io9: Five Crucial Plot Points to Remember Before Watching Heroes Tonight

Season 3 of NBC’s superhero drama Heroes starts up tonight in a special two-hour extravaganza that will introduce a season called "Villains." If you’re at a loss to recall exactly what transpired among the heaps of characters in this intricate, cliffhangery series, you’re not alone. So here’s a little five-point redux to get you back up to speed. (Spoilers from the last three seasons ahead.)

(1) Nathan Petrelli: Seemingly Dead. Then Alive. Now Seemingly Dead Again.
At the end of season one, the burgeoning politico saved the world by using his powers of flight to zoom his his radioactive little brother, Peter, into the air — so he detonate in space. Nathan was severely burned . . . until a self-healer/immortal named Adam Monroe befriended Peter and convinced the sibling to let him heal Nathan. The latter made a full recovery. However, at the end of season 2, the older Petrelli faced mortality once again when a mysterious person in a black coat shot him just as he was about to out himself while giving a public speech about superhumans. See video for even more on this plot below.

(2) The Company and Safe Virus
Formed in 1997, the Company set out to monitor, and sometimes perform tests on, mutant superpowered individuals throughout the world. After discovering the fatal Shanti virus—which shuts down the enhanced abilities of evolved humans—the Company developed a safe strain of said virus that would inhibit powers without inadvertently whacking the superhuman. This strain was used to control the erratic, schizo She-Hulk, Nikki/Jessica Sanders, and stifle the abilities of the power-sucking villain/psycopath Sylar. Sanders willfully subjected herself to this research; Sylar, however, has been on a warpath to obtain an antidote so he go get back to his badass self. The only cure comes from mixing the blood of self-healing cheerleader Claire Bennet and geneticist Mohinder Suresh. At the end of the season, Sylar obtains the serum from Mohinder through felonious means, then appears to “heal” himself. Muhahahaha.

(3) The Company and the Fatal Virus
As mentioned in No. 1, Peter Petrelli exploded in the sky and was presumed dead. So why is he alive (and frequently shirtless)? He actually healed himself after the fireworks, then had a run-in with the Company; they ran tests on him and Adam Monroe, the guy in the next cell over. After the duo made a break, Adam duped Peter into chasing after a vial of the original Shanti virus stored in a vault. You see, Adam is an immortal dude who was kicked out of the Company back in the day for his dubious morality, and in season two his mission was twofold: to (a) kill off his old Company compadres, among them Hiro’s dad; and (b) use powerful Peter to obtain the Shanti virus (under the guise of disposing of it) to obliterate humanity. After Peter realized what’s what, a scuffle ensued with himself, Adam, and Hiro Nakamura—the time-traveller who knew Adam's past as baddie from the feudal era. Peter grabbed the vial and destroyed it, while Hiro teleported Adam into a grave where he’s buried alive. Meanwhile, both Peter and Hiro have traveled into an alternate future where the virus has ravaged the planet.

(4) Nikki/Jessica: Possibly a Goner
The newly widowed, schizo-unstable mom moved her technopathic son Micah to New Orleans, where he could live with relatives while she went to the Company for help in stripping her of her out-of-control alternate personality Jessica (who has super-strength). Meanwhile, Micah discovered new powers — in his cousin Monica Dawson, who can imitate anything she sees on TV, including ninja skills, though that proved moot when she was kidnapped by thugs. The newly powerless Nikki—conveniently back in town—came in for the save and freed Monica from the burning building where she was held captive. Mama, however, did not emerge from the embers.

(5) The Horn-Rimmed-Glasses Man: Still a Tried and True Company Man
Claire’s adoptive father, once a stoic, fearsome agent, quit the Company after they attempted to capture Claire. Last season, he teamed with Mohinder to take down the organization, with the latter as an inside man. But the scientist switched sides, and helped the Company nab Claire because he wanted to use her blood’s regenerative abilities to save other people. In retaliation, Bennet kidnapped the feisty, lightning-hurling Elle (daughter of another Company operative), bullying the Company into swapping the two abductees. Once free, Elle shot Bennet, who was taken to a Company hospital where they used Claire’s blood to heal him. To protect his family, Bennet agreed to work with the Company.

LA Times: Thinks look bleak....for now

Lava is devouring the world, our protagonists are being imprisoned. What does Tim Kring have up his sleeve this season?

By Mary McNamara
Times Television Critic

September 22, 2008After a summer watching actors as diverse as Robert Downey Jr., Steve Carell and Christian Bale save the world, or some small part of it, it would certainly seem that Americans need more heroes like they need another drop in the Dow Jones. (Actually, the appearance of International Markets Gal or Anti-Foreclosure Man would be welcome.)

Comic heroes, superheroes, disaffected and often drunken heroes -- sitting in the darkened multiplex it was difficult not to worry, just a bit, about Tim Kring and the good folks at NBC.

A supersonic hit when it premiered two seasons ago, “Heroes” fell into disarray last season, going on an incomprehensible world tour and spending too much time in ancient Japan. In such a hero-saturated market, how could they rebound with Season 3?Apparently, by focusing on villains, or at least that's the subtitle -- "Volume Three: Villains" and presumably that's the plan.

NBC made only the first of tonight's two-hour premiere available to critics, but it was short on heroics and long on dark foreshadowing. It opens four years in the future, when things are not going so well. We know this instantly because Peter (Milo Ventimiglia) has a huge scar on his face and Claire (Hayden Panettiere) is not only a brunet, she's wearing black leather. And aiming a gun at Peter."I can fix it," he tells her. "All of it.""It" seems to refer to a world in which the heroes are hunted and imprisoned.

Claire shoots anyway, as if the empathic Peter could not bend time -- which naturally he does -- and bam, we're back where we left off last season.

To recap as non-spoiler-alert as possible, Nate (Adrian Pasdar) gets shot, only this time we see who does it; Hiro (Masi Oka), bored with his new CEO-ship, blithely puts the world back in peril; Mohinder (Sendhil Ramamurthy) goes all "Young Frankenstein" over the origins of everyone's various powers; a character we thought was definitely dead apparently isn't; and in a grisly scene, Sylar (Zachary Quinto) finally gets what he has always wanted.

Clearly the writers have big plans -- a world broken in half and devoured by hot lava seems to figure in prominently -- and there are a few very hopeful signs in the first hour. A super speedy blond by the name of Daphne (Brea Grant) makes her first "appearance" in Hiro's office, and she's cute as a button. Nate gets religion, and that's always interesting to see on television. Mohinder, the world's worst researcher throughout the story line, appears to be stepping over to the dark side -- something that promises to make him more interesting, if only because he could not possibly become more boring.

Hiro has a vision in which the true-hearted Ando (James Kyson Lee) has become slightly less steadfast, adding new dimension to a character seemingly doomed to sidekick status. Which brings us to some of the less reassuring aspects. Even just a half hour in, it's difficult not to wish everyone would just lighten the heck up. The graphic novel noir feel is becoming increasingly oppressive, and everyone is just so grim. Hiro provides some comic relief, but his trademark insistence on being a hero is getting a little old and, frankly, self-aggrandizing.

Meanwhile, the dialogue seems to be retreating into a comic-book familiarity that borders on camp. Whatever happened to the snappiness of "Save the cheerleader, save the world"?

One hopes that Kring and his writers also spent some time in front of the big screen this summer. Because there they would learn that the real secret of a good hero movie is not the plot twists or cool graphics but the resonance of the characters and, above all, the witty banter.

Without a generous scattering of smart riposte, even matters of life and death that involve hot lava and exposed brains can fall flat.

Tonight.....tonight....

Well, we know know, at least, how they are going to do a hour clip show tonight.

NBC's Heroes-polooza will start at 8pm ET/PT with what they call "Countdown To the Premiere." This will be a showing of a party NBC cooked up for the shows stars and fans in Hollywierd a couple of weeks ago. Now it would have been nice if it were, say, a LIVE event.....but, we'll take it. Count on lots of "Greatest Hits, and Grunberg doing his host/mugging bit again. Please, NBC, give this man a game show, quick.

Ny now, we probably know just about what will happen after 9pm, except maybe the last 30 minutes. If Heroes HAS come back to form, we should be treated to one non-spoiled HOLYSHITE moment around about 10:54.

NOt that the competition will be any forgiving. Season Premieres abound tonight: CBS's comedies and CSI: Miami, Prison Break after Sarah Conner on FOX, and Gossip Girl and One Tree Hill on The WB/CW.

Oh, and on ABC...that Dancing show. FIve words: Ted McGinley...Jump the Shark.

I will quote the JTS website....

"Ted is the patron saint of shark jumping. Chances are that if Ted is anywhere
near your cast, consider the show on the downward spiral. That's not to take
away from Ted's fine acting skills. Consensus here enjoys Ted more on the big
screen (Revenge of the Nerds) than on our sets. Then again, we wouldn't have a
patron saint...thanks Ted!"

Behold.....Married with Children....the Love Boat....Welcome Back Kotter....'Til Death.

And now.........Dancing with the E-List!

I'm sorry, I have never been a fan of this. I am just hoping that the presence of the SharkJumper will seal its fate.

Just our luck.....Jeffererson D'arcy will be out of the first round.

As I said when this thig started three years ago.......HEROES FIRST!

Well...is she is.....or is she ain't???

Is Niki dead?

You tell me.

Here is what we know from www.heroestheseries.com:

So what’s Ali Larter’s Niki/Jessica Sanders (or is it now Tracy Strauss?) character been up to on Heroes? It’s probably not a stretch to say that the entire Sanders clan didn’t exactly have a lot to do in Season 2, with Niki mostly spending her time in New Orleans daydreaming about her dearly departed hubby D.L., a man with the power to phase through any object, but for some reason forgot to use it when someone shot him. (Yes, that was very convincing, writers of Heroes.) Of course, we can explain away Ali Larter’s lack of activity in Season 2 to Ali’s burgeoning movie career, as she had roles in not one, not two, but four movies in 2007 alone. So what can we expect from Ali Larter and her characters in Season 3? Let’s see what we know already… SPOILERS BELOW.

Niki Sanders is gone, metaphorically “killed” in that fiery inferno we saw at the end of Season 2. She has since been replaced by a new personality — Tracy Strauss.

What do we know about Tracy Strauss? Rumors indicate that she has no awareness of her previous life, or other identities, and has since become the mistress to the New York Governor (played by Bruce Boxleitner).

We also know that Tracy Strauss won’t just be a sexy toy to the NY Gov, she’ll also be something of a political confidant. Or maybe just a very good manipulator, because future storylines will include Tracy trying to get Nathan Petrelli a cushy Government job. We already know that Nathan and Tracy will be working very closely together in future episodes.

But Tracy won’t be the mastermind here — that role will belong to the supposedly departed Mister Linderman (Malcolm McDowell), who is scheduled to make his return in the Season 3 premiere. I suppose it was too much to hope that a man who can heal anything and anyone could be killed by a punch through the skull?

Speaking of Linderman’s healing powers, what exactly is Tracy Strauss doing to this rose…? I seem to recall in a previous Season 1 episode where Linderman demonstrates his power to Nathan Petrelli by performing something similar to a dying flower…

So what awaits Tracy Strauss? Will Ali Larter finally be brought back into the Heroes fold and made important again? We’ll have to wait and see.

Then this.....

Emma in Cedar Rapids, Iowa: Can you tell me anything more about Ali
Larter’s character’s powers on Heroes?

You know the
reporter played by William Katt of
Greatest American Hero who confronts
“Tracy Strauss” (Ali Larter) with evidence
that she’s actually “Niki
Saunders”? Well, there’s a reason he’s only in one
episode, and that reason
is that someone kills him by accident. (Wait a minute,
could Ali be playing
a character with a lethal power? Noooo!) Also, after Tracy
begins to believe
the reporter might be right about her real identity, she sets
off to find
the doctor who delivered her, in hopes that he can tell her more
about her
origins. She finds out at summer camp she has an identical twin, and
they
set off on a mischievious but adorable mission to get their parents to
reunite. Or wait, that last sentence may have been from another story.

Okay, now I’m really confused. This bit of spoiler would seem to indicate that Tracy Strauss is NOT simply another personality of Niki Sanders, as previously believed, but is instead Jessica Sanders, Niki’s long-thought dead sibling, now going by the name Tracy Strauss. Which would not really make sense. If Jessica is in fact alive, and has always been all this time, then where has she been keeping herself, and why does her sister and family believe she died as a young girl? Also, if Jessica has always been alive all this time, why did Niki create an alter ego named Jessica to defend herself in times of stress?

From a purely storytelling perspective, it makes sense to give Ali Larter more to do in Season 3, and certainly having her “kill” off her Niki personality and replacing it with “Tracy” would provide plenty of drama, as well as the mystery that has been sorely lacking in the Niki department. I guess we’ll find out soon enough.

http://heroesthseries.com/

Then THIS from spoilerfix.com...and Ali herself:

According to Ali Larter, there is "something of a scientific basis" for the explanation of how Niki (who was killed in a fire in the season-two finale) and Tracy Strauss (her current character) appear to be identical.

Remember when the Oprah-esque head doc said that Niki had a "classic" case of MPD? Rule #3 of anything dealing with sci-fi...when ever something is called "classic".......it ain't it.

So let me cut to the chase here: if you remember ANYTHING about s1, then adding the stuff in S3, then here is the question.....and keep it in mind as "Villians" procedes: What id Linderman is Niki/Jessica/Gina/Tracy's REAL dad???

Just a thought.

Hot Kristen Spoilers

Fresh spoilage from Kristen from E!:

Nathaniel in Washington, D.C.: What can you tell me about Heroes' future?

Let's see...Matt Parkman's (Greg Grunberg) future is drawn for him by an African bushman, and in the world's future, the sky is full of people who can fly. It'll be just like The Jetsons! Except, you know, no flying contraptions needed. This is a future I'm looking forward to 'cause the traffic on the 405 is killing me.

Emma in Cedar Rapids, Iowa: Can you tell me anything more about Ali Larter's character's powers on Heroes?
