+ Angela and Nathan are talking about that everything went pretty well and that the Commander does not trust him.
+ Angela tells HRG that he has to play the "role" and that he needs to make difficult choices.

Ratings: HEROES Strong Against a BACHELOR on the Rebound

ABC’s “The Bachelor” continues to surge on Monday night, boosting the network to No. 2 with the show’s best non-finale outing in almost five years.

“Bachelor” averaged a 4.4 adults 18-49 rating from 8 to 10 p.m. last night, according to Nielsen overnights, a season high and up 5 percent from last week’s 4.2.

The show tied with Fox for first place in its timeslot over the two hours, jumping into sole possession of first in its final hour with a 4.9 rating. The show certainly benefited from facing reruns on CBS, which usually challenges for No. 1 in the hour.

It was the highest-rated non-finale of “Bachelor” since May 2004, an impressive feat for a show now in its 13th season that some had written off as past its prime entering this year.

Season to date, the show has averaged a 3.8 rating, its best since the 2006 season.

As a reminder, all ratings are based on live-plus-same-day DVR playback. Seven-day DVR data won’t be available for several weeks. Twenty-eight percent of Nielsen households have DVRs.

Comment: Clearly, those who are writing off Heroes are printing that obit prematurely. Though Heroes was bested by CBS' "Men," the specials mad mincemeat of the other half of that hour om CBS, "Worst Week." They stay competitive in the head to head competition, and pretty much increaed the audience by about a third after a lackluster showing by a heavily-promoted "Chuck" that feautured Jenny McCarthy and Andy Richter.

+ The episode starts with Claire telling the pilot that they are about to make an unexpected landing and Peter freezing the side of the plane.
+ This time around , there is sound instead of music playing as Mohinder and Peter hold each others hands
+ 43 Hours Later, Nathan is standing by a phone and is talking to someone about how Claire got on board and that the prisoners escaped.
+ At the crash site, everyone is running away from the plane as they are being pursued by soldiers.
+ Hiro falls into a ditch and is saved by Matt and Mohinder.
+ Matt asked Hiro if he got his power back as Mohinder tells them that they have to find cover and the others.
+ Matt goes into a trance and leads them to a different direction.
+ Claire and Peter are running up a hill as HRG grabs Claire and tells them that they need to come with him.
+ Peter runs away as HRG tells Claire that no one is going to know what is going to happen.
+ Missiles attack the site and blows it up as HRG and Claire take cover.

+ Ando is trying to get a ticket to Russelville, Arkansas as Daphne comes in and asks Ando if he could help her find Matt.
+ Ando and Daphne are talking about how they need to get to Arkansas and they both disappear.
+ Mohinder is telling Hiro to go surrender because he lost his powers and that they may make him surrender.
+ Mohinder, Hiro, and matt are talking about how Matt gained the ability to draw and that Matt needs to go back to the crash site to save Daphne
+ A mother and boy are arguing about how he is always getting into the fight.
+ The mother and boy stumble upon one of the soldiers tied up, Sylar walks into the room and threatens Agent Simmons that he'll torture the mother and boy in front of him in order to get information.

COMMERCIAL BREAK!!

+ Ando and Daphne appear at the crash site as they see Claire captured.
+ Daphne plans on to search for Matt and disappears.
+ Tracy and Peter are talking about how that Peter can only hold on to one power at a time.
+ Tracy suggests that they need to do something aside from confronting Nathan directly.
+ HRG is trying to convince Claire that what she is doing is right and that she needs to be with the other Heroes.
+ Nathan and HRG are talking about how they need to keep the commander on control.
+ Daphne goes in and rescues Claire
+ Hiro, Claire, Ando, Daphne, and Mohinder are on the hillside.
+ Daphne gets shot repeatedly as Ando and Hiro escape.
+ Matt gets into one person's head and makes him shoot all the other soldiers.
+ Claire takes the bullets as Matt escapes with Mohinder and the Commander takes Claire hostage.
+ Sylar is trying to get the info out of the Agent as he starts using his power to hold Luke's mother hostage.
+ Luke uses his power to blow a cup and Sylar says they need to talk.

+ Claire is captured and the Commander was about to kill Claire as HRG comes in and brings her away.
+ HRG tells her that she has to go home and that she should try to lead a normal life as HRG promises her that he'll try to help them.

+ Tracy is talking to Nathan as they start debating about her getting her old life back. Tracy promises to give Peter to Nathan.
+ Luke is showing Sylar his ability as they start talking about his relationship to his mom.
+ The agent is trying to get free and as the agent got free and picked up the gun Luke came in and burned the agent.
+ His mom is yelling at him for killing him as Sylar smiles.

+ Luke tells Sylar that he knows where his dad is and that they'll take Luke's mom's car with them.
+ Peter and Tracy are arguing about how that they need to incapacitate Nathan.
+ HRG and the Commander are aiming at both Tracy and Peter as they trap them.
+ HRG refuses to take the shot because he believes he can't take it.
+ Peter takes Nathan's power and flies off as Tracy is then captured.
+ HRG and Nathan are talking about how HRG saved Peter.

+ Nathan is still talking on the phone as he is talking about how he is planning to contain everryone.
+ Matt and Mohinder are talking by a house waiting for Hiro and Ando as Peter flies in.

+ Hiro is mentioning that he needs to go to New Delhi to regain his powers and get a store.
+ Peter is telling them that they must bring the fight to them now and must get ready.

With the return of NBC’s regular lineup, Monday nights have gotten a lot more competitive, but Fox managed to stay on top for the third straight week, just ahead of fall leader CBS.

Fox averaged a 4.6 adults 18-49 rating and 11 share, according to Nielsen overnights, with CBS placing second at 4.3/10. ABC was a not-too-distant third at 3.7/9, thanks to a surging “The Bachelor,” and NBC was fourth at 3.3/8, with ABC and NBC both up over last week. Univision placed fifth at 1.9/5 and the CW sixth at 1.2/3.

Fox maintained its nightly lead despite both its dramas, “House” and “24,” dropping a bit from last week, when “House” hit a season-high 5.9 and “24” averaged a 4.2. Last night, “House” slipped to 5.5 and “24” dipped to a 3.7.

The shows were likely hurt by the return of NBC’s scripted lineup, which had been replaced by low-rated unscripted fare and specials the past six weeks.

At 8 p.m., the much-hyped 3D episode of “Chuck” averaged a 3.0, a season high and up 20 percent over its season average of 2.5.

At 9 p.m., “Heroes” averaged a 3.9, its best rating since October and finishing just ahead of “24” in the timeslot.

But perhaps the most surprising numbers came again from ABC’s “The Bachelor,” in the midst of its best season since 2006. The show averaged a 4.1 rating from 8 to 10 p.m. and tied for first in the 9 p.m. slot, apparently benefitting in its final half hour from some CBS switchover.

At 10 p.m. CBS was first with a 4.4 for “CSI: Miami,” followed by ABC with a 3.0 for “True Beauty.” NBC was third with a 2.9 for the season premiere of “Medium,” which improved the network’s usual timeslot average 26 percent, and Univision fourth with a 1.7 for “Cristina.”

Among households, CBS was first for the night with an 8.3 average overnight rating and a 13 share. Fox was second at 7.7/11, ABC third at 6.1/9, NBC fourth at 5.2/8, Univision fifth at 2.3/4 and CW sixth at 1.7/3.

+ A phone is ringing and Tracy goes to pick it up as she says "Hello to the governor."
+ Nathan is on the TV and talking about his position in protecting the people of the US.
+ Tracy is changing her clothes as she notices her window is open and people are around her house.
+ She tries to freeze one of the guys but fails to do so.
+ They surround her as she holds her ground and one of the guys shoot her and tazes her.
+ The guy who shoots her is telling someone that they got the first one.

+ Ando and Hiro are in Tokyo Japan and they enter an abandoned firehouse.
+ Ando and Hiro discuss Ando's superpowers and his life as a super hero.
+ Ando doesn't want to do it until he sees the Andocycle
+ Hiro implants Ando with a GPS device and Ando gets mad and leaves.
+ Peter is trying to save a person's life.
+ Peter couldn't save the guy's life as his partner is trying to tell Peter that it wasn't his fault.
+ Peter said that "he should have been stronger."
+ Claire and Angela are talking about different colleges that Claire wants to plan to go to.
+ Angela and Claire are talking about living normal lives and that going to college is Nathan's and HRG's idea.
+ Claire tells Angela that Sylar is still alive.
+ Angela tells Claire that Pinehearst and Primatech is all over and Claire tells Angela that she'll go and find Claire herself.
+ Sylar walks into a store and is looking around as he sees all these clock parts around.
+ A guy points a gun at Sylar and Sylar talks to him and asks him if he's his father.
+ Sylar is telling him the story he heard from his mom and that he has some questions for him.

+ Matt is in a kitchen eating when Daphne arrives back.
+ Matt is talking to Daphne about using their powers to live better lives.
+ Utsutu appears in Matt's conscience as Matt tries to convince Daphne to live normal lives.
+ Claire overhears Angela talking to Nathan about Nathan's team capturing Matt and Peter
+ Angela sees Claire on the phone and walks away.
+ Sylar's father tells Sylar that he is a different person now.
+ They start arguing about how his father just abandoned him and that Sylar knows he isn't their kid.
+ His father tells him that he got Sylar from his brother in exchange for money.
+ His dad gives him the address of his real father.
+ Sylar is about to kill him but then decides not to.
+ Peter is watching the scene of the crime and the ambulances leave.
+ Peter's partner is talking about how he hates Nathan and that he scares him.
+ Claire tells Peter about how Nathan and Angela are going to capture him and Matt.
+ Nathan goes into a taxi cab and meets up with Mohinder again.
+ They start talking and joking around a bit from their first conversation in the first season.
+ Mohinder is talking about how Nathan is right.
+ Peter and Mohinder are discussing what may happen when the government steps in.
+ Another man enters the car and tells Mohinder just to drive.
+ Mohinder enters a parking lot where a squad of men are ready to apprehend him.
+ The guy orders Mohdiner to get into the van as Mohinder rips open his cab door knock a guy out and blocks the shots and runs.
+ HRG saves Mohinder as he drives by and picks him up.
+ HRG is driving around and trying to interrogate Mohinder about what happened as he stops in front of the guy and tazes Mohinder.
+ Mohinder gets out of the car and collapses. The guy who is in charge of the squad and HRG give each other a nod.

COMMERCIAL BREAK!!

+ Peter arrives at Angela's house and Nathan is waiting there for him.
+ Peter and Nathan start talking about what Nathan has been doing and trying to round up all the people with powers.
+ Nathan assures Peter that this is all his plans.
+ Nathan offers Peter dinner and asks him what he can do and what powers he has.
+ Matt is talking to his turtle as Utsutu appears and Utsutu tells him that he has a message for him.
+ Utsutu tells Matt that he has been chosen to be a prophet and that he will draw.
+ Matt starts drawing as he goes into a trance.
+ Hiro is talking to Ando through his radio.
+ Ando is telling Hiro that he is picking up girls on his Ando cycle.
+ Hiro gets captures by the squad.
+ Ando drives off to see what happened.

COMMERCIAL BREAK!!

+ Matt falls out of his premonition and someone is knocking on the door as Claire walks into Matt's apartment.
+ Claire tells Matt that the company is coming to get him
+ They look at the drawing and sees that the events were happening as soon as they started to look at it.
+ Nathan is in Peter's apartment as he Peter walks in.
+ Peter is looking around and making sure his apartment is safe.
+ Nathan is trying to tell Peter that he is offering protection.
+ Peter says that he can't be on his side and as soon as Nathan finishes hugging him, Mr. Bennet tazes him.
+ Sylar enters a taxidermist house.
+ Sylar is walking around the house and sees a picture of himself and a snow globe.
+ Sylar gets tazed and his neck strapped by the squad as Sylar takes them all down with a combination of electricity, telekinesis, and invincibility.
+ He drags a guy across and Sylars keeps asking him question as he starts cutting his head open.
+ He asks the guy if he knows what happened to the guy who lived in the house.

COMMERCIAL BREAK!!

+ Ando is going through Hiro's computer and trying to find Ando with a GPS system.
+ All the people who have powers are in orange jumpsuits and are being brought into a plane.
+ Claire is shown to Nathan as he lets her free and puts her in a car.
+ Claire knocks the guy who is driving the car out and she runs to the plane wheel. She gets on.
+ Nathan is watching the plane leave into the sky as he walks back into the hanger.
+ All the Heros are sitting down as Claire sneaks in and monitors everybody's movements.
+ She starts releasing all the Heroes and Peter and Claire start breaking everybody apart after Peter absorbs sureshes Powers.
+ Peter accidentally absorbs Tracy's powers and freezes a piece of the hull of the plane as the plane starts to crash.
+ Claire notices that HRG is flying the plane.
+ They are all on the plane screaming as they try to hold on for dear life.
+ Peter was about to fall out of the plane as Suresh holds on to his hand.

CBS’s comedy lineup carried the network to an easy win last night with several season- and series-high performances.

“The Big Bang Theory” and “How I Met Your Mother” both hit season highs among adults 18-49, with “Theory” also setting series records among total viewers and in the demo.

But the biggest numbers came at 9 p.m., where “Two and a Half Men” rang up a season-high 17.9 million viewers and a 5.6 adults 18-49 rating, according to Nielsen overnights.

The episode featured a cameo from Emilio Estevez, brother of series star Charlie Sheen, and it was easily the highest-rated show of the night on any network.

Earlier in the evening, 8 p.m.’s “Bang” set a new series high in viewers with 11.4 million and among 18-49s with a 4.2 rating. Lead-out “Mother” rose to a 4.6 in the demo, besting last season’s first Britney Spears cameo by 0.1.

That led CBS to a dominant victory on the evening with a 4.3 average overnight rating and an 11 share. NBC was second at 2.6/7, Fox third at 2.1/5, Univision fourth at 1.7/4, ABC fifth at 1.5/4 and CW sixth at 0.6/1.

As a reminder, all ratings are based on live-plus-same-day DVR playback. Seven-day DVR data won’t be available for several weeks. Twenty-eight percent of Nielsen households have DVRs.

+ Mohinder is making a recording on hoping that the formula will make him better
+ Mohinder and Peter are talking about their first meeting and how that they talked about powers
+ Daphne steals the formula and Mohinder knocks Peter all over
+ Flint and Knox saves Peter from Mohinder and they start messing up the lab
+ One of the soldiers helps Nathan up and plans to stop Peter
+ Knox comes up and snaps his neck and prevents Nathan from going anywhere
+ Daphne comes back with the formula as Ando stabs himself with the formula and he starts convulsing and falls to the floor
+ Hiro shimmies down the pole and sits up, he then climbs to the roof and falls over

Quirky drama averages 10.2 million total viewers

The series finale of David E. Kelley’s “Boston Legal” was predictably unpredictable, with an unlikely twosome tying the knot in the end (spoiler alert – the names appear further down in the story).

The show’s two-hour sendoff drew decent numbers, too, despite airing against originals on CBS and ESPN’s always-dominant “Monday Night Football.”

“Legal” averaged 10.2 million total viewers from 9 to 11 p.m., according to Nielsen overnights, 11 percent above its season average of 9.2 million.

The show averaged a 2.4 adults 18-49 rating, matching its season average, though that was still a decent showing considering it was without sometime lead-in “Dancing with the Stars,” which boosted ABC’s entire Monday lineup until its midseason finale two weeks ago.

“Legal” was never a huge ratings draw, though it enjoyed some critical acclaim and lots of Emmy love. The show finished its five-year run on a surprising note when platonic friends Denny and Alan got married.

With “Legal’s” departure, Kelley is now without a show in primetime for the first time in two decades.

CBS was first again at 9 p.m. with a 4.3 for “Two and a Half Men” (5.2) and “Worst Week” (3.5), with NBC second with a 3.6 for “Heroes.” ABC was third with a 2.3 for “Legal,” Fox fourth with a 2.1 for “Prison Break,” Univision fifth with a 1.8 for “Fuego en la Sangre” and CW sixth with a 1.0 for “Privileged.” (note that once again "Heroes" was #1 in its time slot in its last half against "Worst," "Boston," "Break," and whatever the CW and Univision had on)

At 10 p.m. CBS completed the nightly sweep with a 4.0 for “CSI: Miami,” while ABC moved to second with a 2.6 for more “Legal.” NBC was third with a 1.8 for “My Own Worst Enemy” and Univision fourth with a 1.5 for “Cristina.”

CBS also finished first for the night among households with a 7.9 average overnight rating and a 12 share. ABC was second at 6.4/10, NBC third at 3.9/6, Fox fourth at 3.3/5, Univision fifth at 2.2/3 and CW sixth at 1.7/3.
