Heroes Grows, Slater slows..while at ABC: Wham Bam, Thank you Sam

Christian Slater spy series averages a 3.0 in 18-49s

Oct 14, 2008

With “Heroes” showing its first week-to-week growth of the season, NBC’s new spy drama “My Own Worst Enemy” debuted to okay numbers last night, neither great nor terrible.

“Enemy” averaged a 3.0 adults 18-49 rating at 10 p.m., according to Nielsen overnights, holding 71 percent of lead-in “Heroes’” audience and finishing a solid second in the timeslot.

The Christian Slater show received decidedly mixed reviews, with some critics calling it the best new show of the season and others dismissing it as a jumbled mess. But NBC noted that the show tied for the best retention for any show behind “Heroes” since “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip” two years ago.

At 9 p.m., “Heroes” rebounded a bit from the previous week’s series low, meanwhile, averaging a 4.2 rating, up 5 percent.

In other premieres last night, ABC’s “Samantha Who?” returned at 9:30 p.m. with a 3.1 rating, finishing well behind last year’s premiere but trailing fellow comedy “Worst Week” on CBS in the timeslot by just 0.2 despite having a smaller lead-in.

As a reminder, all ratings are based on live-plus-same-day DVR playback. Seven-day DVR data won’t be available for several weeks. Twenty-eight percent of Nielsen households have DVRs.

CBS was first for the night among 18-49s with a 4.0 average overnight rating and a 10 share. ABC and NBC tied for second at 3.2/8, with Fox fourth at 2.4/6, CW fifth at 1.7/4 and Univision sixth at 1.6/4.

As a reminder, ratings for Fox’s National League Championship Series are approximate as fast nationals measure timeslot and not actual program data.

At 8 p.m. ABC led with a 3.9 for “Dancing with the Stars,” followed by CBS with a 3.7 for “The Big Bang Theory” (3.6) and “How I Met Your Mother” (3.8). Fox was third with a 2.4 for its first hour of National League Championship Series coverage, NBC fourth with a 2.3 for “Chuck,” Univision fifth with a 1.7 for “Cuidado con el Angel” and CW sixth with a 1.6 for “Gossip Girl.”

CBS took the lead at 9 p.m. with a 4.3 for “Two and a Half Men” (5.3) and “Week” (3.3), with NBC second with a 4.2 for “Heroes.” ABC was third with a 3.6 for the last half hour of “Stars” (4.2) and “Samantha” (3.1), Fox fourth with a 2.3 for baseball, Univision fifth with a 1.9 for “Fuego en la Sangre” and CW sixth with a 1.7 for “One Tree Hill.” The latter did have a nearly two-year best among women 18-34, averaging a 3.9.

At 10 p.m. CBS led again with a 3.9 in 18-49s for “CSI: Miami,” while NBC remained second with a 3.0 for “Enemy.” Fox was third with a 2.4 for baseball, ABC fourth with a 2.1 for “Boston Legal” and Univision fifth with a 1.3 for “Cristina.”

ABC was first for the night among households with a 9.0 average overnight rating and a 14 share. CBS was second at 7.3/11, Fox third at 4.7/7, NBC fourth at 4.5/7, CW fifth at 2.3/3 and Univision sixth at 2.0/3.
