Recap #17: Company Man

This is, essentially, Jack Coleman's show, and a lot of answers have been given. We're still no closer to who might not survive next week show-before-spring-break, but as you read, it was a tearjerker for sure.

My estimation for who will be offed will come in the next post-dp

At the Bennets' home, Ted melts the doorknob off the back door, and he and Matt enter. Matt disconnects Mr. Bennet's computer in hopes there may be some incriminating evidence on there. Ted suggests that Matt just gets inside Mr. Bennet's head. Matt tells him that they're going to confront Mr. Bennet at Primatech. As Matt is disconnecting the computer, he and Ted notice the Bennet family returning home. Ted suggests that they confront Mr. Bennet right then, but Matt is reluctant because he is with his family. Matt and Ted argue briefly but Matt is finally convinced to confront him right then. The Bennets enter the house and Lyle goes to bring his mother upstairs. Ted steps into view and Mr. Bennet tells Lyle to get his mother out of the house. Matt draws his gun and stops them from leaving. Mr. Bennet introduces Matt as an officer of the LAPD, but Matt tells him that he is no longer an officer thanks to him. Mr. Bennet asks why they're in his house with guns. Ted points out that he doesn't need a gun and that Mr. Bennet already knows this. Mr. Bennet claims not to know Ted. Ted tells him that if he keeps on lying, he would get upset, and that when he gets upset he gets "very bright and very hot." Matt tells Mr. Bennet that he's got to help them to keep Ted from getting upset. Mr. Bennet continues to claim that he's just a paper salesman.

Fifteen years ago, Mr. Bennet is interviewed by Thompson. Thompson asks him what he thinks about paper, and tells him that as far as his friends and family are concerned, it's his life. He congratulates Mr. Bennet and welcomes him as the new regional manager for Primatech Paper. Thompson tells him that nobody outside of the organization knows what they do. Mr. Bennet understands and agrees that people aren't ready to know about those who are developing special abilities. Thompson tells him that some of the things he'll be asked to do may be of questionable morality. Mr. Bennet tells him that he has no problem with that. Thompson tells Mr. Bennet that he will have a partner who is already here. Mr. Bennet looks away and Claude Rains appears from being invisible. Mr. Bennet is startled and confused.

In the present, Ted presses Mr. Bennet to explain what goes on at Primatech. Matt explains that Mr. Bennet is responsible for abducting people and claims that he doesn't care what he's doing to people, only that they don't remember what happens. Mrs. Bennet asks how they could be made to forget. Matt hears Claire think about the Haitian and then blame her father for what's happening. Matt reveals that Claire knows that this is Mr. Bennet's fault and that he's got everyone fooled except for her. He then reveals that Claire knows that her mother and Lyle were made to forget but that she wasn't. Matt asks her why the Haitian didn't erase her memory, but Claire tells him that she doesn't know. Mr. Bennet again claims that he's telling the truth and Ted's hands begin radiating. Matt tries to get Ted to relax. Claire reveals that her father isn't a paper salesman. Claire and Matt go into the other room to speak in private. He hears Claire thinking about going to get help since she can't be hurt. Matt tells her not to be a hero because Ted is dangerous and he needs her help to ensure that no one gets hurt. Claire realizes that Matt can read her mind. Matt claims that Mr. Bennet did this to him and Claire asks if he's done this to others as well. Matt tells her that they've both seen strange things and Matt mentions what happened at her school. Matt hears Claire think Peter Petrelli's name and tells Claire that Peter can read minds like he can. He hears Claire think that Peter can also do what she can do. He tells her that Peter told him to protect her and asks if she's got any abilities. He asks her why after Sylar's attack she didn't have any scratches on her, even though the scene was covered in her blood. Again, he reads her mind, catching her thought, "I can heal."

Fourteen years in the past on the rooftop of the Deveaux building, Mr. Bennet and Claude discuss the fate of baby Claire. Thompson motions for Claude and Mr. Bennet to come over. Thompson leaves with Claude, leaving Mr. Bennet to talk to Kaito Nakamura who is holding baby Claire. Kaito asks about Claire's mother and Mr. Bennet tells him that she likely died in the fire. Kaito gives Claire to him and tells him that he will be adopting her. Mr. Bennet is reluctant, and Kaito asks about Mr. Bennet and his wife's issues with conceiving a child. Mr. Bennet says he is relieved, since he doesn't believe he would be a good father. Kaito tells Mr. Bennet he doesn't have a choice, but to not get attached to Claire. He tells Mr. Bennet that if Claire were to manifest, they would take her back.
In the present, Claire asks her father if he made her this way. She asks if she was some kind of experiment. Matt and Ted discuss what to do with the family. Ted tells Matt that he just wants to find a cure for what's happening to them. When Matt asks what if there is no cure, he hears Ted think that he'll kill everyone. Ted tells Matt to get inside Mr. Bennet's head. He listens to Mr. Bennet's thoughts, but they're in Japanese. Ted tells Mr. Bennet that he wants answers. Matt hears Mr. Bennet think that there's a safe in the bookcase. Matt tells Ted who proceeds to head to safe. Once Ted is out of the room, Mr. Bennet gets up and pulls a concealed gun from inside the fireplace. Matt punches Mr. Bennet before he can use the gun, and Ted runs back out and starts kicking Mr. Bennet while he's on the floor. Matt pulls Ted off of Mr. Bennet. Ted points a gun at Sandra and threatens to kill her. Matt hears Mr. Bennet thinking that he needs to trust him and shoot Claire because she can heal. He then hears Claire think to shoot her. Matt shoots Claire and she collapses. Sandra rushes over to her and screams. Mr. Bennet thinks to Matt that he needs to get Ted's trust. Matt tells Ted that they now know how serious they are. Mr. Bennet then thinks to Matt and warns him that he's about to punch him. He punches Matt and claims that he killed Claire. Mr. Bennet tells Matt through his thoughts that they need to move the body before she heals. Matt states that the family shouldn't have to see it, so they do just that. Matt and Mr. Bennet carry Claire into her room where she soon heals and regains consciousness. Matt asks Mr. Bennet if he made her indestructible and Mr. Bennet tells him that he's not responsible for her powers, and that he doesn't appreciate Matt confusing her. Mr. Bennet tells Claire that he will explain later, but for now she needs to do what he tells her to do. Mr. Bennet reveals that the people he works for don't know about Claire or else they would have taken her away. He tells Matt to do what he thinks. He and Matt return downstairs. Matt tells Ted that they'll find what they're looking for at the paper company. Matt says he'll stay with the family while Ted goes with Mr. Bennet. Ted tells him that he'll stay with the family instead because he can do more damage there. Ted tells Mr. Bennet that he'd better be back within an hour.

Fourteen years in the past, Mr. Bennet tells Thompson that his wife found his gun and sedation kit and is suspicious. He apologizes and tells Thompson that he doesn't know what to do. He asks if his wife is in danger. Thompson asks him what he would do if he said "yes." Mr. Bennet tells him he would do whatever he was told. Thompson tells him to relax because his wife isn't going to remember what happened. Thompson explains that there's a mute boy they found from Haiti who can pull memories out of people. He tells Mr. Bennet to thank him afterwards for saving his wife's life.
In the present, Matt and Mr. Bennet enter a secure room at Primatech. Matt tells him that if they don't bring back evidence, Ted will be dangerous. Mr. Bennet tells him that they're bringing back a tranquilizer and that Ted doesn't want evidence, he wants his wife back or revenge for her death. Matt asks what's going to happen to him, whether he'd have his memory erased and be sent back to LA. Mr. Bennet tells him that he's not going anywhere because he's the only one he can trust. He tells Matt that he's alerted the Haitian.

Back at the Bennets', Ted sits forming small explosions in his hands while Claire watches secretly.
At the paper company, Mr. Bennet meets up with the Haitian. He pushes the Haitian against the wall and tells him that he knows that he can talk. He asks who else knows about Claire. The Haitian tells him that it's just the two of them for now, but that he may reveal it to others. When asked why he didn't erase Claire's memories, he claims that he answers to someone in Claire's life whose instructions supersede Mr. Bennet's.

Seven years ago, Mr. Bennet drives Claude down a highway. Claude asks what their mission is and Mr. Bennet tells him that all he knows is that they're looking into a security breach. Claude claims that Mr. Bennet knows more than he's letting onto, but just doesn't want to tell him. Mr. Bennet tells Claude that he is the security breach. He asks Claude if he's hiding someone with special abilities. Claude tells him that the work they're doing is starting to concern him, and that he thought that since Mr. Bennet is hiding Claire, he'd be more sympathetic. Mr. Bennet tells him that Claire doesn't have any powers. Claude admits that she doesn't have powers yet, but that someday she might. Mr. Bennet claims that if she does manifest abilities, he'll turn her in as ordered. Claude tells Mr. Bennet that he was in his office when he was told to kill him, but got into the car with Mr. Bennet because he thinks that he's a good man. Mr. Bennet stops the car on a bridge and tells Claude to get out. He asks Claude to tell him who he's hiding, but Claude questions the motives of "the company". Mr. Bennet pulls his gun and asks him again. Claude tells him that he won't hunt his own people and that Mr. Bennet has a choice. Mr. Bennet shoots him and he falls against the rail of the bridge. He shoots him again and Claude turns invisible and appears to fall over the rail.

At the paper company, the Haitian and Mr. Bennet argue over Claire. The Haitian claims that Mr. Bennet can't be trusted to put the interests of the company over Claire's safety and that makes him a liability. They argue over how to best keep Claire safe and Matt tells them that unless they give Ted what he wants she won't be safe.

Ted watches a clock at the Bennet residence when he hears a noise upstairs. As he goes to investigate, Claire comes in through the back door and cuts her mom and brother loose. Investigating upstairs he finds Mr. Muggles in Claire's room. When he pulls back the sheets on Claire's bed, he finds her missing and runs back downstairs. Lyle manages to run out the back door, but Claire is caught by Ted. Claire's mom refuses to leave and goes to help Claire. Ted uses his power to burn Claire's neck and then he and Claire's mom watch as she regenerates. Ted binds Claire and her mother with tape. Her mom tells her that she always thought Claire was a miracle. Claire denies that she's a miracle, but her mom tells her that when someone rises from the dead that it's a miracle. Claire's mom finally realizes what Claire meant when she told her that she "walked through fire without getting burned." Ted asks Claire if Matt knew that she would heal when he shot her and becomes suspicious. Matt and Mr. Bennet return. Mr. Bennet offers Ted his file. Matt tells Ted that they have what they came for and should leave. Mr. Bennet tells Ted that if the people he works for knew that he's giving Ted this information they would kill him and that since he's risking his own life, he would like Ted to let his family go. The Haitian comes in the back door and releases Claire and her mother who all leave through the back door and meet Lyle outside. Mr. Bennet tells Ted that he's not responsible for his powers and that there's no cure for them. Thompson enters secretly through the back door and points a gun at Ted. Mr. Bennet tries to warn him that shooting him will "set him off", but Thompson shoots him before he can finish his sentence and hits him in the shoulder. Ted falls to the ground and loses control of his powers, setting the house on fire. Mr. Bennet tries to reach Ted to sedate him but is unable to get close enough without being burned. Claire returns to the house and tells her father that she can do it. Matt helps Mr. Bennet out of the house. As Claire approaches Ted she gets horribly burned. The front door blows away and the explosions cease. Claire emerges from the house badly burned. As she approaches her father she regenerates. Her family hugs her.

At the paper company, Thompson and Mr. Bennet talk. Thompson tells Mr. Bennet that it's a shame that he's going to have to kill another partner. Mr. Bennet asks if he's been located, and Thompson tells him that they haven't found the partner, the Haitian. He tells Mr. Bennet that the Haitian probably figured Mr. Bennet would turn him, in not realizing that it was actually Mr. Bennet who had been hiding Claire. Mr. Bennet claims that Claire must have trusted the Haitian over him. They observe Ted who is sedated in a cell. They then check on Matt who is unconscious on a table being examined by Candace Willmer. Thompson remarks that having someone with Matt's powers around will be very useful. He then asks Mr. Bennet when they can expect him to bring in Claire. He tells Thompson that he'll bring her in now.

Mr. Bennet drives Claire down a highway. She asks her father where she's going and whether she'll see her family again. He tells her that he doesn't know and just wanted to protect her.

Three years ago, Claire helps her father pick out a pair of glasses. Claire asks if she's going to need glasses someday and Mr. Bennet reveals to her that she was adopted. She asks about her "real family," to which he comments that The Bennets are her real family. He states that her real family is based on how much they love her. Claire picks out a pair of horn-rimmed glasses for her father. He tries them on and Claire tells him that he looks "like her dad."
Mr. Bennet pulls over on the bridge. He and Claire get out and meet with the Haitian who is waiting for them. He tells Claire that this is goodbye, and Claire tells him that there has to be a better way. The Haitian tells her that this is the best way to keep the company from suspecting that her father was involved. Mr. Bennet tells the Haitian where to shoot him so that he won't be killed. The Haitian shoots Mr. Bennet just below the left side of his ribcage. Mr. Bennet tells the Haitian to then "go deep" and erase his mind of any memories that would lead people to Claire. The Haitian erases Mr. Bennet's memories as Claire watches and cries.

Heroes Continues to Rack Impressive Numbers

There's no stopping the cheerleader.
Last night's Fast Ratings show that NBC's Heroes is a bona fide hit, something newtorks all dream about when they pull out thier new schedules.
And it seems that the ballsy move of running Heroes at the same time as FOX's juggernaught 24 is having an impact on old Mr. Bauer.
In the 9-10 PM (ET) hour, was in first with its comedy block, followed Heroes in 2nd with a 8.2 rating and a 12 share, closely follwed by 24's 7.9/12. ABC's Supernanny held at 4th, The CW's Black comedies, Girlfriends and The Game at 5th, and MyNetworkTV's novella Watch Over Me pretty much unwatched.
The interesting part is that, while Two and a Half Men on CBS did get first place with a mighty 10.5/15 from 9-9:30, David Spade's Rules of Engagement slipped to an 8.9/13, almost allowing Heroes to take first place at that time.
According to www.zap2it.com, ratings information is taken from fast national data, which includes live and same-day DVR viewing. All numbers are preliminary and subject to change.

Recap: "Unexpected"

For weeks Heroes has promised us a major character death, and for weeks nothing has happened. The anticipation turned us Heroes fans into blood thirsty maniacs, crying for the crimson to spill. Finally, this week, in Heroes ‘Unexpected’, the unexpected finally happened… somebody flied, and somebody died. But it might not be the last Heroes death in the near future…

‘Unexpected’ was, again, another plot-dense foray in the world of our Heroes. As usual, one set of Heroes sat out the evening, in this case Nikissica. Plot advancement was good, tension was good, action was high, and drama was at times quite piqued.

We caught up with Ted the nuclear guy who meets an all new hero, Hannah. A decidedly Aeon Flux looking babe with the ability to transmit and receive electronic messages (yawn.) She reveals to Ted that the marks are the result of a tracking device. Graphic novel readers have reason to be suspicious of Hannah, since she was actually trained by H.R.G and acts like she doesn’t know him. Crafty little minx.

Matt’s diamond adventure comes full circle when his wife discovers one of the rings and goes to have it sized, thinking it is a gift from Matt, and finds out it is worth $40k. Matt gets off the hook when he receives a call from Ted asking to meet up.

Claire is in a tizzy when her mother starts having some spontaneous memory problems and collapses. At the hospital she discovers that mom has a couple of bruises on the brain. Seems Haitian guy’s power isn’t so innocuous after all. When she tries to tell the doctor about Haitian dude’s mind wipe spree, the doctor – naturally – doesn’t buy it.

In New York Isaac is meeting up with H.R.G and Haitian dude over Peter. He has finally figured out that Peter is invisible. The word invisible brings up gleam to H.R.G’s eye. Seems they thought Claude was dead. H.R.G gives Isaac a gun and tells him to shoot Peter if he shows up.

Hiro teams up with the guy who does the voice of Patrick Starr on Spongebob to hunt down Ando and ‘Hope’. Seems like she has stolen some booty from the casino, but Mr. Starr isn’t so innocent either. He wants his cut. When they finally catch up some gun fighting ensues and Hiro is able to summon his power in time to save their lives. Ando does suffer a superficial wound and this leads Hiro to decide to leave Ando out of his mission. He hopes a bus back to Vegas and leaves Ando and the Versa behind.

H.R.G shows up an tries to take out Peter and Claude but peter is now getting pretty good with his powers. He uses Sylar’s telekinesis to bat away some electrified darts and Nathan’s flight ability to fly Claude to safety. Claude is quite shook up by the appearance of H.R.G and decides it is time to bail on Peter.

Sylar and Suresh find a special in Montana with super hearing. Sylar kills her, no surprises here, and Suresh is still blissfully ignorant to all the signs that Sylar is a madman. Not much advancement in the unholy alliance here other than now Sylar has a power which is proving to be pretty disabling.

Ah, the death. Peter shows up at Isaacs studio convinced that Isaac turned him in, which he did. Peter turns invisible and taunts Isaac who picks up a gun and shoots wildly, turning to see that he has shot Simone. Yup, two good shots through the chest and she dies stone cold in Peter’s arm. There is an exchange of glances between the two that says there is going to be some more action, but we cut away before any fists fly.

Back at H.R.G’s house, they bring Claire’s mom home, things are tense between Claire and H.R.G as she has now openly blamed him for mom’s condition. Before they can carry their argument any further though, Matt, Ted, And Hannah show up and take the family hostage.

Yes, another great episode. I’ve adjusted to the pace enough to know that nothing too spectacular is going to happen on a sustained basis. I must admit though, I’m a little perturbed that Heroes has taken the LOTS path and ignored plot threads. Remember when Haitian guy said to Claire ‘Do you want to know a secret?’ Well… what the hell was it? Sheesh.

That shyster wasn't the only one Jessica offed last night.....

The winner of the HEROES Vs. 24 battle was clear and concise last night. With a 2 hour block of 24 pulling in a 4.9 rating average for both hours, HEROES is clearly the show of choice which doesn't fair well for the once mighty Bauer Hour. The second half hour of 24 fell from first to second behind DEAL OR NO DEAL despite its small gain in viewers of the hour. Buzz was were 24 not up against HEROES its numbers would be back to where they were last season, but if last nights 8 o'clock hour is any indication it could just be that people are losing interest in terrorist fare favoring fantasy instead....

Recap: #15 "Run"

Synopsis

Nathan receives a call from Meredith and she tells him that their daughter found her. Nathan says that it's been 14 years and that he went to Meredith's funeral. Meredith explains that the fire wasn't an accident and that she was being chased, so when the police thought she was dead she took advantage of it. Meredith makes a comment that maybe someday Claire will run for Congress. Nathan expresses suspicion about the timing of her call since it's so close to the election. Meredith points out that if news got out about his having a child outside of marriage that it would look bad. Nathan offers her $100,000 for her silence and hangs up the phone.

Sandra and Mr. Bennet return home. Mr. Bennet helps Sandra through the door. Claire asks her mother if she's ok. She says she's been better, but Mr. Bennet says she's fine and just needs some rest. Claire's father tells her that she had an appointment with a neurologist who ran some tests. He tells Claire that Sandra has been having headaches. Annoyed, she points out that she's been having some memory loss, too. He tells her that he's handling the situation. Still spacey, Sandra tells Claire not to worry.

Jessica uses makeup to cover up the symbol on her back. Niki tells Jessica that she won't be able to fool D.L., but Jessica is confident that he won't be able to tell that it's actually her and not Niki.

Janice admires Matt's outfit for his first day working as private security. Matt puts on his gun holster and his wife expresses concern that he's taking his gun. Matt tells her that he makes more money because of his permit to carry a concealed weapon. When Janice asks if he's going to need the gun, Matt remarks that he's basically just a glorified babysitter.

Micah asks D.L. and Jessica, who is still impersonating Niki, if they're ever going to talk about their powers. He says that he feels like they should be using them for something good like fighting crime. She tells Micah to just have fun at school for now. D.L. tells her that there's a package waiting for her on the table. She opens the package and speaks to an unknown person over the phone. She reveals that someone stole a large amount of money from Mr. Linderman and is now wanted dead. Included in the package is a picture of Aron Malsky.
Matt picks up Aron Malsky from the airport and tells him that he's here to protect him.

Hiro and Ando return to the Montecito Casino and sneak in through the kitchen. Ando tries to convince Hiro not to bother with taking the sword, but Hiro tells him he won't give up. Hiro tells him that a hero must have hope. Ando tells Hiro that he can figure out how to get into Mr. Linderman's office and that he'll look for hope. They hear a woman in costume crying in the kitchen. Ando is attracted to the woman and asks if there's anything they can do to help. She introduces herself as Hope.

Matt makes small-talk with Aron Malsky as he drives him to his meeting. Aron tells him that he just wants to be driven to the meeting and back to the airport without being bothered, including being bothered by Matt. Matt hears Aron think that if Matt doesn't know how to use his gun then they may both end up dead.
Mohinder places calls to a number of people on the list, introducing himself, but they all hang up on him. He plays the messages on his answering machine and finds a call from Zane Taylor who is concerned about his new abilities and wants Mohinder to come meet with him.

In a dressing room at the casino, Hope tells Hiro and Ando about her abusive boyfriend. She tells them that she left while he was sleeping but accidentally left her bag in the room. She considers going back up to talk to him and apologize, but Ando tells her that he and Hiro will do it. Surprised, Hiro pulls Ando aside and Ando tries to convince Hiro to help. Ando reminds Hiro that he told him to find "Hope" and Hiro brushes it off as a coincidence. Ando asks Hiro why everything he wants to do is their destiny, but when he wants to do something it's a waste of time. Hope overhears Ando mention Mr. Linderman and tells them that she can introduce them to Mr. Linderman if they can get her bag for her. Hope offers them a plan for getting past security. Ando dresses up as a hotel employee and pushes a cart of food down a hallway. He knocks on a man's door and tells him that it's room service. The man points out that he didn't order room service and Ando tells him it's complimentary. Ando pushes the cart into the man's room and is soon told to leave. After letting Ando out the man gets into the shower. Hiro comes out from underneath the cart that Ando pushed into the room. He lets Ando back into the room and they start looking for Hope's bag. Hiro opens up an armoire, sees a large rifle, and tells Ando that they need to leave. Ando tries to convince Hiro to stay, but Hiro refuses. They both head for the door, but once Hiro is out of the room Ando closes the door and remains in the room. Ando looks under the bed and finds Hope's bag, but before he can retrieve it the man gets out the shower. Ando crawls under the bed with the bag and hides.

Zane Taylor sits, nervously waiting for Mohinder to arrive. The doorbell rings and he rushes to the door. At the door is Sylar. He asks Sylar if his name is Dr. Suresh and Sylar replies "yes." Zane invites Sylar inside. Zane tells him that he's never been special before and offers to show Sylar his ability. He takes a pot from the kitchen and places it on the floor. He warns Sylar to step back since things may get messy.

Nathan and his mother discuss the situation that has arisen concerning Claire. Nathan tells her that he's going to go to Texas and take care of it. Angela suggests that he not go to Texas and risk letting the press find out about Claire. He tells her that he owes both Meredith and Claire more than just a phone call. Angela tries to convince Nathan that as far as Claire goes, he's just a glorified sperm donor. Nathan comments on how cold his mother is. Angela tells him that his tough exterior is just a façade and that if he meets Claire, he's going to get attached to her and she's just going to take all their money. She tells him to just wire them some money.
Claire sits in her bed looking at the necklace Meredith gave her. He father knocks at the door and comes in. She asks her father how her mom is and he tells her that she's resting. He brings up that he knows Claire cut school yesterday. She tells him that she and Zach went to the aquarium for information for their report and that her mom said she could skip school to go. Mr. Bennet pulls out the aquarium tickets and tells her he knows they're fake. Claire accuses him of spying on her and he tells her that he doesn't know where she was and he doesn't want to know. He tells her that her behavior is unacceptable and grounds her. Claire protests and Mr. Bennet reminds her that he's her father. Claire argues that he's not her real father. He admits it but tells her he's the closest thing she's got to a father.

Claire calls Meredith and asks to talk about her father. Meredith tells her that she found him and that he's going to fly down from New York. Claire tells her that she wants to meet him, but Meredith is unsure. Meredith tells her that she'll talk to her father and see what he says.

Matt escorts Aron into a building. Outside, Jessica is leaning up against a tree waiting. Inside, Aron tells the man he's meeting that he's got the money and wants to see the diamonds. The man tells Aron about the diamonds and mentions that his offer is more than generous. Matt hears the man think that it won't matter because Linderman's guy will be there soon and that he won't get out alive. Matt tells him that this is a setup and that they have to leave immediately. Walking through the hallway, Matt asks Aron who Mr. Linderman is. Aron tells him that Mr. Linderman is his ex-employer and then asks how Matt knows his name. He asks Aron why Mr. Linderman sent someone to kill him and he hears Aron think that it's because he stole Mr. Linderman's $2 million. Matt mentions out loud that Aron stole the money and Aron asks him how he knows that. As they wait for an elevator, Aron gives Matt a diamond in exchange for helping him get out alive. Matt hears Jessica's thinking about shooting him and Aron as the elevator approaches their floor. Matt points his gun at the elevator door. When the elevator doors open, Jessica exits and Matt and Aron are gone.

Hiro returns to the dressing room to find Hope. Hiding in a rack of clothing, he overhears her talking on the phone saying that she's sick of her partner taking half of the profit when she does all the work. She says that she found "two Chinese guys to help her out." She tells the person on the phone how she conned them into helping her and says that she's going to take a bus and meet him. Hiro loses his balance and trips through the rack of clothing. She tells Hiro that she was on the phone with her mom. Hiro tells her that they are Japanese, not Chinese. Hope asks them where the bag is. Hiro tells her that she's a bad person and that while she may have fooled Ando, she hasn't fooled him. She calls Hiro Sulu and punches him in the face, knocking him down.
Aron and Matt run down the stairs trying to escape. Aron has to stop briefly to use his inhaler. They exist the stairwell and Matt tells Aron to wait by the elevator. As Jessica descends the stairs she sees Niki in a reflection. Niki tries to tell her to stop, but Jessica doesn't listen. Niki tells her that this is her life and that she can't do this to her. Outside the stairwell, Matt is able to hear both Niki's and Jessica's thoughts. Jessica reveals to Niki that she's doing this to repay Mr. Linderman for getting her out of jail because Niki wasn't able to do it.

Matt calls one of his police associates and tells him that he's got possibly two shooters and needs backup. Jessica shoots at Matt and Aron but misses. Matt returns fire, allowing himself and Aron to get away. Matt tells Aron to go hide and tells him that he'll buy them some time until the police arrive. Jessica sees the stairwell door close and enters the stairwell. Matt comes up behind her and puts a gun to her head. He tells her to drop her gun down the stairwell, which she does. He handcuffs her to the railing and tells her that he heard her partner Niki and wants to know where she is. Jessica is surprised that Matt heard Niki and tells him that she's probably off killing Aron. Matt leaves Jessica handcuffed and goes looking for Aron. He finds him in a room and hears him thinking "fourth one over, third one back" over and over. He finds Aron, but Jessica shows up behind him and throws him out the window. Matt falls only a short way and lands on the large sign in front of the building. He wakes up moments later as the police are arriving.

Claire arrives at Meredith's house and tells her that she needs to see her father. She and Meredith take a walk. She tells Meredith that her mother is sick and that since her father has money and wants to help them, maybe he can help her mother. Meredith tells Claire that by help all she meant was money. Meredith tells Claire that she can't count on her father for help. Meredith claims that her father is only sending $50,000 and that she is entitled to half of it. Claire tells her that she doesn't want the money. Meredith tells Claire that she's going to be heading back to Mexico for a while and that they won't see each other for a while. She takes a picture of Claire with her cell phone.

Matt climbs back in the window and finds Aron snapped in half. The police arrive and Matt tells them he's on the job.

Mohinder finally arrives at Zane's house and rings the doorbell. Sylar opens the door and introduces himself as Zane. He invites Mohinder in and offers him some tea. Mohinder remarks that while Zane sounded stressed over the phone he appears to be much calmer now. Sylar claims he had an epiphany about it that morning. He explains how it was like seeing all the pieces of a puzzle fit together. He tells Mohinder that he was trying to deny it at first, but that there's no shame in the ability he has. Sylar offers to show Mohinder his ability. Sylar retrieves a toaster and places it on the floor. He tells Mohinder to step back so he doesn't get his clothes dirty. Sylar reaches out to the toaster and it begins to destabilize and turns into a liquid.

Nathan arrives at Meredith's trailer. Nathan apologizes for the way things turned out. Meredith tells him that they were never going to work out anyway. He gives Meredith the money and asks where Claire is. Meredith tells him that he just missed her, but outside the trailer, Claire listens to the conversation. She shows Nathan a picture of Claire. He's initially reluctant, but eventually takes the phone and looks. She tells Nathan that Claire thought he was going to rescue her from her life. She tells Nathan that she told Claire that Nathan was just there to give her the money and leave. She offers to call Claire and get her to return, but Nathan tells her that it's okay. Nathan gets back into the car and leaves. As the car is driving away, Claire throws a large rock at it and cracks the rear window. Nathan appears emotional and dismisses it as just being the work of some kids.
Speaking to Sylar, Mohinder asks him how he's able to control his ability. Sylar tells him it's like the awkwardness of riding a bike for the first time. Mohinder tells Sylar that he'd like a DNA sample and hands him a swab. Sylar goes to get the tea and swabs inside the mouth of Zane, who is dead on the floor. Mohinder suggests that he be careful who he talks to about his ability because there are people who may not understand and may want to hurt him. He tells Sylar that there are others with abilities as well and that with some time and research he may be able to find hundreds or thousands of people. Sylar offers to come with him and help him find these people.

Ando finds Hope and gives her the bag he took from the room. She tells Ando to come with her since she needs a ride to her mom's house in Primm. He asks where Hiro is and she claims she took him to meet the guy who would introduce him to Mr. Linderman. When Ando asks why he didn't wait for him she tells him that Hiro said he didn't need him anymore. Ando is confused, but she shuts him up by kissing him and telling him that they need to go.

Trapped in a closet, Hiro tries to charge the door and break it open but fails. He hears a noise from the other side and, assuming it's Ando, he explains that Hope is dangerous. The man whose hotel room they had snuck into opens the door and points a gun at Hiro. He introduces himself as Steve Gustavson, a member of the State Gaming Commission. Hiro gives the Vulcan salute and tells him "I come in peace."

Matt speaks to a detective at the scene of Aron's murder. He explains that he heard both Niki and Jessica talking and that Jessica was strong enough to break his handcuffs. The detective asks Matt if he knows where the diamonds are, but he doesn't know. Matt remembers what he heard Aron think before he was killed and realizes the suitcase is over the ceiling panels. He goes to give the bag of diamonds to the detective, but hears the detective thinking that Matt's just a joke and will never wear a badge again. Matt decides to pocket the diamonds.

Claire returns home and finds a pot of water boiling over on the stove and her mother yelling at Mr. Muggles. Her mom calls Mr. Muggles a "mangy thing" and tells Claire it came at her out of nowhere. When Claire tells her he's her dog, she tells Claire that she doesn't have a dog and doesn't even know who Claire is. She leaves the room.

Jessica speaks to someone on the phone again and tells the person that "it's done." She then finds out from Micah that she received another package. She opens it and finds a picture of Nathan. She tells the person on the phone to "consider it done."

To survive in this world, we hold close to us those people on whom we depend. We trust in them our hopes, our fears. But what happens when trust is lost? Where do we run when things we believe in vanish before our eyes? When all seems lost, the future unknowable, our very existence in peril... all we can do is run.

TWoP: Distractions Thumbnail recap

Distractions
By Erin Season 1 Episode 14 Aired on 2007.02.05

Claude and Peter are well on their way to becoming a dynamic duo, with Peter finally learning how to master some control over his powers. Jessica gets coaxed out of retirement by her shrink and winds up tasering the poor woman within an inch of her life. Sylar traps Bennet in his cell and heads off to pay a visit to Claire and Mr. Muggles. Simone asks Isaac to look for Peter during his psychic episodes. Isaac's agrees because he wants to get to Peter before he has a chance to explode all over New York.

Claire and Zach take a secret road trip to visit her real mother in a trailer park in the middle of nowhere, and mother and daughter have a tearful reunion. Hiro's dad chastises him for his side trip into fantasyland and Hiro just responds by spilling all the beans about the painting and Linderman and the Sword of Destiny. Hiro's dad shows what he thinks of this scenario by ripping the painting apart. Claude convinces Peter that the way to control his power is to stop thinking of the people in his life and start looking out for number one.

Sylar breaks into the Bennet household and strikes up a friendship with Mr. Muggles and Mrs. Bennet. The shit hits the fan when Mrs. Bennet starts getting suspicious of him. He uses his telekinesis to fling her around and seems about to finish the job when HRG busts in and shoots him a hell of a lot. He gets away, unfortunately. Claire shows her mom her gift of regeneration, and her mom responds by sharing her own gift.

Hiro very cleverly works it so that his sister gains his father's respect and, possibly, a new position of power at the family firm. Linderman's greasy lawyer gets Niki released from her padded prison. Simone and Isaac share a romantic moment on the Magical Rooftop of Superheroes as Peter watches with Claude at his side. Shortly thereafter, Claude shoves him off the roof in order to make him fly, but Peter just crashes into a parked cab. And promptly channels his Claire power and regenerates. Niki's locked up for good behind a mirror and Jessica's looking to have a good time, all of the time.

And Claire's daddy?

It's Nathan, y'all. IT'S NATHAN.
